Title: Marriage Record Ontario "Hobbins and Armstrong"
Post by: mich on Friday 19 May 06 15:58 BST (UK)
Looking for the marriage of Dennis (Dorseance) Hobbins and Annie Armstrong. Their first child was born in 1882. In the 1911 census it says Dennis's birthyear is 1861 but in the 1901 census it says his birth year is 1846! And it says their first child Nellie was born 1882 but in the 1911 census it says 1885! I know this is the right family it both census as it lists all the children. But the dates don't jive! The rest of the children's dates are off by 1 or 2 years too! They lived in Peterborough.......so maybe they got married there.....maybe around 1881...........Thanks....Mich

Hmm, seems Annie was a twin,

Martin Joseph
January 20, 1887
Same parents, Dennis & Annie Hobbins

Different birth dates on the registrations, but the father registered them the same day, March 12, 1887.

Hi Mich,

A sister for Dennis can be found on this site (daur of Dennis Hobbins and Ellen Lucknow, married in Peterborough 1884).  A few other references to Hobbins in Peterborough if you search for Hobbins in the marriage section.

Thank-you so much....this is him!! and his children! You've put a puzzle piece together for me! Now I know that Dennis had a sister named Ellen! (From information that I had....but I did not know who Dennis parents were! This was the clue I needed! Now to find out where in Ireland they were from!!!......Thanks again  Other children they had were: Nellie, Kate (Katherine), Mary Lorraine (Millie),Charles, Loretta,Leta, Dennis, Carmal.
I have a Martin and also a Joesph Patrick and Annie. So their must be a  Martin Joseph and a Joseph Patrick! If you find their birth records that would be great too!!...........Again thanks for your help..................Mich

Hi Mich,

Glad we could help.  Have you found them in the census yet?

Widowed mother Ellen is with Ellen and Dennis in 1881.

www.familysearch.org

The 1901 and 1911 are also on-line

http://automatedgenealogy.com

This transcription has links to the original images, which should give you a year of arrival in Canada for mother Ellen if she is still alive.

The 1851 census is also on-line, but is not indexed by name so you really have to know what area you are looking in to find them on that one. According to the 1881, daughter Ellen was born in Canada in 1858, so it's possible the parents were here in 1851, but I would want some more info before randomly searching the Peterborough area.

Hi Mich, not sure if this is any help or more confusion but found a birth for

Denis Kane
Date of Birth:  February 27, 1884
Father:  Patrick Kane
Mother:  Annie Hobbins
Occupation of Father:  Labourer
Peterborough, Ontario

Also found a death registration for Patrick Kane and the information was his son-in-law a Mr. Heffernan in Peterborough.  The Heffernan's came to Peterborough from Ireland with the Peter Robinson settlers.  Perhaps the Hobbins were amongst the Robinson settlers as well?

No Hobbins on the list of Peter Robinson Settlers  :(

http://www.pcma.ca/robinson.htm

It seems Ellen was a widow for quite some time.  There is a Heads of Household Index for the 1871 census here and she appears as Helen Hobbins, in Ashburnham Village (same as in 1881).

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010803_e.html

I used to live in Peterborough.  Ashubrham village is the part on the East side of the Otonabee River, which runs through the middle of modern Peterborough.  Ashburnham used to be it's own "entity".

There are a few Catholic churches on both sides of the river which they could have attended.  I can't seem to find out much about catholic church records for that time period.  The cathedral for the diocese is in Peterborough and here is the Diocesean web site http://www.peterboroughdiocese.org/  Not much use though.

A lot of local records are held at the Trent University Archives (my alma mater - yay!) - but there was no mention of Hobbins in their genealogy collection.  But I just did a very quick search.  http://www.trentu.ca/library/archives/

Hope that helps somehow Mich!!
