Hi again Twink
Looking for any information on a David ENSBURY/ENDERSBY who had a son Arthur ENSBURY/ENDERSBY (born circa 1864 in Wrestlingworth) who married a Emma/Emily HAYNES in1884 Wootton.
The 1891 census index did not come up with any David or Arthur Ensbury
but
There are 13 Arthur Endesbry – but none are approx 27 years of age.
But there is an Arthur Endesbury aged 19, servant, who was born in Wrestlingworth, Bedfordshire living at Northhill, Bedfordshire where he is a ‘Footman’ to Annie F Taddy and family, Caldecote High Street, Northill.
Could someone be fibbing about their age.

On the marriage certificate (Sept 1884) both Arthur and David Ensbury have the occupation listed as 'labourer'.
One would believe that Arthur and Emily were illiterate as both put their mark.
-
Have found Arthur on 1891 census as ENSBIRY living in Bedford Rd, Kempston, his occupation Bricklayer Labourer
and on 1901 census as ENDBURY living in Stuart Street, Kempston, his occupation being Plasterer and two of their children as ENDERBY staying with their grandparents in Wootton.
However I've had no luck with the 1881 census as yet >:(

Hi Twink
Had a trip to Luton library yesterday & checked out the 1851 census index looking for Arthur's dad David. Guess what - he isn't there!
Ref HO/107/1753/180 includes Everton, Potton, Cockayne Hatley, Wrestlingworth, Sutton, Eyworth & Dunton (inc Millo & Newton).
Only Wrestlingworth & Potton listed Endersbys. Potton had one family, name of James Endersby, his wife Jane & 2 children and another James on the same page no.
Wrestlingworth (HO 107/1753 Biggleswade 180/1/12 folios 249-267), population 588, had 55 Endersbys listed, but no David. I did write them all down & can type them out if you think it might help!
You said about grandparents - do you know who they were?
I was hoping they might have the parish registers on fiche 1837+ but they didn't have many for North Bedfordshire & none of the ones you would be interested in. I think Biggleswade library keeps a copy. It may be worth contacting them to see if they would check Arthur's birth for you.
David should be in Wrestlingworth in 1861 so it might be worth another post to see if anyone can look him up so you can find out where he was born.

Hi Griggy
In 1891 and 1901 Arthur states he was born in Wrestlingworth. His age is consistant with being born c1864.
In 1901 two of his children were staying with his wifes parents - Joseph and Louisa Haynes in Kempston. I found them on the 1881 census, and Emma (his wife).
Still had no luck whatsoever with Arthur on the 1881.
Their marriage certificate in 1884 states they were both in Wootton at that time. Father of Arthur is definately David - a labourer. I keep re-checking!
I would love a copy of the Wrestlingworth Endersby.... you never know....
Thanks for your help

Hi Twink
Here goes! Am grouping them together where they have the same reference/page no. (Doesn’t mean they are at the same address, but probably lived next door or in the same road. Some families may go over onto the next page of course but you can make out the family groupings in many cases).

Hi again
Checked the baptisms for Arthur Endersby born about 1864 Wrestlingworth, father David. None I’m afraid but there is the following!
27.11.1864 Arthur William son of Sarah Endersby
Could he be yours? Was he Arthur William by any chance?
Checked the 1861 census Wrestlingworth for David – not there. Checked for Sarah, found two.

Sarah Ann Endersby minor spinster father Timothy Endersby, Lab
Both of Wrestlingworth, both left their marks.
Witnesses: William Hale & Matilda Dart (both x)

William Munsey full age Lab father William Morley Lab (definitely looked like Morley!)
Sarah Endersby full age spinster father John Endersby Lab
Both of Wrestlingworth, both left their marks.
Witnesses: Thomas Brockett & Mary Ann Munsey
(The two witnesses were married 15.9.1866 fathers both named John & labourers)
Think these are the two Sarahs in the 1861 census. Had a quick look at 1881 and the Giddings appear to be at Offley, Herts with Arthur Giddings aged 17! All born Sutton which is between Potton, Wrestlingworth & Biggleswade so probably them. The Munseys appear to be at Durham.
Wondered whether a mistake could have been made on the marriage certificate with Arthur just naming his father as David. In 1881 however it would appear that this Arthur took the Giddings surname. May be worth following up though just in case?

Thanks criggy
I spoke to my mum and she said her grandad didn't speak about his family. There is no birth for a Arthur Ensbury or Endsby in Wrestlingworth in 1864 (+/- a year)... so that leaves Endersby (which is what we thought was originally the name). However, there is no Arthur Endersby (or any variant) on the 1881 census.
Arthur William Endersby (son of Sarah) seems to fit the bill (and subsequent information) ...... will have to look into it some more.

Hi Twink
Here is Sarah in the 1861 census.
It does seem likely that her son Arthur is probably yours. When I was a child I remember asking my grandmother about her family tree and she didn't really want to talk about it. She told me, reluctantly, that her mother was Annie nee Oakley. Davey Crockett & Annie Oakley were on the TV at that time so I always remembered the name (giving my age away here!). Of course I've since found out that her mother was actually illegitimate and although named Annie was not nee Oakley so she was obviously throwing me off the scent. It would have been quite a stigma in those days. I still keep an eye out for Oakleys though, just in case!!
Perhaps Arthur had a falling out with his family and reverted back to the name Endersby rather than Giddings.
IGI Also Clara Giddings c 7.10.1866 so Arthur was Sarah's first child before her marriage in 1865 as thought.
