At last, it's Wednesday night again!!!
Can't wait!
I know nothing about Colin Jackson except that he has an actress sister who, I think, was in Casualty so I am looking forward to this one.
Kerry
-
;D ;D ;D
isn't he lovely ;) Chinese to be ordered, cider chilling lol and I am waiting so patiently lol :D
Jane
-
I'm looking forward to this. I met Colin last year (he was awarded an honourary degree from my uni the same week I graduated), and it's going to be a pleasure to see him exploring his ancestors. :)
-
Have just booked the TV!

Scottish Television area the program is delayed until 10.40pm because of football.

PS
An excellent edition of WDYTYA!
-
Bless him! He was just so excited by it all! Ah that feeling of finding something or someone :)
Very lucky in being able to find everything so well! No brick walls there...
Not sure about how he managed to break the news about his nanna's grave to his mum - think maybe the direct approach not the best??
-
Thought this particular episode was simply stunning. What a good type Colin Jackson is - all his various family members and people he met in his search for his roots quite obviously genuinely liked him and took to him. His enthusiasm and delight and appreciation for the whole pursuit meant I found a perpetual smile on my face; except of course when he discovers what actually happened to the last resting place of his grandmother.
The very best of any of these programmes that I have seen, by a long chalk...
keith
-
One of the best episodes ever!
meles
-
Wow! best one so far, he found so much and all totally riveting.
David
-
I started off not being sure about the DNA thing, but ended up being engrossed as usual, and getting quite emotional about Colin's gran being moved to a communal grave because no-one paid the rent on the original grave site. :'(
I thought Colin came over really well, enthusiastic and so excited about it all.
Can't wait for David Tennant next week. :D
Sally
-
I enjoyed that! Very nice young man and seemed to be very enthuisiastic about it all.
I wonder if he will keep up the family history!?
Kerry
-
Hello
Absolutly brilliant ;D Really captivating and interesting especially him finding his 'Uncle Speedy'!!!
I think the best one of the series so far, and like Keith Sherwood, I also had a perpetual smile on my face :)
acceber
-
That was fantastic, absorbing, happy and sad at the end!
Wonderful to meet all the distant families, and the information that Adam Wilson emerged from slavery to own his own land.
Definitely the best so far!
Jean
-
Brilliant again - WDYTYA have definitely done their research into what we should have in the programme for this series
Loved the part where he found out about his fathers side being linked to slavery and the original tribes of Jamaica - my friend Dean will love to hear about that as he is from Jamaica and his family are doing the family tree
Couldn't believe how lucky he was with the search for his Grandmother's parents and their parents as well though had a big lump in my throat when he found his Grandmother's grave - unbelievable about exhuming the body if rent isn't paid!! :o I felt so sorry for Colin's mum and brother and sister when they realised. But as Colin's Uncle said - they are in Panama, a totally different country to us and that is the way they are.
David Tennant next week so let's see if WDYTYA are getting better with each one - no complaints so far
Carol
-
When he was on the computer in panama and he typed in his grandfather's name and oh up popped his details I commented 'huh doesn't happen like that in real life'
Still needs a bit more realism!!!
But then that wouldn't be interesting to follow the dead ends would it??
Kerry
-
Yes - it was an excellent edition - one of the best. Not quite as moving as Stephen Fry's in the last series. But masses of info. It went at a cracking pace, just like Colin went over the hurdles.
It was great that he got to stand in a lot of places - the harrowing discovery that his grandmother's grave had gone has to be offset against the wonderful feeling he had in finding the land his ancestor worked after being freed from slavery.
What next? Can they top this one?
JULIAN
-
Julian
Of course they can, next week with David Tennant!!! ;D ;D ;D swoon swoon
Kerry
-
Totally agree, great program. I just wish the beeb would stop putting people (ie. his mother) in her married name on the tree that they show on screen
Casalguidi
-
Have to agree, the best one yet.
-
I couldn't agree more, the most interesting one by far, thought Colin was superb through out.
Patrish.
-
Fascinating; what a pleasant young man. Looking forward to David Tennant next week.......
Nanny Jan
-
Excellent show. I loved seeing his enthusiasim and seeing him walking in his ancestors footstps. I've got a funny feeling they'll all end up going on holiday to see it all.
-
Fantastic program tonight....to be able to follow his family back to the slave traders and a topic some still find raw..Colin's pride in his family shone through.
To come through so much with him it was so sad to find out about his grandmother.
Tazzie
-
It went at a cracking pace.
You can say that again! what a great programme, think I'll have to watch the repeat next week though to absorb it all

