Title: Where is Annowalu?
Post by: Ceci on Thursday 21 October 04 15:42 BST (UK)
'Annowalu' appears on a Polish passport as the place of birth of a Jewish lady in 1901. I am led to believe that it might be in the Ukraine, but I have not been able to find it. Can anyone help?

Hi Ceci,

how certain are you of the spelling ?

I tried this site: http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm

for Annowalu, which came up with names like Annopol, Annapole (Latvia, Poland) and Annopol' , Annppol'yu (Ukraine).

Maybe posting the name might help.

A location in Poland/Russia/Ukrain for a jewish person suggest Galicia, parts of which are now in Poland and the Ukraine.
So, try these sitee too:
http://www.jewishgen.org/Galicia/index.html  and
http://www.halgal.com/index.htm

Good luck !

ANNOWALU was clearly written in large capital letters, but I have assumed it used the alphabet I am familiar with!

Thank you for trying to find it and for the websites to try. I will follow them up.

Do you have any more info. at all ?

I tried this site:  http://gnpswww.nima.mil/geonames/GNS/index.jsp   with "annowalu" and got nothing,
I tried again  'beginning with "annow" ' and got

Annowo    54° 11' 00" N 023° 07' 00" E PL61
Annowo    52° 49' 00" N 017° 52' 00" E PL26
Annowka   51° 59' 00" N 018° 14' 00" E PL34
Annówka   51° 40' 00" N 022° 28' 00" E PL45
Annów       51° 39' 00" N 020° 11' 00" E PL51
Annów       50° 56' 00" N 022° 30' 00" E PL45

all in Poland !

I tried http://www.jewishgen.org/ and got Annopol in Poland and the Ukraine,
I strongly suspect they both refer to the same place !

I have a polish colleague   here, but he's not in yet. I'll ask him later.

My colleague is here now, so I asked him. He found the place name "Annowal" in a polish database.

It's in Kostopol, a district which was in Galicia (then Poland) and is now in the Ukraine !!

I then googled "annowal" and got this site: http://www.galiziengermandescendants.org/BDC_Files/gp.htm

the main site: http://www.galiziengermandescendants.org/  looks interesting, too !

don't know if that helps any further, but it at least Annowal is looking good !

ps.
Just a thought, maybe "Annowalu" should have been written in the passport as "ANNOWAL  U" or ANNOWAL/U", with 'U' for Ukraine ??

Could you scan it so we can see?

It might be that there is a declension at the end. As you might know, rather than saying "at London" or "from London", Polish grammar expresses the same concept in one word as "London-at" and "London-from" (but obviously without the hyphens).

I assume it's definitely not in the Cyrillic alphabet?

Hello Berlin Bob,

Thank you for all your help - and your friend's - it's looking good. I am trying to find this out for a friend and have now got an image of the place in question. Actually 'Annowalu' is where she was domiciled, but her place of birth is also causing a problem. I am trying to post an image of both places but am not sure how to go about it. I only started using this website yesterday! Will keep trying. For now, the second 'a' in Annowalu appears as lower case so is perhaps an 'o' and the 'u' could be a 'v'. Her place of birth is more difficult to read but looks like 'Male Siedlierere'

Hi Ceci,

I have downloaded the images and enlarged them.

the 1st. one looks like ANNOWaL.U:  i.e Ukraine

the 2nd. one looks like Male-Siedlierer or Siedlinere . I'm wondering if it's a form of Siedlung (german for settlement, colony, estate).
I am not sure of the squiggle over the L, it could be a polish letter, and my colleague isn't at his desk at the moment.

I'll let you know if I can find out more.

Does the lady have a name ?  On the Galicia site, there are a lot of names, maybe you/we can find her there !

I have just spoken to my friend and Kostopol ties in nicely, so your help with Annowal is very much appreciated. The lady's name was variously spelt Dina (Dyne on passport) Kaplun (Kauplun) nee Mel. Her husband's name was Joseph (Jusef). She emigrated to Canada accompanied by her 2 children (see image) in July 1939.

Now I am going to look again at the websites you have recommended. Once again, many many thanks for your help.

Glad I could help.

I've found this place in the Ukraine:  Sieliszcze MaŻe  (the 'Ż' is a polish letter, looks like an L with a small line through it, pronounced 'w' !)

Variations of Siedliska are given as Sieliska so your name, Male-Siedliescie could maybe be a polish variation of the ukrainian place name.

I found this website and it came up with Siedliszcze Male, Wielke in Kostopol.

It looks like we have found the place between us!

FYI Polish "male" just means "little", "wielka" means "great" (as in Great Britain).

As I'm sure you know, the names look Jewish.

hi

Look for Annowal on an old map

Year of birth  1901

Place of birth  Male Siedliszcze   [ little settlement]

marital status     Married

The "L" is crossed similar to 't'

hi,

I think the place you want is halfway between Lubin, Poland and Kiev, Ukraine.  It's somewhere in the region of  Kostopol or Kostopil and  Rivno or Rivne. It is in Ukraine in the north west from what I can make out. I didn't actually find Annowal on the map.

Hi

Thank you for narrowing down the search. I have looked at maps on several websites, but still haven't been able to find the exact location of Annowal or Male Siedliszcze. The most detailed map I found was at http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/x-ussr/M35W.html but it was in cyrillic! There seem to be lots of places called Siedliszcze. Is this a generic term or are these actual place names?

Hi Ceci.

Try this. Type this in your search box.

                     siedliszcze gimna page

You should come up with a Polish web-site in English. Scroll down the page and you will find a genealogy link for the area.

There are three places called Siedliszcze and they are all east of Lublin.

I will carry on looking to answer the rest of this problem.

Hello,

  Town or village           District               County

  Anowal                       Kostopol             Kostopol

 [ note the spelling ]

On an English map of modern Ukraine look for
  KOSTOPIL  near  RIVNE.

I don't think that you will find Anowal / Annowal   without a detailed map as it is such a small village.

Don't give up as someone has the answer.

Annowal or Anowal or Annowola
http://wolyn.ovh.org/opisy/annowal-03.html

It was very small settlement, after the 2nd WW cease to exist , now on this place there is military airfield.

You can find it on detailed pre-war map,  east from Kostopol ( now Kostopil ), village Małe Siedliszcze is very close.
