Hi Beckey,

Could you give me an idea of what you are trying to find ?
Marriages of Alexander & Ann's children ?
I have access to the Bervie Census for every ten years after 1841, and also the Bervie Parish Register.

Bervonian.

Hi Bervonian,
Thanks for replying, what I am after is any info on Elizabeth Lownie and Roderick Forsyth.

Roderick was shown born Benholm ca.1843, parents John Forsyth & Mary Bain, they were shown 1841 in Cromarty and could have moved after that date.

Elizabeth shown born (IGI)  ca.1847 Bervie, parents Alexander Lownie & Ann Gowan.

On Marriage cert. 9/11/1867 Johnsaven, Roderick age 24 Sacking Weaver living Johnsaven, Benholm (father dec.).
Elizabeth, Domestic age 20 living Gourdon, Bervie.

In 1881 the family (6 children) living Queen St. Bervie and that is as far as I have got at the moment, cost mounting up with "scotlandspeople".

The Forsyth side goes down through John 1868 to a marriage with Elizabeth Wait, my wife's aunt.
So any thing would be a help thank you.

Beckey

Dear Joekar
While browsing through the Bervie stuff I came across your reply and was wondering if the Hugh Lownie 30/9/1840 might be the same Hugh that I have that married Isabel Grieve Mowat 2/12/1864. Although I have his birth date as 11/101840 that might in fact be his christening date. If this where the case I can see a lot more of this family linking to mine.

Hi Donovan.
I trawled through ScotlandsPeople and found that there were 5 Hugh Lownie deaths between 1866 and 1915.  They are:

d. 1876 Bervie aged 1
d. 1886 Angus aged less than 1 year
d. 1899 aged less than 1 year
d. 1907 aged 25
d. 1915 Benholm aged 74

The last one may be the Hugh who married Isobel Grieve Mowatt.

This is the Hugh that married Isabel Grieve Mowatt.  I feel confident that the Hugh Lownie that you had as 30/9/1840 born to Alexander Lownie and Ann Gowan is in fact the same as mine and that my date of 11/10/ 1840 is rather the baptism date and not the birth date. It came off a piece of paper that was handed down through the family.

I am looking for the birth information of a William Lownie, who emigrated to the United States sometime around 1855-56. In the 1860 US census it states that he is age 29 (b 1931). In the 1870 census he is 43 (b 1827). The only information I have is the he came from Scotland.

His children were:
William Alexander
Elizabeth
Christina
Mary Ann
Michael
Ellen
Carrie

William Alexander's son was named Chester Alexander, causing me to think that Alexander may have been a family name, perhaps the father of William who emigrated??

Not much to go on, but wondered if anyone had access to census for perhaps the 1830s and 40s.

Hi Christine.  The 1841 Census of Forfar, Piece: SCT1841/288  has this:

Duke's Wood

George Lownie   34       Linen Hand Loom Weaver        born Angus
Mary          "        33                                                               "
George      "          6                                                               "
David         "          3                                                               "
William       "         10 months                                                 "
Agnes        "         40                                                              "
Bell Wood             10        Female Servant                             "

The Agnes Lownie aged 40 looks to be George's sister.  The IGI  has an extracted entry showing that a David Lownie and an Agnes Shepherd
had a son George Lownie born 24 Nov 1805, Forfar.  I cannot find his parents marriage.  Unfortunately I cannot follow them up in the 1851 Census as the ScotlandsPeople website is down at the moment.

Regards,
Isles.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. That might be a bit late for William - his first son was born in 1856 in Philadelphia, but thena again, he might have married young.

I have a Robert Lownie who married an Annie Munro and they would be born around the 1850s or 60s I think
Robert had a brother John and their Mother was Margaret Lownie

I can find no information on Margaret on who she was married to or if she was married.

She was from Gourdon or Bervie

If you can shed any light on the above I would be grateful

Perhaps the Bervonian can help ....how do I get in touch with him ?

Hi Jamesgee

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

This looks a possible for Robert's birth:

ROBERT LOWNIE  Birth: 16 JUL 1858 in Bervie, Kincardine
Parents: MARGARET LOWNIE

JOHN CRUICKSHANK OR LOWNIE  Birth: 29 OCT 1864 Bervie, Kincardine
Parents:JOHN CRUICKSHANK and MARGARET LOWNIE - the way John's entry has been written up would normally imply parents were not married.

There is a marriage showing for them later on 21 JAN 1865 in Bervie, Kincardine.

