Title: 1901 Leftovers: Web site to close?
Post by: Pollynation on Tuesday 26 October 04 21:36 BST (UK)
I have just been to  http://4trudy.co.uk/census/  (for the 1901 census leftovers) and this is the message on the page:-

Unfortunately I am no longer able to maintain this site. If you, or someone you know has the time, interest and knowledge to take over, please get in touch at
Moderator Comment: Email Address Removed to avoid Spamming - use a Personal Message to contact this user The site has two free yahoo email addresses, a mailing list with over 300 members. There is also a domain name which you can take over free of charge. All I ask is that you keep the concept of the site, ie. that transcribers are linked to their own transcriptions enabling others to get in touch with them, other than that feel free to change anything you want to, to make this site your own.

Does anyone know if it has been "taken over"? What will happen to all this work if nobody does?

Pauline

Thankyou trystan.

I'm happy that rrotschat are trying to do it. It would have been such a shame to loose all this info.

Do we still send things in or wait till it's been sorted?

Thanks
Pauline

Yes delighted to say that RootsChat is taking on the 1901 leftovers site - we are still in the process of transfer - but we will keep you posted!

Trystan and Sarah (the RootsChat admins) commented "We are really
excited to have the opportunity to carry on this great work that Trudy and all of the contributors have done. It would have been such a great loss to have seen it go, and we hope that with all your help we can help the project keep on growing. Thank you Trudy!"

Trystan, do you have any news on the progress of the 1901 Leftovers site ?

I have just visited:
http://1901census.rootschat.com/
but many of the links don't work, and when I tried a surname search, the process just seemed to 'hang' forever...

Is it an abandoned project ?

Steve,

Indeed, many of the links no longer work on there, and the project is 'on hold', but not abandoned.

If you try a Person Search, say for John Jones, aged 5, age range 10 years it will give  a result, so it does still work.

We are looking to modify the way that it works so that:

1) People's email addresses are protected
2) Data can be entered more automatically

I'd not come across this site before.  Can someone explain what it was/will be about?

Basically, when you obtain a copy of a 1901 census page, there will be many people on that page of no interest to you or your research. These are the 'leftovers'.
For each of your ancestors 1901 census pages, you can submit all the people contained on the page to this database, and allow others free access to the data.

This is great  - I have lots of 'strays' to add, and then perhaps they won't be 'strays' but will find good homes!

 Thanks for taking this on!!

The site has been closed for ages. We "took it over" when Trudy closed it down.  It was running here for a while but there some problems when we moved to a new server, and due to pressures of work, we haven't been able to reopen it (yet).

Bob

 ;D

You may regret doing that Bob

On page . . . . . .
 http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jeffery.knaggs/PageIDs.html

the links don't work for . . . . .

Several people have developed software to make the above tasks a little simpler and more convenient.
One from Stephen Miller is available from www.leedsindexers.co.uk/
An easy to use conversion tool with no software to download is available from Steve James at www.steeljam.co.uk/1901census/1901.html.

No Problems.  I'm not accepting submissions at the moment
(too much other stuff to do  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,613454.0.html  )
but when I do, the submitters will supply the necessary numbers.

regards,
Bob