I didnt realise they were related whose name has she taken?
-
Fantastic episode, i have recently discovered my relatives were plantation owners during and after slavery was abolished and often had children with their "maids" from what i have found they "freed" their slaves well before it was abolished and seem to have been involved in the emancipation of slaves. Really interesting finds and so sad about his gran.
Kev.

As the others have said, an excellent programme tonight.

Brian
Packer was Colin's Panamanian grandma's surname, wasn't it?
Gladys Roslyn Packer, daughter of Richard Augustus
Wonder why she picked that for her stage name, rather than Jackson?
SandraC
-
Excellent! Colin was so enthusiastic about finding his roots.
Susan :)
-
Sallysdad talked all the way through this one >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
Luckily there are re-runs - can't wait, it sounded brilliant! :) :) :) :) :)

Really really enjoyed the programme and what a lovely man Colin is. Very sad moment at the end but I think one of the best ones I have seem.
Linda.
-
I felt so sorry for his poor mum when he told her that her mums remains had been taken out of the original grave because no one could be found to pay the grave rental and reburied in a commom grave and they couldn't even rebury her in another grave because the authorities would not know which remains where hers :'(.
Imagine having to pay grave rental and then when every one dies and no one is left to pay the rental voila dig up the remains bury them all together not a head stone or marker to say who is in this mass grave. Its like eviction or even recycling bet they don't have to open many new graves just dig up a non rent payer and you have a new grave to Let. As Colins mum said its disgusting and so disrespectful.
Colette
-
He must be the first one who was chirpy and happy, all the others seem to have been miserable in comparison?
Kerry
-
Brilliant show, Colin was so happy to meet all branches and was very down to earth, the excitement when he found out the information, his smile made me smile ;D,
I did think he may have told his mum quietly about the final resting place of his grandmother, I will admit to having a tear in my eye.
All in all, one of the best I have seen.
Jane
-
I do agree Jane, if I had been him I would have told them in a less public way and it was difficult to watch. Perhaps he underestimated the effect it would have on them.
Linda.

I thought and please correct me if I am wrong that it was said last night that Colin's parents married in 1965, therefore Suzanne was born before the parents got together in 1962.
Kerry
-
I was curious about the marriage they found - was it for Jacob?? and they didn't mention the wife. It looked like Stewart on the record, but they didn't mention her at all.
Tracy
-
There were a few loose ends I thought but then as my daughter decided it was time to do her recorder practice at the same time, I may have missed a few bits. I dont use bad language but I am sure you can imagine what I was thinking.
Linda.

;D ;D ;D ;D
Each Episode seems to be even better than the last !
I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and was surprised to find Colin's sister was the actress, Suzanne Packer.
Looking forward to the next one as David Tennant's real name is McDonald, and it'll be interesting to see how he gets on with a popular Scottish name like that.
8) 8) 8) 8)

Yes it was definitely the best, the Panamanian and Scottish Presbyterian Connections were very interesting.

Don't tell me we might actually meet a brickwall at last!!!!!! That would be too much!!!

