Title: Pubs in Widnes 1871 - Is it still There?
Post by: Jan Ann on Sunday 21 May 06 17:04 BST (UK)
Hello ;)

One of my Rellies Jonathan Wade was a Stonemason and Publican in the 1871 census - living at The Crown Inn Appleton, or Appletow (cant quite make it out) Civil Parish: Widnes
Ecclesiastical parish: Farnworth St Luke, Ref RG10/3857 Folio: 112  Page: 8

Does anyone know if it still exists today - or have any photos?

Cheers

I don't know Widnes at all BUT using the net I would say it still exists.

I couldn't find a picture but did find address and phone number!

The Crown Inn Birchfield Rd, Widnes Cheshire, WA8 7TE 0151 424 3707.

Hi Rose

Thanks very much - very pretty picture - who is she? :-*

I have found Jonathan Wade in 1871 and he moved to Worcestershire where he was a liscensed victualler.  In 1881 he is a Widow and has moved back to the Widnes area - giving his profession as a publican again  this time there is no name for the Pub but the address is 7 Page Lane Widnes St Ambrose - anyone know the name of the Pub?

Cheers
Jan :D

The picture was my Dad's cousin.

Pubs on Page lane Widnes -

Commercial Hotel
3, Page Lane, Widnes, Cheshire WA8 0AE
Tel: 0151 423 4463

So he lived next door but one!

Seems unlikely to be two pubs next door but one?

Just googled a bit more..........

looks like Page Lane is quite industrial now - certainly a big unit at number 2. So the pub may now be gone.

You need someone with local knowledge - sorry I just googled!

Good luck

The Crown Public house is still trading but it has had some major alterations both inside and outside

The Commercial Hotel  in Page Lane has now closed down and is all boarded up. That was the only pub in Page Lane.

Both these pubs can be viewed on the google street map

Hi
The Crown Inn is still standing, however it has been altered.
If you google Birchfield Road,Widnes you will get a street view.

Regarding an old photo you might strike lucky on google images.

Hope this helps

The man and women in the door way was Samuel Thompson and his wife Jane Ann Thompson (nee Penney) who are my 2x Gt Grandparents and  took over from Mr Wade as publican in 1901. The girl to the left of Samuel is Jane Nevitt.
Hope that helps anyone :D

Dear Widnes Pub people!

A complete long shotbut here gies. Does anybody have information on the Peck family that lived in Widnes (at least in 1891)?  They moved to Penketh, Warrington and many years later my Mum & Dad ran an off licence in Warrington for 30 years
