Title: KERR to Auckland Completed thx
Post by: chinakay on Wednesday 02 August 06 03:01 BST (UK)
After much searching, I finally located a web page with a list of passengers who arrived abord the Shalimar, 21-12-1859. The KERR family for which I'd been searching was included, and looked like this:

<>    [137 of 163]
Name   KERR, Janet
Vessel   SHALIMAR: Dec 23 1859
________________________________________
<>    [138 of 163]
Name   KERR, John V
Vessel   SHALIMAR: Dec 23 1859
________________________________________
<>    [139 of 163]
Name   KERR, Mary
Vessel   SHALIMAR: Dec 23 1859
________________________________________
<>    [140 of 163]
Name   KERR, Mary
Vessel   SHALIMAR: Dec 23 1859

<>    [141 of 163]
Name   KERR, William
Vessel   SHALIMAR: Dec 23 1859
Notes   Joined Auckland Mechanics Institute 23 December 1859.
Source   NZMS 525, 40.

I found it some time last week. Now, I've just been looking for it again and try as I might, I can't find the page. i've done every search I can think of on the two best search engines available, and the thing is just GONE, vanished. Does anyone have any idea what page it might have been?  ???

Apparently you cannot access the webpage on this link (I tried it), so I will tell you how I got to it.   Go tohttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nzbound/lists.htm.   Under Auckland heading click on " Auckland area inward passengers"  This will take you to search page for name of ship and immigrant.   Hope this works okay

YES!!! They're there...I thought they were lost forever :-*

So, next question: is there any way of viewing the original documents? I'm pretty sure it's the right family, but if so, the "John V." family member is a typo. I think he's John Bell Kerr, so named after his uncle who died a year later. It would be very nice to have a look at the real thing.

BTW, anybody know this family? William was the father, Mary his wife, Mary the eldest daughter (I assume), Janet or Jennet the next daughter (named after William's mother) and then young John B. All born in Halifax, Yorkshire during the 1850s. In 1860 Walter was born in Remuera.

Many thanks to everyone who helped out with this!

Hi,

I am one of the decendents of William Kerr who came out on the Shalimar in 1859. Is there further parts of the puzzle you need to solve?

Regards,

Graeme Kerr

Graeme!! Good heavens, this post is 12 years old and I never thought I would find anybody from that family!

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I actually did send a letter to John Kerr who would be the grandson of Walter Kerr, William's son, and Lily Hannah Jubb. I found that much information on the internet, as well as his business address, but he didn't reply.

So you and I would be distant cousins. Very nice to hear from you, and if you are interested in genealogy I can tell you a bit about William's family.

His son Walter and Lily Hannah were cousins, did you know that?

If you make two more posts you can message me. Just say anything at all  :)

I'd very much like to hear about your family, and if you have any old photos I'd love to see them. William was a very brave soul, setting out to the other side of the world. What a pioneering adventure!

Cheers for now,
China

Hi China,

Thanks for your reply. Walter had 2 sons, Norman and Horace. Norman died quite young, and Horace is my Grandfather. He had 2 sons, Alan and John. Alan is my father. I have 2 brothers and sisters and John had 4 daughters and pretty much all live in NZ. I have a copy of the original ticket that William Kerr and family came out to NZ on the ship ‘Shalimar’ in 1859.

Are you on the Jubb side? Are you in the UK?

Regards,

Graeme

Hi Graeme!
Ah then it would be your Uncle John I had written to.

I am in the US actually, by way of Canada. I am both Jubb and Kerr. There were three Kerr brothers who arrived in Halifax from Scotland: John Bell Kerr, Robert, and William.

Tom Jubb married John Bell's daughter Janet, and they had Lily Hannah. Then Janet died.

Then Tom married Robert's daughter Annie, and they had my grandfather. So I am descended from Robert Kerr.

William set off for NZ in 1858 and his wife Ann Morley's family joined them on the next sailing. I think the ship was the Blue Jacket?

I would dearly love to see a scan of the ticket, what an heirloom that would be! I guess the family was right in the middle of the Maori wars.

If you make one more post, you can message me. Click on the little green thing under my cat  :)

Cheers,
China

Hi China,

Thanks for your reply. Very fascinating the whole thing. Yes the family arrived in NZ and settled in Ramarama just south of Auckland. In 1863? their house got wrecked and looted during skirmishes during the Maori wars. In fact an army post was set up at Kerr's farm in Ramarama. ( I have found a publication about this period and it mentions the Kerr's farm)

I will get you a scan of the ticket. My father Alan and his brother John (that you messaged) built a 50' Motor Launch named "Shalimar II" in 1983 after the Shalimar that William and family came out on.

Regards,

Graeme