This looks like them in 1871:

John Cruickshank 37, farm servant, b. Glenbervie, Kincardine
Margaret Cruickshank 39, b. Bervie
John Cruickshank 6, b. Bervie
Isabella Simpson 7, daughter ? b. Fetteresso, Kincardine
William Simpson 6, son b. Fetteresso, Kincardine
Man Lees 34, servant b. Fetteresso, Kincardine
James S Lees 7, b. Montrose, Forfarshire

Address: Cottar House On Townhead, Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire

Where would Robert be I wonder?

Monica

Thanks Monica & Isles

I think this is probably the correct Robert Lownie although I have him as born 1855 but I can't remember where I got that from ....probably the marriage details ...he married an Annie Munro and I do not have a date for that either.

Perhaps I got the DOB from his son's birth details ( my Grandfather James Lownie )  ....that's more likely.

Monica, 1831 I assume is a census year and Robert would be 13 so perhaps he had left to work elsewhere ?

Thanks for the info on Margaret Isles ....is that as far back as records go ?

James

one more detail ....I have in my documents a DOB for Robert Lownie as 17 Jul 1855...but this is so close I have to assume you have hit on the right one !

Hi James.  I downloaded the following marriage from ScotlandsPeople:

19 Jul 1871 at Paradise Road, Dundee.  After banns according to the Forms of the U.P. (United Presbyterian) Church.
Robert Lownie, Seaman, M.S.(Merchant Service) aged 29 of Dudhope Road, Dundee.  His parents, James Lownie, Iron Moulder (deceased) and Mary Webster (deceased).
Ann Munro, Cop Winder aged 27 of No.10 Dudhope Crescent, Dundee. Her parents, John Munro, Iron Moulder (deceased) and Catherine McGregor (deceased).  Just to add -
Robert's parents were married 18 Sep 1842, Monifieth, Angus, and they also had children Mary McLeish Lownie 24 Sep 1844, Monifieth, and James Lownie 21 Aug 1846, Monifieth.

Thanks for that Isles

I may have been following back the wrong Robert Lownie

Perhaps I need to revisit starting with my father James Munro Lownie born 4/12/1909 in Dundee ...he had 2 brothers and 1 sister ( she died quite young )

Their Father was James Lownie and he married Mathilda May

I can't have the correct Robert as born 1858. His marriage to Ann Munro shows in Dundee on 19 July 1871.

James, I agree, I think you might be going off track. Maybe the point to start at is with the marriage of James and Matilda, and with those parents' details from their certificate, work back to their parents' marriage. With James' parents showing potentially as 1871 in Dundee, there is this entry for example in 1891, all the family showing as born in Dundee:

Robert Lownie 48, AB seaman
William Lownie 20, Printers Clerk
James Lownie 15, Sailmakers Apprentice
Charles Lownie 11
Alexander Lownie 9
John Lownie 7
Margaret Gray 54, housekeeper

Address: 7 St Matthew St, Dundee

The marriage certificate of James Munro Lownie and Mathilda May reads :

19 June 1907 at 5 Park Place, Dundee after Banns according to the United Free Church.  James Munro Lownie, Confection? Packer aged 32 living at 43 Constitution Road, Dundee.  His parents - Robert Lownie, Seaman and Annie Munro (deceased).
Mathilda Hermina ?? May, Jute Spinner aged 30 of 1 Harriet Street, Dundee. Her parents - Carl May, Shoemaker (deceased) and Mathilda ????
The witnesses were John Munro Lownie and Isabella MacKenzie.

Isles, apologies, completely missed your reply on the details of the 1871 marriage  :P With that information and that 1901 census entry, this looks like Ann with children in 1881 - likely father off to sea I would imagine:

Ann Lownie 35, Seaman'S Wife, b. Glasgow
William Lownie 11
James Lownie 8
Charles Lownie 2

Address: 3 St Matthew St., Dundee

And the 1901 entry:

Robert Lownie 58, AB seaman
William Lownie 28, bookbinder
James Lownie 23, Sawmill Labourer
John Lownie 17, Linen Calender Hand

Address: 7 St Matthew St., Dundee

Hi Ev

Thanks for the information my grandmother was Margaret Ann Taylor's daughter but on birth certificate it stated she was illegitimate and although I have the information on the Lownie family tree it would appear she may not have in fact been related to them.

She had quite a hard time one son dying age 13 after an op husband died from an op when he was 37 and another son died in the war age 22.

Have you any other information on the Taylor side of the family?

Helen

I have found a Hellen Taylor who had a "daughter" of the right age living in Stonehaven but don't known if the information is correct. Has anyone got information on the Taylors?
