I've got these two certificates, of Siblings George & Jane Cushing.
Just need a second set of eyes reading Mothers maiden surname. I thought it was 'Couzins', when I got Janes cert, but on George's it looks like 'Caufiens?'
Can anyone give me their opinion on what it says? Ta.

Don't know WHY i'm talking about Jane! Jane doesn't exsist! It's Anna i'm on about! ;D ;D ;D
-
My eyes plus bifocal glasses would guess "Coussins" on the cert for Anna. Would guess "Caussins" on the cert for George.

They look like variant spellings of Cousins to me. FreeBMD has a marriage of a Francis Cushing, Greenwich Jun 1846 - and on the same page is a Phoebe Cousins.
Anna :)

Thanks everyone.
I wonder if that is their marriage. :-s
Wonder why they got married in Greenwich??
-
cant find them in 1851 ?
-
Nope, although I found what I presumed to be Francis's first wife in Blakeney.
Not so sure it is his first wife though.
-
nor 1841 !
There are a small tribe of Cushings in Greenwich in 1851 ... headed by a Norwich born Robert ...
-
Hmmm..
Is there a Susan living with them?
-
No ..... wife Elizabeth, kids Robert, Caroline & Emma - it might be CushingS or CushingE
-
Think I'll order that certificate to see if it leads anywhere. Hopefully occupation will be pilot or mariner.

Hi there
I have been looking at this and found one or two things, which you probably already have but here goes anyway:
In 1851 there was a 58 year old widow, Phoebe Cousins who was living with Joseph & Jane Easthill. She was his sister in law.
In 1832 Joseph Easthill married Jane Hinson
In 1822 Stephen Cousens married Phoebe Hinson
In 1881 we see;
Blakeney, Francis Cushing 60 Pilot
Ellen 34
Anna 16
Wells,Joseph Easthill 75
Jane 72
In 1851 we see, in Blakeney
Elizabeth Cushing 29
Ellen 4
Harriet 3
Phoebe 10 (I suggest perhaps 10 months)
In 1861 we see, in Blakeney;
Francis Cushing 40
Phoebe 39
Ellen 14
Harriett 12
William 5
Henry 2
George 2 months
We also see a Sarah Cushing who is put down as "Mistress" to John Wordingham and there are children too!
In 1871 we see, in Blakeney;
Francis Cushing 49
Phoebe 49
Ellen 24
William 15
Henry 13
Walter 7
Anna 6
Susan 81 (Mother)
This all makes a lot of sense to me and suggests a few more avenues to follow.
The marriage of 1846 doesn't seem to fit as Francis & Phoebe appear to have married between
1851 and 1856.
Well worth a look at the Blakeney Parish Registers for the marriage and for the burial of Elizabeth and the young Phoebe too.
Best of luck
Teddy
In good old Norfolk. ;)

Are you suggesting that Elizabeth Cushing in 1851:-
In 1851 we see, in Blakeney
Elizabeth Cushing 29
Ellen 4
Harriet 3
has morphed into Phoebe by 1861, and brought her daughters Ellen & Harriet to the relationship with Francis Cushing ?
In 1861 we see, in Blakeney;
Francis Cushing 40
Phoebe 39
Ellen 14
Harriett 12
Given the age of the next child - William (5) in 1861, this suggests Francis & Phoebe 'started' no later than 1856 ?
I see your logic; would be happier if Francis could be found in 1851 and 1841 (his mother Susan should be the clue ...)
Dont follow the highlighting of the 58 year old Phoebe Cousins from the 1851 (sis-in-law) tho ? Are you suggesting a link from her to the 29 year old Elizabeth Cushing ?
Good stuff tho, as you say - food for thought !

Hi
No, I suggest there is a distict possibility that Elizabeth died between 1851 and 1855 when it is quite possible that Francis & Phoebe married.
Francis was very likely at sea in 1851 as Elizabeth was married.
The highlighting of Phoebe Cousins and the fact that she was living with Jane, her sister, was simply that your Phoebe (Cushing) Cousins could, quite easily be this woman's daughter and if, when you find Phoebe and Francis's marriage, you find that Phobe's father is Stephen Cousins, you have a lot of extra information to go on.
I find this family history lark, a very complicated knot untying process. The more branches you have, the tighter the knot, but at the end it is just sooooo satisfying!

Obviously these are just ideas that are well worth checking. Try free BMD for burials of an Elizabeth and a Phoebe Cushing between 1851 and 1861.

Hi again
In 1841 there was a Susannah and William, aged about right but no son Francis. the copy of the census that I have on cd is pretty bad!
