Title: William Hotson to Port Hope Canada
Post by: graylady on Tuesday 01 August 06 15:18 BST (UK)
William Hotson born 1820 in Canonbie Scotland came to Canada sometime between 1850 and 1855 , notsure.      He married Agnes Ashcroft in 1855 in Port Hope.
He mirgrated to the U. S. in 1875 . But would like to where he lived while in Canada.
Also have no information on Agnes Ashcroft. She was born in Scotland in 1840.Came to Canadain 1841, I think. Would like to find out the names of her parents. Some of the family members think her father's name was John. Any information would be greatly welcomed.

In the 1871 Census Head of HOusehold Index there is the following:

John Ashcroft
Age: 56
Place of Birth: Scotland

District: County of Grey South
Location: Township of Egremont
Ethnic Origin: Scottish
Religion: Church of Scotland, Kirk, Scotch Presbyterian
Occupation: Farmer

Microfilm Number: C-9950, Division 1, Page 46

You would have to look at the original census to see who else is there.

So, with Agnes daughter being born in Egremont Township, this looks like a good possiblity I think.

Hi graylady,

1855 is unfortunately a bit early to find a marriage record (civil reg started in 1869), although there are some records around for this period.  How do you know they married in Port Hope in 1855?

If that is true, then they moved around a bit while they were here.  Port Hope is in Hope Township, Durham Co. about 240 km / 150 mi from Egremont Township in Grey Co.

I don't see him on the heads-of-household index for the 1871 census (where Karen found John Ashcroft)
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010803_e.html

The 1851 census is also on-line, but has not been indexed.  http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/1851/index-e.html  Unfortunately, the Port Hope pages for this year have been lost.  The agricultural census still exists for the town, which gives the names of heads of households reporting agricultural activity - but I do not see the names Hotson or Ashcroft on this list.  The 1861 Port Hope census has been transcribed here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ongenpro/census/ , but I do not see them so they may have moved on to Grey Co. by then.    :(

Although I don't see him in this Directory of Grey county from 1865!  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wjmartin/greypref.htm

Argh, he is proving elusive!

Sorry I can't be of more help  :'(  Any more clues for us?  I see their 1880 census entry from Kansas - most of the children are born in Canada but all before civil registration...

I found a William Hutson on the 1871 who was born 1820 ( not in Port Hope)...but looking at the 1880 U.S. ...he says he was born 1830? J.J.

( These people seem to have an actual marriage date although not a place in Canada?)

Ok, here is the information from the 1871 Ontario Census for John Ashcroft

John Ashcroft, age 56, born Scotland, Church of Scotland, Occupation Farmer
Margaret Ashscroft, age 50, born Scotland, wife

I was hoping more people would be living with John and his wife, at least you have the name of Agnes mother now.

The family names about and below the Ashcrofts are

Muir
McLachlan
McPhee

All these families were born in Scotland and farmers as well.

Hello Greylady

Not much luck on finding William and Agnes in Canada but if you try the following website
www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb click onto cemeteries  and go to the Oklahoma Cemetery Transcription Project you will find the Hotson family  in Haywood Cemetery, Garfield County.
You may already have this information . I'll keep a further lookout.
