Can anyone give me any advice about how to start researching my gt gt gt grandfather John Macdonald. He appears on the Warwickshire English census for 1851 labourer aged 52, born Sligo Ireland. He is not in the 1841 English census and I think he was still in Ireland then. Is there an 1841 Irish census, or any birth records for around 1799? His son (my gt gt grandfather was called James also born Ireland around 1820. Many thanks.

Hello Annmarg,
There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.
1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.
You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

annmarg- there was an 1841 census for Ireland (every 10 years like the rest of U.K.) but unfortunately almost all pre-1910 census records were destroyed except for small fragments for a few places (only ones for Co. Sligo are 1901 and 1911).
