Title: Armstrong/Beattie Canonbie Area
Post by: Jeffrey on Friday 26 May 06 16:46 BST (UK)
Hello All,

I now know that my family are associated with the  Armstrongs of Tarcoon (Torcoon Turcoon) Canonbie. (After much research I have now disproved this theory and know my Armstrongs are not connected to the Torcoon Armstrongs. :'( )

Here is the family:-

Robert Armstrong born about 1783
Agnes Armstrong nee Beattie born ???
Married Caononbie 1827

Their Family
William b 1827
John b 1828
Simon b 1832
Robert b 1833
Andre b 1838
Margaret b 1841
Agnes b 1846
All born Canonbie Dumfries.

I would be particularly interested if anyone is associated with the Armstrong or Beattie Family to get in touch as I have found no one else researching these. Thank you.
Judy

It is nearly 7 months since you posted the above and you may well have since moved on  :)  but I hope it helps.  I don't think you have it as you did not mention the earlier names.

The following is a transcription of a memorial in Canonbie:-
No.315
In memory of William Armstrong, son of William Armstrong in Blackrigg who died August 22nd 1791 in the 4th year of his age.  Also above William Armstrong who died May 21st 1814 aged 56 years.  Also Margaret Hogg spouse to above William Armstrong who died September 29th 1840 aged 81 years.  Also John Armstrong their son who died in Jamaica October 23rd <> aged 20 years.  Also Agnes Beattie the wife of Robert Armstrong who died at Torcoon 20th June 1845 aged 43 years.  Also above Robert Armstrong who died 25th June 1855 aged 73 years.

I too am deep in  the Armstrongs of Canonbie and it is a daunting task.  My Great grandfather Armstrong was married to an Armstrong as was his father, grandfather and ggrandfather.  I have been able to trace the males but am at a bit of a loss with the wives as they are called Margaret , Elizabeth and Isabella but then so are dozens of others.  I have come up against the Armstrongs of Torcoon but only at a distance so far. They are also tied in with another branch of my family the Elliots who also farmed in that area.
If you feel that I might be able to help do let me know as I am pretty familiar with the area and have many relatives who still farm around Torcoon.
I fear that the Armstrongs is a life time's job but there was an interesting and sad  happening this year when the last of the Armstrongs gave up farming in Dumfriesshire. An amazing decline in about 50 years.
My branch of the family died out about 25 years ago when the last male named Armstrong died. There are still several female descendants.
Regards
Alan

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your reply.

I have Armstrongs from Bewcastle too and you are right when you say it is a daunting job tracing them. Also found one in Liddesdale, Rox so that is 3 lots.

However back to Robert Armstrong. I now know that although my G Grandmother Agnes Jackson/Armstrong was born  illegitimate at Torcoon in 1855 that Robert Armstrong who lived at Torcoon was NOT the father as I had thought. In double checking I found he had emigrated to America before she was even conceived!!

So back to the Census's to the other likely Robert Armstrong's as Agnes's Father.
By the process of elimination I have come to the conclusion that it is a ROBERT ARMSTRONG born CANONBIE in or around 1831. His is in the 1841 Census at Barrascrofts Outhouse as 10 years old and an Ag Lab. In the 1851 Census he is at Perterburn as farm servant 20 years old and is missing from the 1861 Census. He was a servant at Orchard in 1854.

I can not find who his parents are at all or what happened to him.

There is a Robert Armstrong who is born 1832 in Canonbie but he is a Mason & that is the wrong one.

Any help or ideas on this would be gratefully received by anyone.

Judy

Hi Judy
I have no Robert Armstrong yet but, as I said in my last posting I have still to get down to the female Armstrong's in my family and who knows where that may take me as there is one in about every generation of all of the families in my Dumfriesshire trees.  They are married to Elliots of Archerbeck Canonbie and of Castleton, Rox; they are part of the Stodarts in Middlebie; the Romes of Holywood and Canonbie as well as their numerous intermarriages in Canonbie and Middlebie.
It would be great to tease out a few more of them but it will take time and the publication of more of the Census reports - Scotland's people is quite good but it is like a taxi meter on a very long run.
Will keep you posted as I find out more.

Hi Guys,

The Canonbie Armstrongs touched my family.  It's not overly helpful but a Mary ARMSTRONG married George CLAPPERTON who was the son of James Clapperton and Margaret TELFORD.

When I was searching for other graves I found another grave with CLAPPERTON and ARMSTRONG marriages.  One photo is below...

All the best,
Pam

Thank you both for the replies and the photos.

I have Elliots in my family tree too. From Castleton.
Jean or Jane Elliot born 1762 Sorbitees, Castleton her father was Adam Elliot.
Jean married  Simon Jackson of Castleton.

I agree about Scotlands People - I find it just too expensive.

If either of you come accross anything would be grateful

Agnes ARMSTRONG married William GRAHAM of Knottyholme about 1758 and had seven children in Thornethwaite, Knottyholme, and Canonbie.
Who are Agnes parents and where Agnes or her parents are from? I am also looking for a marriage.
Unfortunately, as William is a common name, I do not have Williams' birth or parents' names.
This is during the time of the Jacobites and Coventers.
I am having a hard time tracing my tree and maybe this is why?
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Razzy

Don't know anything about your Agnes - sorry.

