I've just read on teletext that 'perma-tanned' antiques expert David Dickinson will be exploring his Armenian roots in Series 3. Filming apparently begins in June. I wonder who else the Beeb have lined up for the next series?
Regards,
Swampy
-
David Tennant the current Dr. Who
-
When will it be out? I am so impatient arent I?
Anna x
-
Possibly not until next year (2007) although I suppose a late winter scheduling is also possible. Different reports seem to indicate filming at different times eg the newspapers reported the David Tennant one had been done and Swampy's report suggests June for Mr "Cheap as chips".
-
Will David Tennant find he's related to William Hartnell, Peter Davidson, Jon Pertwee, Peter Cushing, Tom Baker etc., ;D ;D ;D
Jean
-
You will have to watch "My Famous Family" instead - not a bad programme - with Bill Oddie again doing the comments.
Cheers

I believe David Tennants real surname is McDonald so I am now hopeful that his McDonalds will link up to mine. That really would make my year. ::)
Linda.

Just read that third series (including David Tennant) due to be shown in the autumn.
We all know what this means......yet more demands for certificates!
Get your orders in ahead of the rush!

yippeee
any other names come up at all.
im going to remember to tape these lot.
-
David Tennant - hmmm I'm warming to him!!!!!
Where did you find out the information from?
Kerry
-
Hi Kerry,
It was in my dad's Family History Monthly; dad is my "assistant researcher" ...at 83 it's keeping him going!
Nanny Jan
-
I bet he's a good one too!
If you find out any more names please let us know.
I can't wait but I can, I don't want autumn just yet!
Kerry
-
He's slow but steady....given him an interest after mum died in 2002. Also makes him remember funny stories from his past, which is supposed to be good for the elderly. His dad felt ill at work, went to the doc who sent him straight to the hospital but nobody told the family. They reported him missing to the police (his wife had died previous year and they thought he'd done away with himself). Three days later a letter arrives from him asking why nobody had been to see him in hospital! Talk about the good old days......
Will look out for more names....

Just read in a magazine that Julia Sawalha is going to be on it. She has just finished filming in france and egypt.
Anna x
-
So far then we have Julia Sawalha, David Tennant and David Dickinson.
Are these confirmed or just rumours? Can't wait for the series to begin, except that that means it will be autumn again!
Kerry ;D
-
It was in the Sun magazine yesterday.
Anna x

Don't know whether the BBC have told us who's in the next series?
If not, (whisper) Barbara Windsor......... ;)
Will have to watch that one.

Now that has got to be an interesting one to watch. I think it is going to be a good series with the choices so far!
Kerry

Can I mention
Barbara Windsor ;D
Spotted in Clacton - and it wasn't for EastEnders.......
Helen
-
I wonder if her laugh was hereditary....
Kerry ;D ;D
-
............... is coming soon!!!!!!!
Went to a open day at the GRO last weekend and they said that the BBC is currently filming series 3!!
Hopefully, if the GRO are aware of this they will be ready when the certificate requests start flooding in!

You will have to watch "My Famous Family" instead - not a bad programme - with Bill Oddie again doing the comments.

Keith
Any sign of that starting again Keith?

Apparently WDYTYA series 3 is set for this Autumn and has moved to BBC1.

