Title: Shand Family of Aberdeenshire
Post by: karanbil on Wednesday 16 August 06 09:03 BST (UK)
My Shand ancestors are mainly from Fyvie/New Deer/Methlick areas.
I have got back as far as Joseph Shand/Barbara Godsman.
I know Joseph's father was John Shand of Balnagoak and I think his mother was Jean Massie. I would really appreciate any information.
Thanks

Hello Bill,

I do not have any Shand ancestors (as yet), but just wanted to let you know, if you don't already, about the Shand genealogy work done by the Rev George Shand. There is a wealth of details;

Hi Bill

A number of the OPRs have, as I'm sure you've found, only the father showing on the birth entry.

You have the marriage of John Shand and Jean Massie on 20 OCT 1745 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland. You then have a number of births showing with only John Shand given as father:

1. JEAN SHAND  Christening: 12 MAR 1752 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland
2. JOHN SHAND Christening: 02 JUL 1748 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland
3. GEORGE SHAND Christening: 06 OCT 1761 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland
4. MARY SHAND Christening: 17 FEB 1759 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland
5. ALEXANDER SHAND Christening: 21 SEP 1746 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland
6. WILLIAM SHAND Christening: 01 MAY 1750 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland
7. JAMES SHAND Christening: 12 OCT 1754 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland
8. JOSEPH SHAND Christening: 25 MAY 1764 Methlick, Aberdeen, Scotland

The last entry for Joseph would fit the age of Joseph (78) in the 1841 Census in New Deer.

With Joseph's death pre-1855 (I can't see any death entries on SP for him), it's hard to prove conclusively. There doesn't seem to be the use of mother's surname either for the John/Jean and Joseph/Barbara's children that I can see.

Have you tried looking for any death details for him and perhaps a monumental incription?

Regards.

Monica

Hi MonicaLes
Thanks for reply
You are right regarding the children of John Shand.
Joseph / Barbara Godsman's children however are shown on Scot Gro, so I'm OK back that far.
Unfortunately I haven't found a death record for Joseph or Barbara.
They are at Mill of Inkhorn 1841 but not 1851.
There was at one time a church of Inkhorn, so they might have been buried there. ANESFHS have no record of it.
Does anyone know if it still exists ?

Regards
Bill

There is a Kirk at Savoch, rather than Inkhorn, but I believe that it opened some time after 1851.  The Kirk closed some time ago for regular worship, but the burial ground is still in use and appears to have been extended from the orginal confines of the grounds.  The stones have not been transcribed and the grave digger records will be of no use.  A disgruntled grave digger some years ago burned them!

Is there any relationship that you know to the other Shand families in Inkhorn in 1841 - in particular James aged 55 at North Seat.

Richard
Thanks for your post.
I will have to travel and have a look at Savoch.
The relationship to James at North Seat is still a mystery to me.
I have not yet tied him to my Shand family in that area.
I haven't found a MI for him or his wife Barbara Johnston, but their son James who married Margaret Stirling, is buried in Methlick next to John Shand and Ann Cassie from Mill of Inkhorn who are in my tree.

Hi Richard
I've just looked at a map of the area 1858 which shows the Church of Inkhorn above the Mains of Inkhorn.Travelling west from Burngrains the road crosses the old railway and then there appears to be a right turn to the church.

That is the Savoch Kirk as it is known more officially.  It is actually on the "main" road which which should more correctly be labelled a lane in common with most of the roads on the map.  When I looked around the graves a few years ago, the only place I could park was a bit of a layby at the entrance.  There are stunning views from it towards the north east.  I don't remember a track to the west of the church.

A number of people named Shand are buried in New Deer Kirkyard, but strangely they are all women.

I have until now thought that James (married to Barbara Johnston) and John (married to Ann Cassie) were brothers BUT I have no proof.  However, the ages given for James in 1841 and 1851 indicate that he is probably the son of John Shand and Elizabeth Patterson born in 1784 (there was also a John in 1790).  They could very well be first cousins but this is speculation.  The fact that James (son of James & Barbara) is buried next to John at Methlick tends to support that they are related somehow.   I note that he does not appear to be listed on the MI even though his wife Margaret Stirling is there.

Both of the James died at North Seat of Inkhorn and there is no clue in the inventories of their estates to any other Shands.  The family Bible of James' daughter Barbara is still in the area and that also gives no other Shands.

In 1841, James has a David Shand, aged 10, working for him.  He looks as though he is the son of James Shand and Margaret Whyte born 1830 at Methlick.

Could you give me the the texts for the MI's 28, 29 and 30 please?

