Title: BODE from Hanover to London 1870s
Post by: throckenholt on Thursday 22 June 06 13:25 BST (UK)
I am trying to track down where my ancestor Heinrick (Henry Enrest) Bode s of Lorenz Bode came from.  On other official documents he is just classed as German or from Hanovaria.

He was born in February 1861, and emigrated to London sometime before 1881, where he was found on the census, stating he came from Strelshausen, Hanover.

Does or did this place exist? if so where ? If not, does anyone have suggestions of what the real name might be?

I have been caught out before when a place called Nesen turned out to be Uelsen -
it is amazing how garbled names can become.

He was supposedly one of 4 brothers who came over and were waiters (not backed up by uk census returns so far) - although he was a waiter in a London hotel in later life (not in the 1881 census).

Any help appreciated.

Did he marry an Elizabeth Mary, incidentally?  I see a Henry aged 40 in 1901 with an Elizabeth, and there's a couple of WWI naturalizations labelled as 'readmissions' - these are for English women who had married foreign men and had to renaturalize.

HO 144/1442/302888
Nationality and Naturalisation: Bode, Elizabeth Mary, from Germany. Resident in Willesden. Certificate 1,725 issued 23 March 1916. Re-admission.

Perhaps if you could get a copy of the original census image as well it would be easier to work out what 'Strelshausen' might be.

Yes please, the image would be good.

I've been trying my german google, but all I have so far, is
HERRENHAUSEN and WALDHAUSEN, now parts of Hanover.

There is also a STRAHLSHAUSEN, but that is in Hesse, nowhere near Hannover
And a STRUCKHAUSEN, in the same state as Hanover, but not all that near.

The only other references to STRELSHAUSEN are your queries on Rootsweb.

Hi Annie,

Google = Strelshausen
==>  "Meinten Sie: strahlshausen "
    i.e "did you mean: strahlshausen"

Sterkelshausen is in Hesse, quite a long way from Hanover !

thanks everyone.  Yes he married Elizabeth Mary Nairn from Blisworth in Northants) , I have the naturalisation certificate (he had died by then, she got it during the first world war because her sons were in the army and the wanted to lose the stigma of being "German").

I will try and post an image - will let you know when I have.
