Title: Badly spelled place name?

Hello everyone,

I am trying to gather more information about the below family & have come across a problem with place names.

From 1881 Census

Albany Rd, 22 Albany Buildings, Camberwell, Surrey
RG11 /0693/5 page 6

Edward James, 43, b. London, Dairyman Unemployed
Sarah M, wife, 39, b. Llanfakangel Croydyn, Cardigan, Wales
William T, son, 16, b. ditto, wine merchant's clerk
Edward J, son, 14, b. ditto, ditto
John R, son, 11, b. ditto, scholar
Catherine E, dau, 3, b. Clapham, Surrey

From 1901 Census

Old Parr's Head, 66 Cross Street Islington.

Edward James, Head, 34, Publican, Wales, Llanbadawe...here the someone has scribbled what appears to be 'Rad' over the top of 'Wales'

I believe the 2 Edwards highlighted are one & the same person but when I search for either Llanfakangel Croydyn or Llanbadawe I can find nothing with those spellings.  I'd like to prove that these 2 places are close enough to sustain my theory.

Is someone out there able to shed any more light on this?

OK this is testing me a bit. I would say that the RAD would be the abbreviation of Radnorshire - not my corner at all. However, checking out the Genuki site for Radnorshire parishes you have a choice:
Llanbadarn Fawr 
Llanbadarn Fynydd 
Llanbadarn-y-garreg / Llanbadarn Garreg 
Llanbedr Castell-Paen / Llanbedr Painscastle

I would say that none of these really match.

I would say your best bet is to find Edward in 1891 and 1871. Chances are in 1871 the family are still in Wales. I'm afraid I don't have access to the census at the mo, but there are several here who do. Your question will be answered within a short time.

In 1871 the Children are enumerated as born Cardigan. South Wales.
Have a look at the following link which shows the adjoining    Cardiganshire parishes of
Llanbadarn Fawr and Llanfihangel y Croyddin.

Lanbadarn Fawr parish contained the townships of Upper and Lower Llanbadarn y Croyddin

It's been a long time since your query, and I don't know if anyone has replied to you.

The place name could be Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, and with regard to 'Llanbadwe' (where you say that someone has written 'Rad' over 'Wales') - Rad could be short for Radnorshire, which used to be a County in its own right, but is now part of the large County of Powys.   I can't help with what Llanbadwe could correctly be.   There's a Llanbadarn Fawr, which is part of Aberystwyth, Ceredigion.
