Title: Lawton, Lancashire Where is it located?
Post by: DeeCT on Monday 28 August 06 16:19 BST (UK)
Have this listed as a location of birth on both the 1881 and 1891 census. Need a clue as to where this is. What town is it a part of or nearby. Where would a birth in this location be recorded. --- Dee

Hi Dee,

I do not know of any Lawton in Lancashire - there is one in Cheshire.  However, there is a LOWTON near Ashton in Makerfield.  The register office would be Leigh or Wigan. See:

Thank you for your quick response.
One census image  does look more like Lowton than Lawton.
The other --- well maybe the enumerator was hard of hearing along with having lousy handwriting.
Interesting that the surname I am looking at is LEIGH. Unfortunately the given name is Mary and that means far too many possibilities without narrowing the parameters.

Lowton is near Leigh

Try the link below, don't think records are extracted for that parish but an e mail to the on=line parish clerk might help

Good luck with it

I know this is an old post however I too have ancestors on an 1851 census giving place of birth as Lawton, Lancashire, England.
