Title: My Personal Nottinghamshire Archives
Post by: Chris in 1066Land on Sunday 15 February 04 13:14 GMT (UK)
My personal archive of Nottinghamshire Genealogical Records include:

Nottinghamshire Marriage Index (1st edition)
Nottinghamshire Baptisms (1st edition)
Nottinghamshire 1841 Census Transcription
Nottingham 1851 Census Transcription
Nottinghamshire Burials (1st edition)

all compiled by the Nottinghamshire Family History Society.

Sorry - but the cd's have become very scratched and keep giving read / write errors; so unfortunately can not rely on them any more

If you think that I can be of help to you in your research by searching the above for your ancestors - then please leave your query in this forum

I am researching the Moore family from Carlton / Mapperley and have found in the 1881 census that Isaac Bird (b 24/2/1847 married Sarah ???? and had 5 children all born after 1860.  Can you discover where they were before 1860?   Isaac was probably from Tewkesbury but Sarah was definitely from Carlton.
Many thanks in anticipation

Hi again TeacherMick

Can I clarify a couple of things before I start looking through my archives

Can I assume that as you are looking for the Moore family from Carlton - that Sarah's maiden name is Moore

Isaac and Sarah had 5 children all born after 1860, but as Isaac was born in 1847; he would only have been 13 years old in 1860.
What is the birth date of that first child??

Look forward to you clarifying the above

Hi John
 Notts Christening Index

25.10.1848 Hucknal St Marys, John Harvey, Parents Samuel and Elizabeth.
To Parents of the same name, 23.4.1851, Samuel at the same location.
There is also a marriage at the same church which may be relevant, 8.6.1843 Samuel Harvey/Elizabeth Beeson

Hi Chris,

Noticed your kind offer of look-ups from your records and wondered if you could help me.  I've not got too much to go on I'm afraid.

I'm looking for details of SAMUEL CURZON, born c. 1835 in Nottingham.  I have him on the 1881 census with his wife Susan (born c.1841 Newark) and three children Emily, Matthew and Mary.  The oldest child was born c. 1875.  He has disappeared on the 1891 census although Susan is still calling herself a wife and not a widow.

Samuel possibly has a brother named LEONARD CURZON (born c.1831 Nottingham) as in 1891 his daughter Mary is living with Leonard in Rotherham and relationship is given as uncle/neice.

Samuel is a hawker and Leonard a rag and bone gatherer so the family is probably thoroughly disreputable.  ::)

I don't know how common the surname CURZON is in the Notts area, but if you could find Samuel on the 1841 or 1851 census, or in your marriage index, I would be very grateful.  Since found on 1841 census and a reference to a marriage in 1856.

Thanks,
Sasha.

Please could you search the 1841 Census for: William Harvey (Joiner).  His son Samuel was married in 1843 in Hucknall Tockard (which you very kindly provided information about earlier)

Hi Lesley

Sorry, but only have the 1851 census transcription for the City of Nottingham.

Did put the name Thornhill in the 1841 for the county, but it did not find any matches

Sorry to be so negative

Hi Robin Hood

Thanks for doing that look up.

I have the cd from the Nottingham FHs which is supposed to have 248,000+ names covering the whole of Nottinghamshire in 1841 and the 1851 for City of Nottingham - I hate using it because you have to load the data in Access and search it from there. (I probably was not searcing it correctly)

I prefer to use Excel.

Anyway, I appreciate you helping out

Hi Chris

That's a lovely offer.

I wonder whether I could be so bold as to ask for your help with  any info on the following names:

Benjamin Hickling (profession - Collier) & Ellen Hickling (nee Kirk), I believe they married around 1851 time but their daughter, Eliza wasn't born untill 1854 - Basford area

Joseph Worthington (profession - Sawyer) & Mary Worthington (nee Green), had son Charles Worthington born 21.11.1850 - Bingham area

John Pride born C. 1835 had son George Pride born c 1855 (George married Mary Ann Brown around 1876) - not sure of area in Nottingham (the Prides are proving to be the most elusive).

Samuel Hardstaff born C.1823, married Ann Noble born C. 1811 - daughter Mary Hardstaff born C. 1843 - West Leake area

William Flint born C. 1823, had son Samuel Flint born C. 1844 Sam's mother is unknown but this was also the West Leake area.

I'm sorry if there are a lot but I have become really stuck with this side of the family and have hit brick walls on most sides as I don't have a lot of birth/marriage certificates.

Any help you can provide with these would be really greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Dee

Hello
Chris i was hoping that you maybe able to help me with my research seeing as im now on the trail of the surname Elliott and seeing as you have many nottinghamshire archives could you help with these
JOHN LESTER ELLIOTT-(sometimes known as LESTER ELLIOTT) born wysall, and was 56, in 1891 census.
MARY (possibly ANN as middle name)ELLIOTT, 56, in 1891 census, born sutton bonnington.
According to the 1891 census they were living in Elliotts building and he was an estate labourer, all sounds interesting,as the main house was called Elliotts house, any help would be most grateful on census, marriages, deaths.
               Regards in advance
                Darryl
p.s. I did send you a private message but am unsure whether you received that :)

Hi there

First of all, I was born in the next village to Sutton Bonnington (Normanton on Soar) and my mum and her parents + proved ancestors back to late 17th century all came from Sutton Bonnington - so am pretty familiar with the territory.
When I first got my motorbike in the early 1960's, Wymeswold, Wysall, Willoughby, Rempstone etc were stamping grounds.

Can you please give the reference number to find Lester on the 1891 census, as I was trying to aquaint myself with the family - but can not find them, although I did locate several Elliott families in Wysall

I have been to busy on the boards today, have got several personal messages not read.

Hello there again

I have temporarily shifted from studying Sussex relations to a branch of my husbands family.

Please could you look up the following in the 1841 and 1851 Nottingham census:

Thomas Turner born @1816 Nottingham, married to Mary born @1817 Nottingham.  I'm afraid I don't know the address(es) but I would imagine that it could be something to do with the licensed trade, as later on by at least 1862 Thomas was the keeper of the Black Boy Hotel.

I am hoping they were married by 1841 as at least one of their children (Joseph) was born in 1843.

Much obliged Chris.

Hi Chris,
If possible can you check for a Pitblade or Pladdy(various spellings - same family).  I have a death certificate for Thomas Pitblade, aged 26 yrs. 8 October 1857.  He died in the Union Workhouse, Sub-district St Annes, Nottingham.  He and his mother (widow of School Master) both disappeared after Thomas Sr's. death in Egremont, Cumberland 1849, so I wondered if they were in Nottingham in 1851.  Thomas (Jnr) was born Harrington, Cumb. but Mary Ann (nee McGeorge) was probably born Liverpool, Lancs.  Mary Ann would be around 52 yrs. though I have no definite age for her.

Thank you,

Joan

Hi there

Just had a quick look on the 1891 census (out of curiosity mind you) for the surname ANTWIS.

There were 29 people listed with that name - mostly it seemed in Staffordshire, Cheshire and Lancashire.

What information did the certificate give - was your mums name on there as well / was a father listed.

Sorry to ask such questions but you can reply by personal message if you want

The more I know, the more I can possibly help you.

Hi there

I think my first port of call would be the Family History Centre in London or the Records Office at Nottingham or other county record Office and start looking back through the GRO records from the date of your birth in 1951 (well 15 years back from that date (1936)) for a birth of a Marian Antwis.

You are lucky here in that you have a rare surname - there cant be many around at that time called Marian Antwis - you will probably find her about 1931 or there abouts.

At the Gro you have books (big books) to go through, whilst at the county records office it will all be on fiche or film - much easier to find.  Personally O love looking through all those books.

Other than that - www.1837.com is the same GRO indexex on line, but you have to pay to see the entries (10p per time - could cost you 40/50p per year x 10 = £5 or more) - but may be cheaper than going to a record office.  When you find her birth and reference number then you can take it further because her mum and possibly dad should be listed.

There is freebmd on line, but they started at 1837 and are working forward - got up to about 1908 at the moment, so they will not help you much.

Hope this helps

Hi Sunflower

Many thanks for your info, it's amazing.

How on earth do you find all this information, is it through copies of the Parish Records?  I have always wondered whether to get a copy of the Nottinghamshire Phillimores Parish Records (marriages) and whether they would be any use.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner but I have just been provided with a family tree for one of my dad's relatives all the way back to 1620 - and I haven't really been able to get my head around it all - I am just so excited by all of it.

Kind regards

Charby - if you scroll back to page 2, you posted a query to this thread last August and that's why it's coming up on "new replies to your posts" :)

Juliep123 - Chris hasn't been around for a little while. However there are other people around with these resources. The baptism/marriage/burial disks all contain some of the Mansfield parishes with records up to about 1900, and obviously Mansfield is included in the Notts census. Feel free to start a new thread with any query you have and hopefully someone will jump in and help you out. Hope that helps!

Hi Tippin,

As i explained above, you're more likely to get a response by posting your queries on the Nottinghamshire lookup  request board. There are a lot of people around with resources to help out.

The Notts index disks don't include baptisms for Widmerpool and Whysall but there are a few marriages in Widmerpool

Record  MSURNAME  MFIRSTNAME  FSURNAME  FFIRSTNAME  PLACE        DATE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
184372  BATES     John        WAGSTAFF  Mary        WID    14/03/1831
143888  WAGSTAFF  Isaac       WRIGHT    Ann         WID    15/12/1805
183040  WAGSTAFF  Isaac       HAMES     Hannah      WID    20/06/1830
200122  WAGSTAFF  Daniel      KNIGHT    Elizabeth   WID    15/07/1839

Have you found them on the early censuses?

I am looking for Baptism records of Rhoda Robinson around Blidworth area of Mansfield, date would be about 1829 to 1831.

Father was Robert Robinson
Mother was Mary Robinson

Also, looking for William Walker b. 1798 (approx) Hucknall

 Can you help at all?

Hi Goodlife,

Here is a list of the coverage of those parishes on the Notts FHS disks

Hucknall Holy Cross R.C. Baptisms 1880-1901 Marriages 1899-  H=H
Hucknall Huthwaite  HUH
Hucknall Torkard St John  Marriages 1884-1901  HUJ
Hucknall Torkard St Mary Baptisms 1563-1901 Marriages 1560-1901 Burials 1561-1812 HUT
Blidworth  Marriages 1570-1899  BLI

As you can see, Blidworth baptisms aren't indexed at all. I searched for a William Walker a few years each side of your time frame, but there was nothing showing in Hucknall.

Sorry it's not more positive news. Heather
