Title: John "Jack" JARNELL
Post by: KMFRoberts on Friday 15 September 06 19:19 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am seeking more information on John Jarnell born c 1895 in Lincolnshire, don't know where? He married an Annie Parkin, ?when.
He had children called Morris, John, Olive and Muriel, I think these were from a previous marriage.
Annie Parkin had a daughter out of wedlock called Rose. I think Rose married, moved to London and had 2 daughters, she was killed in a car crash and her husband died soon after. The story in the family goes, he never came to terms with losing Rose.
I think John Jarnell lived in Gainsborough.
Morris never married.
Olive married a Ukranian gentleman and I think Muriel married twice but died quite young.
Can anyone help with this sparse information to go on?
Thanks for looking,
Regards, Kathryn

Cant find anything on a John Jarnell b. circa 1895.

Have a John Jarnell b.circa 1891 Wainfleet St Mary, son of Benjamin and Fanny living at Friskney in 1891 and 1901

Have a John Jarnell b.circa 1882 Gainsborough son of William and Sarah.

Any idea which is the right one? (if either)

Hi,
Thanks for responding.
I know that the last family is not the right Annie Parkin, as I have details about her parents and siblings. She was born in West Ham, her family originally came from Gainsborough but moved to London looking for work for a while before returning in the early 1900's. She was born c1897.
As for John Jarnell, I suspect the one from Gainsborough could be the right one, as I know Annie and family lived in Gainsborough for many years, and he had been married before so could be older than her. I will have a look at that entry.
Thanks for the lead, much appreciated.
Regards, Kathryn

The John Jarnell b 1882 Gainsborough, son of Wm and Sarah, is my husband's g uncle and he married Sarah Ann Bailey in 1908.  I don't recognise any of the names you mention which is strange as the Jarnell family is relatively small.

Hi Guys,
Jennie; Thanks for the information, at least I can eliminate that Jack Jarnell. As you say it is not a common name, so why it is proving so difficult I don't know, someone out there must have a connection to solve the mystery.

Alli; Thanks for the look up, but it's not the same Annie, her father was Joseph Parkin, I do have the 1901 census details for the family now in West Ham, just before they returned to Gainsborough. Thanks though I really appreciate you taking the time.

Regards, Kathryn

Hi Kathryn....why are you so sure your John was born in 1895. There was only one Jarnell birth in 1895 and it was for a 'Willie' in Gainsboro 7a 761.  Could this be who you are looking for but was just called John after his father or grandfather.  I had a similar experience for an 1850 birth. Looking for an Enoch for months ....i was crawling the walls with frustration.  He was known as Enoch the whole of his 73 years but when eventually traced his birth he had been baptised Joshua. His son who was known as Joshy his whole life had been christened Harry. This is a funny old game ::)

It seems you may have to look at the John with parents Benjemen and Fanny :-\ The 'Willie' i found also turned out to be a son of William and Sarah and brother to the other John who Jennie has claimed. . I also had another rellie who didnt want to seem too much older than his bride so entered age 22 on his marriage cert when in fact he was 29 :o

As Jennie has given you info on the 1882 John it looks likely that the 1891 John is the only other Jarnell(John)born anywhere near 1895.

                                 best wishes cheryle

Hi,
Thanks for the information, especially the marriage reference which I hadn't found. Now I can send for the certificate and check his father's name, that's real progress for me. My Great Aunt Annie died about 1988 in a nursing home in Gainsborough aged 92yrs and we have lost touch with any remaining family, so this really helps me.
Heartfelt thanks to you all,
Kathryn

Hi,
Can we revisit this question please?
I now have the marriage cert for John William Jarnell and Annie Parkin married 23.10.1924 at Gainsborough register office. It states that John William was a widower, aged 40 making him born c1884. It gives his father's name as William Jarnell an engineer's labourer.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kate.

Cheers for that Ambly,
It would seem to be the same guy that Jennie has, that confused me as Jennie has no knowledge of him re-marrying and has him with Sarah Bailey. I would be interested to hear back from Jennie, so we can compare notes and solve the mystery.
Thanks for all your hard work, much appreciated.
All the best,
Kate.

Kate

The Geo Wm & Sarah A Dunderdale are my husband's grandparents (The clue is in the list of people I am researching).  Sarah's brother, John Wm Jarnell was living with them on the 1901 but I didn't think it was the same person you were looking for as the dates didn't match with mine.  He was working as an Oil Mill Labourer.  I have John Wm married to Sarah Ann Bailey reg Dec Q 1901, Gainsborough 7a 1650.  The children I've found for them are Violet b 1912, William B b 1913, Edna Maud b 1916 and Phyllis b 1918.  There are possibly more born earlier in their marriage.  I am not aware of a second marriage but I haven't looked for one.  I have quite a bit of info I am happy to share with you.

Hi Jennie,
Thanks for coming back to me.
It could possibly be the same guy. He was a widower and 40 years old when he married my Great Aunt Annie. There were 4 children that my mum and aunts remember who were Jack's from his first marriage, my Aunt Jean, the eldest of mum's sisters thinks there were others but they had left home before he re-married. I will try find one that I can send for a birth cert for out of those who were known to my family, that should confirm if it's the same man. I would be really interested to share info.
Regards,
Kate.

Hi Suz,
Thanks for that.
It is definitely my Great Aunt Annie's details, she died in a nursing home in Gainsborough, she and my Gran, (her sister), went into the same home. As for John, there was definitely a son called called John so I think I will send for the certificate and check it out.
Thanks for your time, appreciate it,
Regards,
Kathryn

Ooops-I have corrected John's birth -I think you must have realised he was b 1927 not 1027!!!!

Sorry about that!!!!!

If this John is the son -he would also be son of Annie, as Annie married in 1924????

Kathryn

After searching quarter by quarter I have found the four births for the children you mentioned.  The first was in the same quarter as the marriage.

Olive Jarnell, reg Dec Q 1924, Gainsborough 7a 1118
John W Jarnell, reg Mar Q 1928, Gainsborough 7a 1142
Maurice Jarnell, reg Mar Q 1931, Gainsborough 7a 1111
Muriel Jarnell, reg Mar Q 1935, Gainsborough 7a 1017
(all mother, Parkin)

I have searched up to and including 1940 and haven't found any more births for this marriage.

I think it must be my husband's great uncle John William b 1882 who married twice as the family is so small and they were the only ones in Gainsborough at that time.  The Jarnell family is originally from the Coningsby area.  As you say you have the marriage cert I can only assume John Wm lied about his age as I have several instances of his age and it is always consistent with a birth in 1882.  I have details about John Wm's father's tragic death, including a coroner's report and newspaper report of the time.

On a previous post someone made mention of a Willie Jarnell.  In fact John Wm had two brothers called Willie (not William).  The first born 1892 died the following year.  The second Willie born 1895 went into Gainsborough Workhouse at the age of five, with some of his siblings, following his father's tragic death

It seems that KMFRoberts hasn`t posted since 2014, but you might connect with another person from your family tree.
