Title: Isaac FOOTE & Mary Ann HARDING
Post by: KSmith on Friday 23 June 06 08:44 BST (UK)
Hi All

Hoping someone may be able to help me find further information on this couple and/or their ancestors.  I believe they may have married in Gloucestershire.  Isaac FOOTE was born about 1828 in Gloucestershire and married Mary Ann HARDING who was, I believe, also born in Gloucestershire (Westbury on Trym) about 1829.  This couple migrated to Victoria, Australia where their first child in the  new colony, George FOOTE was born in 1857.

I believe that Isaac's parents were Charles FOOTE and Maria.

Mary Ann HARDING's parents were William HARDING and Margaret.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanking you.

Cheers
Katherine

I'm not having any luck with Isaac. Not many Foot/Footes in Gloucestershire, certainly not an Isaac. I can find a Charles married to a Mary in Somerset, but not with a son Isaac. I can find an Isaac in Somerset, but he's still there in 1861. I have a possibility for Mary Ann
1841 Durdham Downs, Bristol H0107/359/7 folio 9 pg 12
Mary A(?) Harding 5
in household of Henry Every

1851 5 Seymour Place, Bristol H0107/1952 folio 433 pg 17
Mary Ann Harding u 17 nursemaid b. Durdham Downs
in household of John Higgins Coomber

also 1841 6 Sims Row, Clifton H0107/377/1 folio 10 pg 14
William Harding 50 quarryman
Margaret 50
Daniel 20 labourer
Samuel 19 can't read occupation - looks like hattier
all born in county.
The area for this bit of the census is next to Durdham Downs and the enumerator's description implies Sims Row is in the quarry! I used to live just down the road from there and seem to remember there were remnants of the quarry - certainly lots of odd levels. No sign of William of Margaret in 1851, but Daniel and Samuel are both in Clifton and working at the quarry. This is the only Margaret old enough to be Mary Ann's mother.
Sorry I can't find anything more certain.

Hi Osprey

Thank you very much for looking so widely for me.  The Harding family you mentioned at Sims Row in 1841 are mine, as Mary Ann had brothers Samuel & Daniel that fit the ages pretty well.

It is great to hear from someone with local knowledge too!

It is very interesting that Isaac was a difficult one to find.  The lead that he was born in Gloucestershire came from his death certificate, which may possibly be wrong?

Thanks Osprey, I really appreciate your help.

Warm regards
Katherine

Hi,

I'm glad the family fit as I was starting to get a bit desperate on that one. Do you want me to post Daniel's and Samuel's entries from 1851? It would need to be tomorrow as I've been looking at a screen far too much today. Who gave the information on Isaac's death certificate? Any chance of mistakes? I'll have another look for him as well. Another thought, did they marry in the UK or in Australia? Finding a UK marriage certificate would give their residence at time of marriage.

success with Isaac!
1841 Gallunos(?), Trevithin, Monmouthshire HO107/744/7 folio 48 pg 40
Charles Foote 35 miner n
Maria Foote 35 n
Ellen 15 n
Isaac 13 n
Charles 10 n
Anne 5 y
Sarah 1 y
n = not born in county, y = born in county
Trevithin became Pontypool more or less

1851 75 Engine Road Row, Ebbw Vale Iron Works HO107/2448 folio
Isaac Foote lodger u 22 collier b. Dorset, Trinity
also his little sister is visiting
Sarah Foote visitor 11 b. Mon, Trevithin

can't see parents, but you'd think they'd be close by as surely Sarah wouldn't have travelled miles to see her brother. I'll go back and get reference - think excitement of finding him was too much for me.

the reference for Isaac in 1851 is HO107/2448 folio 753 pg 1. I wasn't having any success finding his parents in 1851 so I checked the bmds and found Charles' death in 1845 1Q Pontypool vol 26 pg 103.
Maria remarries the following year 3Q 1846 vol 26 pg 179 Pontypool with 4 possibilities for her spouse on that page. I was working through eliminating the choices and had settled on George Belsher as her man, when I realised she was actually staying with Isaac at the time of the census!
She is recorded as Mariah Belsha visitor 48 b. Dorset, Motcombe, but she's also with her husband
HO107/2449 folio 338 pg 36 Abersychan
George Belcher head mar 36 iron miner b. Gloucestershire
Maria wife 40 b. Dorset
Interesting difference in ages - wonder if she didn't tell her toy-boy the truth!

After that, I had a look at Motcombe on the Genuki site and saw that there is an online parish clerk who has a website with parish records. In the marriages, there is Charles Foot marrying Maria Brickell October 26th, 1825. No sign of baptisms for any of their children. Brickell seems a common name locally and there's a few possibilities for Maria's birth. Perhaps you could contact the OPC for more info on the marriage as her father's name might be on the original record.

The other son, Charles, gives Weston-super-Mare as his place of birth on the 1851 census HO107/2452 folio 453 pg 11. I haven't found Ellen yet on the 1851 to see where she was born - it might help with Isaac. He stated Trinity in 1851, but this isn't a parish as far as I can see.

Sarah's baptism is on the IGI - 29/3/1840 daughter of Charles and Mariah at Trevethin(correct spelling -   I can never remember and got it wrong all through previous post). Monmouthshire comes under England for the IGI.

Hi Osprey

I cannot find a reply from me to thank you for all your hard work, and fabulous help you offered on the FOOTE folk.  I am very much hoping that I did send you a personal reply earlier.  If you did not receive one for me, please accept my most sincere apologies, and gratitude at locating a whole new generation of family for me.

Yours humbly
Katherine

There were two children born i the UK Maria and James before emigrating to Geelong on the SHALIMAR.

Well done everyone on the current information.

Am also a descendent, through Maria.  Knew little about the family beyond my grandmother (Maria's granddaughter), and have just traced back to the early 1800s today.
Wasn't expecting to find this level of detail on the first day(!), thanks for posting.

There is on one Public Members Tree this information (which can be read on Ancestry, and gives details of Charles FOOT, which includes, height 5' 6 and a half inches -  and with very dark brown hair, grey eyes, rather sallow complexion) will try and read through.
