Less than one fifth of rootschat members have put the names for which they are searching into the SIT. If everyone put all their names there we would have a much better chance of finding our cousins and exchanging information.
All you have to do is click on "your surname interests" at the foot of every page and then choose "edit surnames"

Is it the same fifth of rootschat members who are after reading this thread are voting in the survey?
-
I expect so. I've put most of mine up and I've voted.
I think the SIT is great and Bob's improvements have made it better. Perhaps the mods should impose a penalty on those who haven't put their's up :o :o :o
Only joking but it's an idea.

I regularly search SIT, in case I find a new contact.
Imagine my surprise when Googling one day, for more references for the One Name Study I am doing, to find a Rootschat reference to the name I was looking for; But it was not entered on SIT .
How much we must all be missing ::)

Not only am I a regular SIT searcher, but I update mine on a regular basis, I'm all for finding those elusive ancestors who just don't want to be found. :o :o

I don't know how but am off to take a look and add mine :)

I think the SIT is so useful, have had some contact from it. I have just a few more surnames to add to it and will do and I hope we can encourage others to do likewise!

I've put my names in too, but am wondering, from a Beginners point of view, whether the SIT is not advertised enough. Maybe Bob could put the link somewhere at the top of the page, rather than the bottom?
I have answered some Beginners queries advising them to put their names into the SIT and they didn't even know it was there!
What do you think Bob?!!

It flashes across the top of the forum page quite often Jan - as a large banner headline. Not sure what else can be done unless a plug for it could be sent to all new members or we could have it as part of the heading in every message. Something like that. I think it's useful. I've had quite a few contacts through it.

I've never noticed it :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ ;D so maybe Beginners won't see it either.
I think it's great that Bob has devised and set up the SIT. I haven't made any contacts yet but I do live in hope :D ;)

I go and check it regularly and add new names and have some useful contacts through it. It's worth just visiting every now and then to check who has added names

I think the link for it should be up at the top with the "profile" "calendar" & "chat" buttons etc. It took me ages to find it, even after being directed to it! I haven't had any contacts yet, and on some of my names, I am the only listing!

Totally agree on the SIT having its own button and that for some of my names on SIT, I am the only one. :)

I do have my surnames up but tried to update the other night and nothing happened ...... probably me .... off to see if I can change them now

Yes i also vote for a sit to have it's own button, unless its changes, since the last time i went in there i had to press three buttons. Some Members don't realize Rootschat is a BIG BOOK with lots of pages and chapters. So haven't finished the book yet ;D ;D ;D

I am another one that never noticed this, still havent

No, I've never noticed this either! I'm never looking at the top of the page - always reading the posts! ;)

What about a reminder on the registration page? Would that work? Or as part of the registration they could put in their four most searched for names and then a reminder on their first email to fill out the rest
I am always adding to mine but mainly the names of those who are linked directly. Might start adding siblings spouses names and see what happens

I have! But no-one else is looking into my names. :'(

I also have a few where I am the only searcher and these are in areas where the name is quite common and I still haven't found anyone looking for them

I concur, a button at the top alongside the chat and calendar buttons would be more visible.
Perhaps Surname Interests Table is too big to fit on a button - and perhaps SIT is too obscure?
cheers,

I think you wil find it is a technical problem and because the SIT is a seperate database it has to be linked in a different way to the buttons at the top of the display.

I have about 55 but there's about 50 or 60 more surnames to put on it yet.
