Title: Llanfair Caereinion Calvinistic Methodist Minister John Grey JONES
Post by: ShaunJ on Thursday 13 July 06 11:36 BST (UK)
Looking for information on the ministry of John Grey Jones who was a Calvinistic Methodist minister in Llanfair Caereinion in the late 1870's/ early 1880's. Per the 1881 census he lived in the High Street at that time.

Hi Gardener,

It's certainly possible that your photograph is of "my" Reverend Jones - right place, right time - any chance that you could scan it and post it on RootsChat? Is he a relative of yours ?

It is likely that he is a relative however i have not identified where he fits in yet. you can view the photo at www.llgc.org.uk go to the John Thomas Collection and search for JTH01973. What is your connection with Revd Jones?

Thanks for that - I can't see a family resemblance though !

The family connection is on my wife's side. John Grey Jones married Anne Ellen Thomas in 1879. They had two children - Myfanwy Grey Jones and Idwal Lloyd Jones. Myfanwy is my wife's grandmother.

I think I've been able to identify some of the "Rev Jones" Llanfair Caereinion photographs in the John Thomas Collection:

JTH01973 and JTH01974: Reverend Jones of the Wesleyan Chapel (identified by "W" in the photographers notes)

JTH00113 and JTH00114: Reverend William Jones of the Calvinistic Methodist church (identified by "CM" and "MC" in the photographer's notes). This is John Grey Jones' predecessor

Thanks for your interest, Cennyd. You caused me to look again in the Welsh newspapers and I found this lengthy article in the Cambrian News of 11 October 1878:
