Fed up with being "Jo Schmo" and want to change your name to "Daffodil" (or something) ??
No problems, you just go to your profile information and change it there ....
BUT
If you have already entered your names in the Surname Interests Table (SIT) as "Jo Schmo",
then please send me a PM and tell me your new name.
When you join RootsChat you receive a user-ID (hover the mouse-cursor over your name and you will see a line in the bottom of your browser with your ID-number).
The SIT "knows" you as a combination of your RootsChat profile-name and your User-ID.
If you change your profile name, then the next time you try to edit your names you will get error messages, saying that this ID is alread in use (by someone called "Jo Schmo"), or similar, so "Daffodil" can't access the SIT :(
i.e.: Either the chatter-name or chatter_id is wrong
or : Either the member-name or member_id is wrong
It's easy enough to change your SIT-name to "Daffodil" too,
as long as you send me a PM to tell me !!
This is not done automatically, through your profile change :(

you only need to let me know if you have been entering names in the Surname Interest Table
(see link link at bottom of the page [Your Surname Interests] (http://surname.rootschat.com/) )
I don't see you there . . . yet !!
but if you start entering your names now,
they will automatically use your new RootsChat name: creepy

I have not managed to change mine after several attempts-doing something wrong !
Do you have to change the password as well as your user name ?

You can only change your name in your profile:

but please remember to click on the "change profile" button afterwards.
You need to enter your password, to change your name, but you don't need to change your password.

you can do this by clicking to your "Profile" and then on Membership related settings.

Sorry, I don't understand. I think I have done everything as set out. I tried last March too but when I hit 'change profile' it just comes back to a blank form again and doesn't accept the changes. I must be doing something wrong but I don't know what !!

Hi Susan/Freddy,
Unfortunately the input procedure is not very clear on this point, but if you try to choose a name that has already been used, then the form will "come back" and the only information available will be a red asterisk at the username field.
There is already a member called "Susan" so I suspect that this is the problem.

Can you help me, Berlin-Bob? -- My User Name, was Patspast. I changed it in my account to "PeJaye" to use on the Chat site. -- because of too many "Pat's" on the chat site.
When I went on to the Chat site, "Patspast" is still on there. Help me please, to change it? ---- thanks ---- Pat

Hi Pat,
Just to help until Bob comes online - although you've changed the name we can see you as on RootsChat to 'PeJaye' - your username is still 'Patspast' and this is the name they can still see in the Chatroom.

The name in the the top left is still as it was. Hope that makes sense, finger's crossed ! :)

This is your user name. You can change your Name (or profile name, if that is clearer) but as Pels says, your user name will still appear on PMs and in the chatroom.

Hi Bob: I entered my full name under username and would of course like to change that, but I can't see where. I have printed out your instructions and I see the line under my username when I hover the mouse cursor over it, but I don't see a line in the bottom of my browser with my ID number. I thought if I went to my profile I could do it there but no luck there. I would like to change it to Familyfirst, can you help me.
P.S. I have already posted under my real name on a Photo restoration request and the forum came back with 7 corrections. Very, very helpful, but now what happens to the corrected pictures if I change my username? Thank you. Marianne

Hi Marianne,
Sorry, but 'familyfirst' is already registered (since 2012 ), so you can't use that name.
Try another name :)