Anyone else seen this in the online version of "Your Family Tree"?
Who Do You Think You Are? is back
As the nights draw in for autumn again, the first week of September offers particular delights for family historians. The third series of Who Do You Think You Are? starts at 9pm on BBC1 on Wednesday 6th. It promises, in the words of the show’s genealogist Jenny Thomas, “a lively bunch of ancestors”.
“This series, like the last, is essentially a history series,” Jenny told Your Family Tree. “It is not the names and the dates that matter, but the social context – the times that these people were living through, and what they made of them. The celebrity is a route for the viewer into the past.”
The celebrities in question, in likely order of broadcast at the time of going to press (but do check the TV listings), are actors Barbara Windsor, Robert Lindsay and David Tennant, athlete Colin Jackson, actors Julia Sawalha and Jeremy Irons, kitchen goddess Nigella Lawson, and antiques expert David Dickinson.
With average viewing figures of 4.7 million for the first series and 5.6 million for the second, the BBC has moved the third series to an even more prestigious slot on BBC1. Unsurprisingly, Barbara Windsor’s roots lie firmly in the east end of London. Her programme explores the life of her grandfather Charlie Ellis on the docks and her grandmother’s time as a chorus girl – though a surprise line from Ireland is also discovered.
Robert Lindsay (real surname Stevenson), star of Citizen Smith, My Family and Jericho, meanwhile hails from Derbyshire. He learns about the harsh life of his family both at home and away during World War I.
Julia Sawalha’s lineage is a more exotic mix of silk-weaving Huguenots on her mother’s side and Jordanian Bedouins on her father’s: in the programme she learns about her grandmother’s celebrity status in Jordan, and visits a Bedouin camp.
There’s much more, of course, including a quest for Irish roots for Jeremy Irons, Nigella’s Jewish heritage (including running from a jail sentence) and David Dickinson’s intriguing Armenian origins. Tune in for the full stories!
One advantage to the approach of autumn....... :D

Glad I've just sent for a large batch of certs. (Should be here Monday or Tuesday, yippee!!)
Though this month's 1837online newsletter does have a quote from someone at GRO saying they're already planning ahead for when the new series of WDYTYA starts.......looks like they've finally cottoned on. ;D
We'll have to wait and see what happens.
Sally
-
Lor' you've said it, Sally. better send for everything I can afford before the GRO grinds to an almost halt again.
Still, looks like a merry bunch, should be interesting.

Sally
I will believe that when I see it. Better get my order in now!!

Looks like a really interesting mix of people. Cant wait to tell my kids that the TV will be out of bounds for what they call `Mums genealogy night` I am anticipating the groans already.

I saw the trailer for the first time today, they look an interesting bunch I think?
The programme starts on Wednesday 6 September I believe and I am going out that night to the theatre!!!
Hope the video recorder works!
Kerry

Thanks Kerry, I'd been trying to find out when it started, I'll put that date in the diary.
I'm sure the video recorder will work for you (I always end up setting it twice just to check - silly I know).

Is it just me? But who on earth is Colin Jackson?

Colin Jackson is or was the sprint hurdler he held the world record for high hurdles until recently. and he came second in the last 'Strictly Come Dancing' it was won by Darren Gough the cricketer!!!
Does that help ???

Nigella Lawson - loverly - darlings!!!!! ::) ::) ::) ::)
I'm looking forward to the David Tennant one, purely because I think he is tasty!

You are not kidding Kerry, and as we both come from McDonald stock I am desperately hoping he turns out to be a distant cousin. ::) Some hopes!!!!!
Linda.

;D :D Colin Jackson ;D :D
My delight at finding out that the lovely Colin will be 'sharing' his tree yummy!!!
Will have to tape this series also, good viewing even the 2nd time round on video when not much else on - drives hubby mad lol
Jane waiting patiently for 06.09.06
;D

I do have a major gripe with the progs, fascinating as they are.
IMHO they do not give sufficient attention to the frustrations of FH research, and nor do they mention how easy it is to make incorrect assumptions and fundamental errors - which can lead you miles off down the wrong route. We've all done it, but Nick Barrett and his merry band make everything seem too simple, with the result that many newcomers, fired with enthusiasm by the entertaining series, won't realise the pitfalls.
How many guys are thus quite content to believe, on flawed evidence, that they are directly descended from Ethelred the Unready or whoever?
-
Well im just grateful that genealogy programmes exist at all!
Otherwise im sure all the data that goes on sites such as freebmd would take twice as long as there wouldnt be as many volunteers.
You have to remember of course that the programme is not specifically aimed at people who are already involved in genealogy, its partly entertainment, and therefore should Nick Barrett etc bang on about reading census documents and waiting 7 days for a certificate to arrive, people would switch off. Thats part of the appeal of WDYTYA that it has a quick pace and they usually cover a large part of the person's tree or a small part in detail using a variety of sources in an hour.
I hope this series is as good as the last two and long may they continue!
TF
Wrinkly - I think someone called helina posted a message for you on the even lighter side
-
They said tonight that Babs Windsor is on the first programme.
Bet she's not at all what we expect.
Robert Lindsay.........mmmmmm dishy ;D ;D ;D
-
I wish you ladies would concentrate on the information given out and not the looks of the men!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
Keith
-
Sorry Keith, you're just jealous I bet.
If you were on TV,maybe we'd be saying "corr that Keith Bateman's a bit of alright"?
Or maybe we wouldn't ??? 8)
Carol
-
I am really jealous - if it was Barbar Windsor 40 years ago - it might be better!! ;)
Keith
-
We have only had one series over here in OZ, and that on cable tv. Would love to be able to see the other two and hope that it gets shown here. It was really interesting to someone who has never seen, and probably never will see, England in all her facets.
Anyone want to tape them all for me and post them over. OOOPPPSS sorry, that's breach of copyright, ignore that comment.
Must agree about David Tennant, very yummy that one. Loved him in his tiny almost insignificant part in Harry Potter as well. Sorry Keith, I'll go back to concentrating on the census and the bmd again. But a girl can dream can't she ??
Karenlee

Keith
I bet you are just a little bit interested in watching the Nigella episode and not just for the genealogy ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
Kerry
-
Haha Kerry
I'm sure there's a couple of points the blokes will like about THAT episode ;) ;) ;)
-
Sounds fair to me, they've got Nigella, we've got David and Robert!!! :o :o :o :o :o
Kerry

A very valid point which has been raised a few times before - generally just after each series finishes and the delays start to kick in for certificates. ;)
Reading about this new series they appear to be going into new territory and I only hope that they give more information about these aspects ie
David Dickinson - was adopted and traces his parents
Colin Jackson uses DNA to establish his "roots" ... the previous series have IMHO been very light on certain aspects of research each of which are generally covered in greater detail in the accompanying books
-
I hope that maybe this series they will be a little bit more realistic about the whole process. Let people know that you don't just walk into a record office and come out five minutes later with the correct certificate. Realism - order from GRO and wait 4 weeks usually!!!!!!! ::) ::) ::) ::)
Kerry
-
And wait 4 weeks, kerryb?
When the new series starts what's the betting 4 weeks will be a distant dream.
'We used to get them in four weeks, now we have to wait........'
:D
-
Oh Paula I was trying to be optimistic!!!!! ;) ;) ;)
Kerry
-
Know what you mean. Thank goodness I've got nearly all mine. Of course there always seems to be another worm crawl out of the woodwoork in the Eliza Ann story. Thought I had all hers, now we've discovered Callus William Webb/William Webb/William Challis(my dratted poisoned Challis) Unfortunately he seems to have been the notch on the bedpost that was Great Grandfather. His line are fairly easy to trace would you belive, now we've found him, so.......what do you reckon, 4 weeks?......More?.......
Something always happens when it's to do with that particular branch of the family.
Longing to watch the next seriers, but did it have to happen just now...just....now? ::)
-
It seems that living in OZ certainly has its disadvantages! :-\
I remeber expressesing my feelings of jealousy when series two was released and hoped that cable would deliver the goods in the not too distant future, but that just hasn't happened. :'(
Like Karenlee, I would dearly love to see it but didn't realise that taping it was a breach of copyright. :o OH RATS!!
-
GMTV are doing their bit again next week they have already done this last time
-
Wrinkly - I think someone called helina posted a message for you on the even lighter side

Yup, I'm terminally grumpy and I'm wrinkly too (also follicly challenged) but 'grumpywrinkly' is someone else (although clearly we have much in common).

Which bit is that brian???