Armstrong's are really difficult to sort out. If you don't get anywhere have you thought about joining the Armstrong Clan Association as they have  a vast amount of resourses and are very helpful and you may find other people reseaching the same family.

Agree with all the above posts, the Armstrongs are a complete nightmare to trace.

Same as you guys, I am tracing Armstrongs from Bewcastle and Cummertrees & Annan. Same names cropping up...Little, Scott, Henderson and Wilson

I spent a few years tracing German and Irish ancestors, but the Armstrongs are a nightmare.

I also agree that Scotlands People is far to expensive and informed them so when they emailed a survey to me  ;D

Below is my present status....

William Dixon marries Margaret Mitchell b.Bewcastle in Bewcastle 9-3-1872

David Mitchell b: Bewcastle (Margarets father) marries Mary Armstrong in Bewcastle (no date)

Richard Armstrong (Mary's father) marries Catherine Wilson in Bewcastle 20-6-1824

James Armstrong b. Bewcastle (Richards father) marries Janet Scott 4-4-1789

William Armstrong b; Cummertrees (James' father) marries Mary Henderson

James Armstrong (William's father) born in 1688 marries Catherin(e) Carli(s)le, he then marries an Agnes Haughan (born in Annan 10-9-1728)...I can't believe that age gap, has anyone else come across this before??

A James Mitchell married a Margaret Little in Bewcastle 15-3-1819.

I may take Jeffrey's advice and join the Armstrong Clan Association.

Apologies for jumping in on the post

By the way, the following link is a great link for Armstrongs in Bewcastle..

Don't know if this is of any help from Bewcastle records
1863 Apr 13:   DAVID MITCHELL(X),37,Pitman, of Clatteringford,s/o James Mitchell,Pitman
MARY MITCHELL, 34, of Clatteringford, d/o Richard Armstrong, Shoemaker
(Reputed Husband and Wife by a Gretna Marriage 16 years ago)
   Ws: William Mitchell(X). Jane Mitchell(X)

Definitely worth joining the Armstrong Clan Assoc lots of really good researchers there and lots of information too.

Smashing Judy, very much appreciated, they are the side of the Family I'm tracing, as they are recorded as coal miners on the census's.
Thanks also as I was unaware that Richard Armstrong (whom I think may have died young 1839) and Catherine (?) (d. 1876)? had married in Gretna.

Excuse my ignorance, but where are you finding the "Bewcastle Records"

So if I understand Johnbhouys research, there is William, James, then Richard
William is the oldest, then James, lastly Richard/ grandfather, frather, son.
James is born in 1688 in Bewcastle and married three times.
1st to Janet SCOTT in 1789
2nd to Catherine CARLISLE
3rd to Agnes HAUGHAN who was born in 1728.
Richards' mother would be whom?
The math does not fit but Agnes caught my eye.
Still looking for marriage of William GRAHAM and Agnes ARMSTRONG by 1758 having children christened in Canonbie.

Razzy, this is how I understand it so far...

William Armstrong b 16..?

James Armstrong b. 1688 d. 4/11/1783 married Catherine Carlisle b. Oct 1706 Annandale d.?
Also married (18/06/1745) in Bewcastle to Agnes Houghan b.10/09/1726 Annan d. 21/08/1811

William Armstrong b. 1739 Annandale d. 12/10/1821 Bewcastle, married to Mary Henderson b.1747 d. 17/07/1774 Bewcastle

James Armstrong b.1767 Bewcastle d. 11/07/1847 married (09/04/1789) to Janet Scott b.1770 d. 17/08/1807

Richard Armstrong b.18/02/1800 d. 03/03/1839 married (20/06/1824) to Catherine Wilson b.1803 d. 21/10/1876

Hope this makes some sense

Hello Armstrong People!!

Researching on behalf of step mum - wondering if anyone has come across these two Armstrong brothers before 1911...

In 1911 William Thompson Armstrong and Thomas Armstrong are living in Brinsworth, Yorkshire, England with two sisters, Janet and Marion nee Nichol, with five children between them. Both brothers say they were born in Stockton in Durham. William dies in 1917, and Thomas in 1932, both in Brinsworth, Yorkshire, England. William’s birth year according to the 1911 would be about 1866, but according to the burial record would be about 1859, Thomas’s birth year according to the 1911 would be about 1869, but according to the burial record would be about 1863.

Thomas is my step mother’s grandfather – would really like to be able to find out who Thomas’s parents are for her if I can. The story is further complicated in that we cannot find a marriage for either of the brothers to either of the sisters - possible there are no marriages to be found - Janet was previously married to a Thomas Fletcher - and the parentage of some of the children would appear to be not as described in 1911 – but these are side issues really – it’s the parentage of the two Armstrong brothers that is the main challenge.

Thanks to anyone who has suggestions that might take us in the right direction!! Step mum’s ancestry dna results are in, and there are several Armstrong lines that suggest that the two chaps who say they were born in Durham are from a family that has roots in Canonbie – but there are so many Armstrongs in Canonbie that “bridging the gap” not looking an easy task!!

Try joining the Armstrong Clan Association as they have thousands of verified records and pedigrees available. It's about £10 per year. See:
