Title: Ephraim WOOLNOUGH
Post by: Mary jane on Monday 04 September 06 09:01 BST (UK)
Would anyone have any information on Ephraim Woolnough please?  He was born in Suffolk about 1815?  He married Mary Ward in Dec qrtr 1841 East London and stayed in the Bethnal Green area until his death in 1869.  I would like to link him to his Suffolk family

Kind regards
Mary Jane

Do you have the 1841 Marriage Cert - and if so, does it name his father ?

There are a surpring number of Woolnoughs and variants in 1841 Suffolk and Middx - but no obvious Ephraims ....

Hi there,

I was wondering whether you got anywhere with Ephraim Woolnough 10 years ago?

I am a direct descendent of him and have ordered the marriage certificate between him and Mary which should turn up later this week.

Regards,

Jools

Hi Jools
When you get that marriage certificate have a look at The Red Lion Little Glemham ,Plomesgate  Suffolk in the 1841 census.
Chas Woolnough  57 innkeeper y
Susan  54 y
William 25 y
Harriet 15 y
Charlotte 15 y
Robert 12 y
Susan Drake 25 y

Susan buried 13.11.1843 at Little Glemham age 56 is the second wife .Charles buried 25.1-.1850 age 73 also there.
It was a second marriage for both of them 30.1.1822 at Woodbridge. Her name Susan Cattermole.
I'm presuming his first marriage was at Grundisborough 11.1.1803 to Lydia Goldsmith.

No sign of Ephraim's baptism that I can see.

There's a Charles Woolnough late of the Bell Inn Woodbridge fined 10' in 1826 for avoiding the tollgate at Melton Gate who may also be worth a look.

Hi there,

Having looked at the marriage certificate and then your email I was trying to tie down the births and deaths of Lydia (nee Goldsmith), Susan (nee Cottermole) and Charles Woolnough.

I see that there are potentially two Lydia's in the region born in the 1780's: 1781 in Otley and 1783 in Butley. Would you happen to know which one was married to Charles?

From the 1841 census, I am assuming that Ephraim has left home for London and William is at the Red Lion. Were this both Lydia's children and the rest were Susan's?

From the 1841 census, I see that there is a Susan Drake at the inn. Was she just a guest or is she related in some way?

Regards,

Jools

Hello and hope you had a Good Easter.

So Children for Charles and Lydia (I can find)
Mary Ann born 4 bapt 13 ,8, 1804 Dennington
John and William bapt 21.1.1816 at Shottisham

Children Charles and Susan all baptised together 15.2.1835  Great Glenham
Eliza born 1822
Harriet 1824
Charlotte 1826
Robert 1829

Susan Drake is Susan's daughter from her first marriage.
Daniel Cattermole married Susan Pollard 30.11.1808 at Wickham Market
Children Susan bapt 23..3 1812 Woodbridge
Elizabeth and Hannah 18.12.1815 Woodbridge

Susan Cattermole married Edward Drake 19.2.1831 at Great Glenham
Daniel Cattermole baptised 19.10.1783 at Framlingham s of Joseph and Hannah buried there 22.10.1820 age 36.
I saw somewhere but can't find it now that it was he who originally ran the Red Lion at Little Glenham.

There's a James Woolnough blacksmith in little Glenham 1841 with his wife Betsey born 1811-1816 Tunstall who could be another son of Charles and Lydia but Tunstall parish records are not on line.

Susan Pollard/Cattermole/Woolnough was the illegitimate daughter of Christian Pollard widow born Sep 18 1785 bapt4.6.1786 at Walsham le Willows.

As for Lydia i can't find a burial which would hopefully give her age and I'm struggling to fin those baptisms you mentioned especially the Butley one.
But if you look at other marriages for Goldsmith at Grundisborough 10 years either side there are two possible siblings.
Ann married William Woolnough 11.4.1793( burials 1772-18.4.1831 and 1769-14.1.1847 at Grundis.)
William married Mary Bidwell of Clopton 29.6.1797 probable birth for William 1778.

They seem to match with the Otley children, son and daughters of William and Ann Goldsmith.

Of course I don't know the siblings for the other Lydia Goldsmith

Does that help?

Ciderdrinker,

That's a lot to take in. Thanks for the info. I will sift through and add to my records.

Were the parents of Charles (Chas) Woolnough called Robert and Susan? There's a baptism record showing that a Charles was baptised in Dennington on 27 Jun 1783.

Fingers Crossed yes.
It would fit nicely with his date of marriage and the baptism of his first child back at Dennington.
And there's that son Robert who could be named after Dad.

Hi Jools,

Ephraim Woolnough's son Frederick Ephraim was my husband's grandfather. Please could you tell me from the birth certificate which wife Lydia or Susan was Ephraim senior's mother?  And anything else about him that you are willing to tell me about them or any other useful sources.  I am subscribed to Ancestry.

Many thanks

Hi there Sadcatlady,

Frederick Ephraim Woolnough (1879-1960) was my great-grandfather. You mention the fact that your husbands grandfather was F E Woolnough. I wonder if you are the South African branch of the Woolnough's and that your husbands father was Edward A Woolnough who emigrated to S Africa in 1948.

Ephraim Woolnough (1815-1869) parents were Charles Woolnough and Lydia Goldsmith were married on 11 Jan 1803 in Grundisburgh, Suffolk. I haven't managed to find Lydia's birth or death evidence yet. But she must have died before 1822. Charles remarried Susan on 30 Jan 1822. Susan's maiden name was Pollard before getting married to Daniel Cottermole in 1808 and then remarrying Charles.

Where my information gets a bit hazy, Charles' father was Robert Woolnough (born 1757) and mother was Susan Woolnough (another Susan!). Robert Woolnough's father was another Robert Woolnough, who was married to Dorcas Woolnough, although this is getting very hazy!

Hope this helps a little bit.

Regards,

Jools

Hi Jools, You are spot on.   Since the other brother Leonard ACE and his wife Alice Maud died without issue, I'm guessing that your grandfather was Frederick William James (1894-1961?).  He was married to Priscilla.  I have photos of them in the 20s to 40s socialising with Len and Maud, as well as a couple of pics of Ephraim and Eliza.  Fred and Prill went of the radar shortly prior to Fred's death (from cancer I think).  I believe that they had a son called John. But we might be wrong about this.  Could you enlighten me?   (I only met Maud and Ed's widow as I came on the scene in 1990).

My father in law was Edward Alexander Woolnough (1912-1987) who did indeed emigrate to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1948 just before his twins Alan and Mary were born. (He married Edith Florence Regnier in 1936).  Prior to this he had Robert Edward (1940-2007).  All of these children came back to Britain for their education, the latter stayed on where he met and married me in 1990.  All four of Ed's children have gone on to have children and grandchildren of their own.

If my own deductions are correct and you are descended from Fred then I would be fascinated as we always wondered what happened to him and his family.

best wishes

Wow,

So much to ask about your side and so much to tell you about this strand of the Woolnough clan.

Currently on train home so will have to wait to properly respond.

My father is John Michael Frederick Woolnough. You are right about the cancer.

Jools

Hi Jools, no worries. So is your grandfather the cousin John to whom my husband would refer? How many children did Fred and Prill have? I have fished out some old photos and these include a lovely picture of Prill as a young woman, one with Fred i think and various of Eliza and Fred. Talk to you soon.  Maria
