Fiona I would be very interested in any information you may have regarding the McGarry's of Antrim, especially around Randalstown.

My grandmother Sarah Gaynor (nee McGarry) is the daughter of Henry and Mary Anne McGarry (nee McAteer). Other siblings are Mary, Esther, Kathleen and Henry Jr. Henry snr apparently left Ireland in 1920 and died in Chicago in 1936 without retruning to Ireland.

My grandmother married Hugh Gaynor (from Randalstown) and they had four children Anthony, Mary Anne (my mother), Hugh jr and Cornelius. They left Ireland for Australia in 1957 on the SS Orontes?

I am in Australia and I am trying to put together our family tree.

Regards,

Sean

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

You haven't given us any idea of dates so it's rather hard for us to know where to find information or suggest where you can search next. Usually photographs are kept by family so you might need to ask any living relatives for help on that.

Hope someone is still interested in this thread.  My GreatGreatGrandparents were William M(c/e)garry (b 1792/d 1882) and Bridget (nee Weir) (b 1794/d 1864), in the 1851 Census the family was at 18 Aghanamoney Ballinderry.  They had about 12 children, of interest is Letitia who married Patrick Graham in Glenavy in 1860.  Letitia & Patrick moved to Scotland in 1870, where my Grandmother Mary Jane was born.

Thanks KG.
It is fortunate that William is in the fragment of the 1851 Census.  Also, there, at 13 Aghanamoney is his brother Henry and family, including two neices, Mary & Ellen.  Under Henry's entry is their Father William, who died in the winter of 1847 aged 82.  When Bridget died in 1864, at Aghnacommon Lurgan, her death was registered by her daughter Ellen.  H'mm, Bridget's death cert states that she is a widow, William "died" in 1882, they definitely had a son James, who married Margaret Peel in 1854, James was a JP.  I need to do a bit more head scratching.
The gap between the 1851 & 1901 census' makes it difficult to track families, particularly if they moved away.

Hi KG,
You must be a busy person and I appreciate your responses.  I have to admit that I have extracted, from the RC parish registers of Aghagallon & Glenavy every reference to McGarry (& variations), same from NI Direct & UHF.  Hundreds of entries which I have attempting to "sort" into families, using the 1851 census fragments as my starting point, plus the "sponsors" names from marriage & baptismal records.  About to start buying marriage records, hoping to pick up the Father's names.
Always on the lookout for clues.  One of these Great Aunts was married to a Titanic seaman.
Regards & thanks,   Mick

Mick,
Like lots of RootsChatters, we just love supplying genealogical information!

Have you tried the free website irishgenealogy.ie
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
All records are free to save, and catholic marriages go back to 1864 (protestant marriages back to 1845). The name of the father of the groom and the bride usually mentioned.

KG,
Was aware of this site but had not used it, due to its limited coverage, nearly all my "relatives" are in the North.  Except one whose address on marriage in Belfast in 1870 was Dublin.  Five minutes on the site and I turned up a daughter's birth/baptismal record in 1875.  Every little bit counts.  Thanks
Mick

KG,  Calling on your expertise, what do you make of this information, ages??
At 34 Montiaghs in 1851 Census - Elizabeth McGarry 100 years old, daughter-in-law Ann 32, grandson Felix 10, grandaughter Elizabeth 7; in table 3 Robert, son, died 1843 aged 36, grandson John died 1843 aged 2.
Robert married Ann France on 23/Aug/1838 in RC Church Ballinderry.

Firstly it took a while to find but it's McGarrey in 1851 census.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1851/Antrim/Upper_Massereene/Aghagallon/Montiaghs/35/

All ages look correct apart from grandson John who was aged 2 months when he died in summer 1843. Son Robert died in autumn 1843. John fits in between Felix and Elizabeth in birth years. Elizabeth McGarrey claimed to be 100 but she may not have been (she probably didn't know when she was born). Young Elizabeth has 7 in years column but also 6 in the months column (don't know why!)... a mistake?

KG,
Apologies, with so many spellings for McGarry I have not been keeping precise records, although I have downloaded all the documentation.
Yes, all the ages hang together except for Elizabeth, had Robert been another 30 years older it would have made a better fit.
