not sure if i spelt it right. i have just found out my father was head boy there he sadly passed away 4 weeks ago his name was sydney weare would there still be any records from the school
-
Many of the old Newport schools' records are kept at the Gwent Records Office, County Hall, Croesyceilliog.
I'm not sure if they have Hatherleigh's records but it's worth a try.

Just reading through and came across this query, cant answer the question but i did attend the school - Its Hatherleigh - it was a lovely old manor house with all the original fireplaces etc. I remember the beautiful wooden staircase. It has now been demolised for a number of years and houses built in its place. The name was taken from Hatherleigh in Somerset - on a good day you could see Hatherleigh from the school. There is quite a history to the school but i cant remember it now.

Hi Mazzy
When did you attend Hatherleigh both my parents and there siblings went to the school.
Regards Lynne

Not that this information is of any use to you but my cousin also went there before the war and then went onto St Julian's High School.
He eventually joined the RAF and became a Lancaster bomber pilot and was killed along with his crew in August 1943.

In the latter years of Hatherleigh school it became private where a friend of mine sent his children too.

Hi Lynne
I was at Hatherleigh when it was a secondary modern school i went there in 1958 and left in 1962 or 1963 (cant remember) think it was 62, it was when they allowed you to leave at Christmas if you had reached the age of fifteen by then. I left to go hairdressing as i had been working after school and on the weekend at Stefans on Chepstow Road. Mentioned this to my mother in law and she attended Hatherleigh also when it was a high school. I still live in Newport although for the past twenty years i have worked in Cardiff. I live in Caerleon.

Hi all, I went there in abt 1967 for about 8 months before moving to Poole, Dorset. It was then called St Julians Junior High school and acted as a middle school before St Julians High. im sure ive seen a photo of it on the web somewhere but cant remember where, Phil.

What was Hatherleigh before the School ?
-
I have just come on this site and although this is an old post I could not resist answering your question!
I am an old Hatherleigh girl I left in 1955.This lovely old house was built in the 1850`s by Henry Pearce Bolt.It was named after his birthplace in Devon. After his death in 1884 the house was sold to a Mr Sulcliff Ogden who sold it again by auction.
Hatherleigh House remained in private ocupation by Mr William Anning J.P. and in 1926 became Hatherleigh Central School and its headmaster was Man of Gwent Fred Hando.
The school was closed in 1985,it is now demolished and an estate of houses now stand on the site . Appropiately the estate is called Hatherleigh.
-
its a real shame this beautiful house was demolished, i remember it as a child
it should of had a listed building status put on it definately a one off i would love to see some pictures of it i only have the ones in my head !!
-
Unfortunatly the low life was stealing the lead off the roof and damage was
done to the house with rain getting in etc.
Yes, it should have been better protected not just left to decay. I always
thought it would have made a very good care home for the elderly. The
views from the terrace would have been lovely for them.

Hi,
I am interested in knowing some more about h.p bolt if you know anything Hatherleigh.
He is my Great great grandfather.
I was born in Bristol and began to play rugby in newport, then i found out and am searching for more information. i know live in newport in the very same district he was councillor. Very strange!!

Hello Anna, how lovely to have Henry Pearce Bolt as a gt.gt. grandfather!
All I know about him is, he not only built Hatherleigh in the 1850`s but he also built some of Newport`s finest buildings.
The Lyceum Theatre and the Queens hotel were built by him in the 1860`s as well.
I expect you know this lovely school was built as a house for him and named after his birthplace in Devon. After his death in 1884 aged 66yrs old it was sold to a Mr Sutcliff Ogden.
Henry Bolt is buried in St Woolos Cemetery.
Regards
Gwyn

Hi Anna,
took me a while to log back in on here to answer you, sorry, the cemetery you need to look in is St Woolos Cemetery, not St Woolos Cathedral Cemetery, as you go in the main gates just pas the little roundabout, take a right, and it is the large monument in the middle of three yew trees I think they are. Are you from Newport, if so, we could meet up and have a chat if you liked, share info??
Helen
-
Wow thank you. i will pop there.
yes i do live in newport, near maindee. i found out through ancestry.com that he is in fact my 3rd great grand uncle.
-
Perhaps you know this already but there is a row of terraced houses on Chepstow Road called "Bolts Row". I believe these were built to house people who worked at Hatherleigh.
Bolt Street in Pill was certainly named after Henry Bolt.
-
Thnk you denben.
yes i did already know this. But thank you for your help also :)

I only recently came across this topic, I attended Hatherleigh Central School from 1936-1939,at that time Mr. Fred Hando (Nobby) was the Head Master. Mr. Vince Griffiths was Deputy Head, well Known in Welsh Rugby Circles, he was also the science master, later became Head Master of Eveswell Boys School. Mr. Hill taught English, as did Miss Etty Williams, who also taught History, Mr. Gwylm Price taught woodwork & metal work, he was a member of the RAFVR and was killed early in the war in a flying accident. Mr. Williams (Snoz) taught Geometry and Maths, Miss Bevan Music, she had a liking for Light Operetta.
Ihave attached a Photograph of the School taken in the winter of 1927/8 with a box Browny camera, also the words that I remember of some of the school song "The Severn Fair"

HI all. I went to Hatherleigh as did my Mother before me,I left in1953. Mr Hando was headmaster to both of us. Far has I know it was he who wrote the school song.Have fond memories of the school but mostly I recall hurrying up Lawrance hill when running late.
-
I grew up at Hatherleigh, My father was the last caretaker.
I was 8 when it closed.I have very fond memories of playing in the grounds as a child.
I had birthday parties in the cantine, racing my go-cart from the top gate down the parking lot dwn the path by the football field and dangerously trying to stop before i went down the steps to the front door.
in the summer making sand castles in the long jump pit and playing with our dog on the lawn by the monkey tree..... and my father helping me make wooden ships out of the scrap in the woodwork room....
But as Gwyn said it was left to rot... and every thing of value from the lead , hard wood floors even the fire places were stolen...
It's a shame its gone. its the only place that I really called home... and good pictures are hard to find.
-
Just to let you all know there is now a Facebook page called Hatherleigh is best which is an open group. Lots of great photos and memories on there, Phil.

Hi there Raymond. My mother in law passed away 2 weeks ago, she was 93 and went to your school near enough the same time as you. Even when she was diagnosed with Dementia she still sang “As we climb the hill to Hatherleigh in the sweet fresh morning air. The birds sing around us merrily And the sun on the Severn shines fair” I am writing this into her Eulogy and the fact One of its famous students at that time was Johnny Morris , television presenter of Animal Magic, and also co-presenter of Tales of the Riverbank. Lilian Muriel Sadler was born in 1923,Corporation Rd and probably finished school when they moved to Nantgarw, Pontypridd in 1935/36 ish
