Title: BRIMECOMES of Portsea - late 1800's
Post by: SCH on Tuesday 18 July 06 22:40 BST (UK)
1891 Census : 3 Redward's Court, Portsea

Edward Brimecome (aged 33)
Ann Brimecome (aged 32)
Grace Brimecome (aged 17)
Annie Brimecome (aged 13)
Matilda Brimecome (aged 3)

**************************
I know that Grace Brimecome married Thomas Henry Jackson in 1892 (these are one set of my GG Grandparents).

Annie Brimecome 'I think' possibly married a John Page in Portsea in 1899.

According to FreeBMD - a Matilda Brimecome married either John Wallace or William Wiggins in Portsmouth in 1907.
**************************

Is anyone related to any of the names above ?

Or does anyone have any further information on the Brimecome's ? I think that they might well have come from Cornwall............although more a guess than anything else !!

I have located Edward Brimecome in the 1881 Census as being on HMS Inconstant.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
And possibly, Edward Brimecome's parents were called Edward (born approx 1816 Portsea) and Mary (born approx 1821 (Bideford, Dorset) (but Ancestry shows their surname as Brimscome (this could be a transcript error) - the dates and place names all appear to match.

The 1871 and 1881 Census has them living at 4 Wellington Place, Portsea.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any thoughts or details would be great.

Thank you.

I'm aware that on earlier census records, the name of Brimecome was listed as Brinecome and Brimescom.

So does this offer any thought to anyone ?

Thanks

A marriage on Free BMD, December quarter 1840, Portsea Island, includes an Edward Brimscome and a Mary Pouley. Would they be likely candidates?

Beth - yes they were the parents of Edward Brimecome (shown on the 1891 Census). I now have got the Marriage Cert.

Is anyone aware of any Brimecome's still around the Hampshire area or if the name carried on into the 1900's ?? I wonder if they might be able to trace back to these ones ?

It's such an 'odd' name.

Further to my earlier message - we'll we have exchanged details of shared ancestors and also I was sent a couple of copies of fabulous photos of a sister of my GG Grandmother taken in 1903 - I'm now in the process of gathering burial details that I will send to patriciap2.

If anyone else is linked to a Brimecome, I'd be delighted to hear from them.

Thank you.

I don't have a William Brimecome.

However, I do have the following Brimecome's- so maybe you can link them somehow to yours :-

Grace Brimecome born 1875
her sisters - Annie born approx 1879
Matilda born 1887

Their Father - Edward Brimecome born 1858
his sisters Matilda born 1855
Frances born 1852

And finally their father Edward Brimecome born approx 1816

All were born in Portsmouth (Portsea), apart from the final Edward (1816) - he was born in Devon/Cornwall - info from what I remember as info is all filed away at present !)

Hope the above helps in a small way.

Hi Kerry,

If you can go back a bit further with your Grandad, it might link into one of the mentioned Brimecome's in this thread.

Keep us posted.

Hello SCH,
Your Edward  1816 was son of Edward and Hannah Ridout married 1802.  Hannah died 1845.
Am hoping you have found more info after all these years  ;D  ;D
Anyway, my Thomas Brinecome was born about 1804. I think he may be another brother to your Edward?
Such a muddle with all those different spellings and even worse transcriptions!