For all uk members 6th Sept 9pm bbc the third series of WDYTYA is on :)
Rob

I managed to see one of the GMTV bits last time.
Too light and fluffy for me, a bit like the rest of GMTV!!!
Kerry

Thanks Rob
I will,no doubt, totally forget that date.
Always manage to miss these programmes and the repeats :o :o :o :o
Tricia

It will be on BBC 1 instead of its original home on BBC2.
The first episode is Barbara Windsor, who is reported to have links to the artist John Constable
-
How about adding to this link on the day to give me a kick up the you know what ;D ;D
Tricia

watch this space - or pretty close to it ;D ;D

The first episode is Barbara Windsor, who is reported to have links to the artist John Constable
Now that will be worth finding out about, I don't believe Babs could possibly be related to John Constable!
Kerry

Yes Folks it's back. :) Who do you think you are ????
So get those orders for certificates in pronto.
I love the programme but, maybe I am just nosey ;) ;D.
Roll on next wednesday in East Anglia.

Oh ye of little faith .. ;D ;D
Next you'll be telling me you don't believe the american "genealogist (????)" who claims that she is descended from the family of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene.
-
Well I don't!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ::) ::) ::) ::)
Kerry
-
I wonder if she got all the census records ::)
.... after all that was why the parents were supposed to have ended up in the stables ;)
Between claims such as this one and the numbers of others who claim royal ancestry..... for all of the claims to be true the various royal families would need to have behaved like the proverbial rabbits while the rest of the population lived a celibate lifestyle. ::) ::)
Why claim something that cannot be backed up with "real" evidence ?
But back to the topic - according to the blurb in the TV magazine Babs Windsor does indeed have links (although quite distant) to the said Mr Constable - it should be interesting viewing.
-
Wonder if that is the "rich side" of the family that is mentioned in the TV advert. We'll find out next week!
Gordon
-
The Americans do claim links to Jesus Christ dont they? Just kidding
Rob
-
Just to let you all know that the series 'Who do you think you are' is starting again this Wednesday 6th September at 9pm on BBC1 ..... I just love it....!

Hi all
As most people will know on this site a new series is starting this week, but don't you wish
they would go into much more detail of how to find your Ancestors.

Hi Sirius
I will have to record the first programme on Wednesday evening as I've got visitors.
Yes, I agree it would be interesting to see more detail as to how they find the information.
Did any of you watch the Channel 4 spin-off hosted by Bill Oddie? At least dear old Auntie Beeb doesn't try to make us believe that a 15th cousin 5 times removed is our ancestor!
That series tried desperately to find any link, however distant - even through marriage! - between an "ordinary" person and such dignitaries as the Duke of Wellington, Florence Nightingale and Queen Victoria. The lucky individual was then presented with a family tree showing how they were "descended" from their famous "ancestor".
Regards, Bill
-
quite entertaining tho !

Yes I jumped up from my chair when they came up with that idiocy. I'm just very surprised that Antony Adolph, who was closely involved with the series, allowed it to go through.
-
Can't wait for 9 p.m. Wednesday evening. The football v Macedonia can go on the back burner. Isn't it going to be Barbara Windsor? And will she discover that all her ancestors do indeed originate from the East End of London. I bet not...!
keith
p.s. Presumably not trying to prove her descent from the House of Windsor...

A quick history of Barbara Windsor for those who can't wait. Avert your eyes now if you do not want any advanced information. :)

Oh Nooooooooooooooo.
My friend has gone to Turkey for 2 weeks and left me a list of taping to do for her
and one is for the Wednesday night drama at 9.00 on ITV. :'(

downstairs doing my friends taping as I can not let her down or miss W.D.Y.T.Y.A. ;D ;D ;D

Does anyone know if its going to be repeated during the week on BBC 2,3 or 4
I am college on Wednesdays now scared in case video recorder plays up :-[
-
Searched listings on bbc site for who do you think you are. Barbara Windsors is repeated on Tuesday night at 7pm on BBC2 so presume it will be the same throughout the series?
Gordon
-
Reading down the listings, it's Robert Lindsay next week, travelling to Gallipoli to investigate stories of his grandfather in the war.
That should be interesting for a lot of people.
