Title: info: Elba Colliery explosion 1905
Post by: Welsh Jen on Thursday 21 October 04 21:43 BST (UK)
21st January 1905 an explosion at the Elba Colliery, Gowerton, killed 11 men and boys.

There are proposals for a centenary commemoration. A project by the local primary school is on the BBC web site at http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/southwest/tours/events/pages/tregwyr.shtml

In tonight's 'Swansea South Wales Evening Post' there is a request that anyone with family members involved in the disaster contact the clerk of the local town council Bill ARNOLD on 01792 653523 or 01792 533541.

Anyone with any documents relating to the 24 mines that operated in Gowerton at various times is invited to contact Mr CASEY at Tregwyr Junior School.

The whole coalfield has a history of disasters as well as profitable working leading to the building of comfortable communities.
