I've tried, over and over, to find out what happened to the bodies of the workers on the estate when they died?
I have a lot of relations who worked there but cannot get an answer to this question and also cannot find them in any of the area cemeteries.

There are really only two burial grounds reasonably close to Bowhill. Ettrick and Selkirk.
The stones for Ettrick and Auld Kirk Yard Selkirk have been recorded. No Bathgates at either cemetery. A Pt. John Bathgate is named on the WW1 War Memorial in Selkirk. Deaths for Selkirk Parish 1836 - 1854 have been published. Transcribed by Nigel Hardie.

My parents were born at Bowhill which covers Ettrick and Yarrow. Tattie Howker is partly right in saying people were buried in Ettrick and the Auld Kirkyard Selkirk but he missed out the nearest one. .On the Ettrick side at EttrickbridgeEnd there is the Kirkhope cemetery which was either donated or purchased from the Duke of Buccleugh at Bowhill who owns all the land in the area.Originally Kirkhope was part of Yarrow but now part of ETtrick. I transcribed it myelf and it does not have the Kings mentioned therein. Bowhill covers also Yarrow and again no trace. My family were buried in Selkirk Shawpark and Brierylaw so estate workers were buried all over and i dont know of any burial ground on the estate itself. The late Dukes are buried in Melrose Abbey.
No trace in any of the above mentioned cemeteries all of which i have transcribed.
send me a pm if you need furthr info

Did you get a reply re burial place in Selkirk?
I have recently found the Briarylaw Cemetery where my people are
buried - very old and part of another cemetery at Shawfield

I noticed mention of no Bathgates buried in the cemetery, if the MI's are being used remember not all burials have a stone and old stone can be lost. if the have a wrough idea of which cemeteries you are interested in you need to check the Liar Books - these are usually kept by the Local Authority. Try writing to Scottish Borders Council Burial Services and see if they can do a search in the relevant Liar Book, it can help or try asking the Bowhill Estate archive.
