I am looking for baptism details of a John Conroy, born around 1821.
Possibly from Roscommon or Galway.
Only details I have are in English census where he gives his birthplace as 'Ireland'.

Why Roscommon or Galway?
If you look at Irish Ancestors Surname Search (http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname) Laois and Offaly have a large number of Conroys too.

Thank you for your reply. This is real needle in a haystack stuff.
The reason I chose Galway & Roscommon is I visited a fair recently and a stall was printing coat of arms. I asked them to look at Conroy and it said the name originated from those two places.
A relative has recently told me they thought Mayo or Sligo had also been mentioned in the past, but without a parish to aim at, it is going to be very difficult.

I'm not quite certain it is the best way to go about things. I wonder why the 2nd and 6th on the list of the distribution of the surname were picked? Sligo is near the bottom of a list of 29 possible locations with 5 families. The names possibly originated from Galway and Roscommon many years ago but you are looking at 1821 and not back into the mists of time. Other than John do you have details of the descendents? Christian names and surnames may help slightly. I mention the surname as you can do a cross check on the surname search .. it is not all that accurate but might reduce the size of the haystack.

I'll try not to be offended at the suggestion that my genealogical research is anything other than thorough!
However, any port in a storm - and any lead I can follow, I will, even if it is at a craft fair (stranger things have happened!).
I have extensive details of the Conroy descendants, who were all born and lived in the Warwickshire area once John had arrived from Ireland.
They were all Catholics, and that's all I know of John - apart from he was born in Ireland around 1821.
Any constructive suggestions regarding how I could find out which parish church in Ireland he was baptised in, would be gratefully received.

No offence intended. It's quite possible there are no records, BC. BMDs did not become compulsory in Ireland until 1864. Prior to that time it depended upon the priests, some of whom were somewhat throughother. It's possible a closer look at the names of descendents may reveal a little clue. The surnames of other Irish families in the Warwickshire neighbourhood where they settle could be worth considering. Did the Conroy family arrive there on their own or were there other families from the same area in Ireland arriving there at the same time?
