Title: Grays department store - Gray family
Post by: grlune on Wednesday 20 September 06 08:01 BST (UK)
Looking for direct descendants of Edward Gray who owned Gray's department store in Birmingham.  My great great grandfather worked for Edward Gray at Mr Gray's private home which I think was in Moseley.

Any info greatly appreciated.

You might try searching under GREY as that was the correct spelling of the department store in Bull Street.
Many happy memories of shopping in there.

Hi

Just saw your message. I knew them!

Edwards children were Teddy (Edward) and Jane both born in the early 1940s. I seem to recall that they moved out towards Shelsey Walsh area in the 50s-60s.

Hope that helps

Colin

Hi
I am new to this forum so hope this is the right place to post this question.

I have recently discovered that my ancestors may have be been related to the 1920s/30s owner of Greys department store in Birmingham. Having found and read this post, it looks as if it would have been Edward Grey.

Does anyone have any more information about him or his descendants?

Any help greatly appreciated.

I worked in the 5th floor offices at the store in the 60s and was told that the name actually had 2 letters 'e' in it, thus Greey but it was decided to drop the one 'e'. I later read somewhere that  there was a nameplate above an office door on the first floor of one of the 2 men named Mr Grey/Greey with the spelling with 2 letter "e's."

I've found out a bit more since I posted last year.  Their name was Grey/Greey (2 Es in 1911 census)  Founder Edward Greey died at his home Hopwood Grove , Alvechurch in 1925 and the business continued to be run by his 4 sons - Edward Albert, Horace, Arthur and Frederick.  There were also 3 daughters Annie, Eliza and Mary. My great aunt mentioned another family member - a  Charles Grey who lived in Barnt Green in the 1930's, who is apparently a direct relative of ours. I can't find him on any of the records. Has anyone else heard of him?

I am sorry that I cannot help you with any information about Charles but I do remember a Mr Greey coming to help me on the telephone switchboard during sale time in 1964/1965. I was on my own to operate 2 boards and it was frantic so he came to see why I hadn't got to him immediately. He understood when he saw how it was and joined in to take calls.

I have come across a Charles Gordon Leslie Greey who was the son of Henry Greey. He lived in Birmingham and I think may have been linked with the Grey department store. A relative of mine knows that the Greey family lived in Barnt Green in the 1920s/30s. She is not sure if Charles lived there though.

Hi,

Been a while since the last message on this subject but just seen the previous feeds. My grandfather was Derek Greey of Alvechurch, son of Horace. My mother was Jane Greey (brother of Edward - teddy) as mentioned below.

Hi Anthony

Interested to read your message.  As you will have read, I am trying to find information on a Charles Greey, who I have been told either lived in Barnt Green during the 1920’s/30s, or had connections with other members of the Grey family in Barnt Green at this time.  Just wonder if you have heard of him or know anything about the members of the Greey family who lived in Barnt Green?

I’d much appreciate any information you are able to share.

I have been searching my partners tree and found that Edward is connected however his name is Edward Charles Greey born 1856 Bow, London. Marries Ann Hammett 1877 Hackney. Occupation Draper. he has at least 8 children born in the various places he moves to : Bedfordshire, Lancashire, Manchester and Birmingham.  Those children are:
Albert E  bn 1879 London
Horace B 1881 Bedfordshire
Arthur A bn 1882 Bedfordshire
Frederick L bn 1885 Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Annie Evangeline 1889 Manchester
Eliza Constance 1891 Manchester
Mary D 1895 Birmingham

My partners connection with this family is though Edward Charles Greey's wife  Ann Hammett Mother Ann Pett bn 1820 Shebbear Devon - d 1866 Ann Hammett bn 1855 Crediton Devon, is her only child her father Simeon Hammett went on to marry another Ann. And that is where our connection lies with Ann Pett his first wife.

I hope this helps

Rachel

P S  I would like to ask you a question if that is alright?   My partner Michael Pett has done a DNA test and has found many matches however there seems to be a question mark over his connection with the Pett family but we have only found one on this branch, I wonder have you done one on any site if so which one Ancestry or My Heritage ?

Hi Rachel

Interesting!  Yes I  have done DNA test and its on Ancestry.  Its listed under my full name Angela Bann.   I've looked at my matches and dont have any with surname Pett.  Hope this is of some help to you. I'm only really looking at direct male Grey/Greey family members
Thanks