Richard

Hi Richard
You've got me wondering about this John Shand
His birth must have been around 1791
The James I have was born 1798.
1841 Folio 11 pg 3 shows Mill of Inkhorn with head Ann Shand. Male servant James Cassie suggests the Ann is indeed Ann Cassie widow, as John died 1830.

Same page "next household" shows my Joseph Shand/ Barbra Godsman.

My connection is that James Shand of Northseat, when he married Barbara Johnston,  married into my Johnston line.  The William Hetherwick you list on your site was also a son of this Johnston line.  I would though take issue with you over the parentage of the Ann Shand who married William, but will do this off the board.

Hi Anne
I've recently changed service provider and so the webpage I mentioned is no longer available.
I will hopefully set up a new webspace soon.
My tree is on Genes Reunited.
Do you subscribe to that site ?

Bill hasn't been online here at Rootschat since October 2009. He may not receive notifications if he has switched them off or changed his email address.

If he hasn't changed either of those, he should get notifications that we have replied on this topic and hopefully answer soon.

My cousin David Shand taught music at Utah University.  He visited my family in Aberdeen, Scotland with his wife Melba and daughter, Bonnie around 1960.  His father, my uncle David, emigrated as a young man to America - he also visited Aberdeen.

My grandfather was David Shand.  My father was George Shand, and was brought up in Aberdeenshire along with 4 brothers ad five sisters.

I do hope this means something to you.

Very best to you

R Shand

Hi, I have family links to a James Shand who was a farmer on the North Seat of Inkhorn and many of the Shand topics on this page seem to link either directly or indirectly to him. I'm hoping that some people interested in sharing their information still use this forum as it seems like the topic has had no comments for quite some time  :)

Title: Joseph Shand Family of Aberdeenshire
Post by: Shand-Aberdeenshire on Wednesday 17 January 18 08:43 GMT (UK)
Hi All,

I am trying to make a connection with my SHAND family Joseph Shand from Scotland.

I have Robert 1788, Joseph 1790, Elizabeth 1791, Jean 1793 and Mary 1797 with parents William Shand and Isabel Bruce. I can get info on all of these persons except Joseph.

Several Ancestry.com trees show Isobel Maitland as there mother. I have ruled her out because the William Shand she married was in 1795 and on all 5 of their birth/baptism certs on Scotlandspeople show Isabel Bruce as their mother.

Joseph is a ghost after he was born.

There is a Joseph Shand that was married to an Ann Yule in 1826 in Quebec. She died 1826. He married Janet/Jessie Gray in 1830 in Quebec. It shows that he was a widow on his marriage cet to Janet/Jessie Gray. William Shand was present at both marriages yet I don't have a brother named William. It could be his father but I don't think so.

I can't connect the Joseph born 1790 in The Mill of Rathen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to the Joseph who married Janet/Jessie Gray in Motreal, Quebec.

Any help would MUCH appreciated.

You probably already have this, but the following inscription is from a gravestone at Rathen:

Erected by Robert Shand Mill of Rathen to the memory of his father William Shand d. 16 Nov. 1823 aged 73; his mother Isabel Bruce d. 16 Oct. 1836 aged 85. Of their children William and John died in infancy; his daughter Isabella d. 20 Nov. 1845 aged 27. Said Robert Shand d. 26 July 1848 aged 60; his wife Isabella Weir or Shand d. 9 Jan. 1851 aged 58.

GR2,

Thank you for the info. Can you direct me where I can find that?

That all fits with what I have but William dying young doesn’t. The Joseph married in Quebec had a William Shand as a witness. Im thinking he came over to Canada somewhere between 1806-1826. 1806 puts him at 16. 1826 he marries Ann Yule with John Yule(father) and Wm Shand as witnesses. There are a few military records with name Joseph Shand. I thought maybe that’s why he came over. I haven’t been able to confirm it’s this Joseph Shand on those military records though.

I did just find a William Shand married in 1811 in the same church in Montreal, Quebec as Joseph. He died in 1832. That’s all I have on him. No witnesses at the wedding.

Good for you.

What probably happened is that someone got it wrong and published a tree with the error, and other people have found the incorrect information, assumed it was correct and copied it into their own trees.

You are very wise to distrust trees found Ancestry (and on MyHeritage, FamilySearch, Geni, GenesReunited etc etc etc).

The details of the  gravestone come from a booklet of monumental inscriptions at Rathen which I have. It is published by Aberdeen and North East Scotland Family History Society.

The fact that the stone mentions a William and John dying in infancy suggests that Joseph did not die very young or he would have been mentioned too. The death of William in infancy does not rule out any other William as it was quite common to use the same name for a later child.
