hi all
:(would so love to get aquainted with you guys and gals in the chatroom but anytime I wander in no body else seems to be there, are you all invisible, is it just bad luck, wrong settings bad timing....... ????
are there any other rootschatters with the same problem.

I have been lucky enough to have found someone in the chatroom every time I have entered, and yes, it may well be bad timing. Are you overseas? I have always found luck during 7 - 9 pm GMT ;)

you and I had a chat just after the chat room opened. I used to pop in at around 6.30 am Oz time and always had plenty of company.
Now I have the same problem as you - over the last couple of weeks there has been nobody home when I called :(
I'm glad you have the same problem - I was beginning to think it was just me they were hiding from :'(

Hello Scatty,
I try to "bob" in most uk evenings from 8-10pm and my favourite night is Friday as I can be in untill 12pm.
We have had a bank holiday over here and we have been away so not been in this last couple of days or so.
If the room is empty, why not invite another member by instant message, that is what I do when I fancy a chat and often people join you as you are chatting :D

If you want a chat in the chatroom
Send the person you want to chat to a personal message saying
"I am off to the chat room, care to join me"
Then you know there will be someone in there who YOU Want to talk too

I usually visit the chat room at 6-7pm California time. (2-3am Uk time) I'm happy to do look ups (1871, 1891, 1901) for all the night owls and people like me who are halfway around the world.

It would be a great idea to have a particular time for people to go to the RootsChatterBox.
Perhaps we should make it 5pm, 8pm and 11pm local time or something?

Just a thought ,is there any way that there could be some sort of visual indicator on the site so that we could know if there is someone in the chatroom?

I think both ideas are great. I often wondered why I never saw anyone in the chatterbox when I did visit, so I stopped.

does anyone use the 'chat page' if so how does it all work? have logged in there a couple of times but always seem to be the only one there, talking to myself! like being at home really!!!!!

I've tried several times to go in by clicking the icon at the top of the page (is this right?) and every time I get:
Loading settings 0%
..................and I wait, and I wait, and I wait................
then I go somewhere else!

Hi Jill,
Make sure your Shockwave Flash is uptodate. I also did a windows update too.

Right click on the chat icon on the home page and then click on 'open link in new window' and make sure your speakers are switched on. Then you can carry on doing what you're doing until some one else enters when you will hear a tone. You can then join in the chat!

Thanks for that but.........................(and I always knew I was thick).......................
a) I got email saying you had replied to me, but when I tried to see your replies from the email link I got a message saying 'access is denied to me'.
b) I found your messages through the normal route!
c) What is 'Shockwave Flash' and how do I update it?
d) Windows updates are done automatically on my pc.
e) I followed your instructions Ticker and got exactly the same as before, i.e. Loading settings, 0%.
f) Why should I assume anyone would want to chat with me anyway?

Jill. Are you still having trouble? How long have you left it when you get the message 'loading settings 0%' message? It can take a fair amount of time to load up the first time you go in. Are you on a broadband connection?

I haven't bothered at all until I got your message, then clicked on 'Chat' and Hey Presto! What a pretty green screen! Nobody in there though!
I don't have complete faith that this is going to happen every time, but when it did it was instant. No, I don't have broadband - not in my area yet. I have previously left it running for 3 or 4 mins. without result.
We shall see what happens now - I will let you know! Thanks for your help.

Jill. I was in there briefly, but it was deserted then! I'm going to post something to try and get some co-ordination of times etc. It's a great facility when it works OK and there's a few in there.

You can always open another window and carry on posting on the MBs becasue you'll hear anyone coming in to the "room"

A box comes up with would I like to instal Microsoft flash..
Is that meant to happen? When I click on no, the screen goes white, and the blue line at the bottom gets stuck half way across. As mentioned, this computer is not on Broadband like my own, will that make a difference?
Put the Kettle on Amy, keep it on the boil, I'll get there sometime.

Su. You will need to install Flash to use the chatroom. Should only take a few seconds to do even on a dial up connection.

What time do most of you try and get in the Chat Room? I have tried so many different times of each day and when I get in there I'm on my own :'( Doesn't anyone want to chat with me ??? :'( :'( LOL
Seriously - I would love to be able to have a good chat as long as I can find anyone there :)

When I click on the Chat button all I get a grey screen with the Quicktime logo in the middle.

How long is it staying like that for, before you give up?
Not sure what the problem is - have you tried deleting your temporary internet files (In Internet Explorer, TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, DELETE FILES, and tick box for DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT)

Have now managed to get it to work on Internet Explorer, which I find very slow, but it does'nt want to work on Netscape so it seem I will just have to use Explorer instead.

AS the "chat" facility appears to be based on shockwave you may need to download the plug in for Netscape seperately to the one for Internet explorer. I certainly had to as I am using Firefox as my main browser.

every time I go in the chat room I am alone, what am I doing wrong? When I go in at first the "CHAT" only loads to 34% then the green screene comes on. Matty

Matty. You're not doing anything wrong. We are trying to set some specific times during the week when members know to go in and that there will be others there. Try 8pm onwards on Friday. If there are any other times that you would like to suggest, please post them here so we can get a consensus of opinion. Thanks.