-
Yes definitely the most interesting.
Panamanian conneection interesting, I'd have like to have found more about the Scottish Presbyterian - of all the improbable links!!!
Bob
-
and how sad to hear how many died during the construction of the Panama Canal
-
Dam i missed it. that will teach me to be out with the kids and friends. guess ill have to wait to see the repeat. so untill then i wont be looking here as i know you will all discuss what happened.

Absolutely great programme.
I was doubtful at first because they launched into DNA testing and followed a social history of Jamaica rather than a family history but it all turned round and I was hooked!
There was a Stewart line that wasn't mentioned and I wonder if it related at all to Moira's family? Common enough name but coincidences do happen ...
I was curious about Duncan Campbell as well where in Scotland he hailled from I wonder? I wish all illegitimate born children could be found a father so easily!
I thought this one was more believeable than others. The Panama database was similar to the Angelsey mining database and I found my direct ancestors that easily.
Fantastic programme. The ladies are being spoiled this series.
Good use of newspapers in this one and how they fitted the repossession to the earthquake. It's good to keep in mind what was happening in the local environment. If you have stone masons look at when the local quarry went out of business for example.
This episode definitely deserves a second viewing when it's repeated.
Pam
;D

cbcarolyn suggests Packer was not a name they knew before he went to Panama, but Colin told how she had visited the family in Wales (or England, as he kept saying, to my irritation) so he knew her personally, not just the name.
Apart from anything else, Packer was presumably his mother's maiden name - and, if Kerry is correct that Suzanne was born before Colin's parents were married, then Packer is her actual surname - she didn't change it.
Great programme, though.

Really enjoyed this one....excellent :)

I really enjoyed the programme and I agree that Colin comes across as a really nice guy, but I didn't think he showed as much emotion about his findings as you would expect - he seemed to be playing the jolly tv presenter too much.
it's only a minor quibble - I always enjoy WDYTYA so much, whoever the subject is. However, I don't think it was the best one ever, by a long shot.
I didn't know David Tennant was really a McDonald! That should be interesting - I can never remember whether it was the McDonalds who massacred the Campbells or the other way round! I have Campbell blood in me but I'll forgive him because of that lovely smile!! (Or should he be forgiving me?) Can't wait!
Jill
-
I thought Colin *was* emotional but tried not to show it too much on camera - at the point where he left the cemetery having discovered the exhumation he kept having to turn away from the camera. I too thought it was a great programme - really enjoyed it.
Jill - if it's the Glencoe massacre you're referring to I think it'd have to be David Tennant forgiving you - the McDonalds were massacred by the Campbells. (Of course, the Campbells didn't get on too well with my MacGregor lot either... ;))
Anna
-
Anna,
I was just imagining how David Tennant might show his forgiveness, but back to reality...
I'm beginning to think the Campbells weren't very popular at all! I'm just reading the Jacobite Trilogy by DK Broster and the Stewarts didn't like us either because we didn't take Bonnie Prince Charlie's side in the Jacobite uprising! I think I must come from a much nicer branch of the Campbell clan!
I'm hoping that we'll see a lot of Scottish record research, although I have read that David travels to Northern Ireland to trace some ancestors who were involved in the sectarianism which could be a bit upsetting for him.
I'm really looking forward to it - is it really only Friday?

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I missed it

Suzanne may have had to change her surname if there was another Suzanne Jackson on Equity's books.
Harry H Corbett (of Steptoe & Son fame) had to add the H because of Harry Corbett (of Sooty fame) I think the same thing happened in America with James Stewart & Stewart Granger. Stewart G having to change because James was already in films.

I saw this episode last night, ( I missed it the first time 'cos I was on holiday) I too thought it was a really good programme, I thought Colin did show emotion especially over the exhumation of the grave, and a common re-burial. I liked the way they showed the records, and the genealogist in Jamaica, showed there had been some previous work to find the information!
now looking forward to tonight!

I'm a bit behind on this one as I only got to watch the video this afternoon. I thought it was wonderful, the best of all the series so far for me. Colin Jackson seems a lovely man. He was obviously very moved when at his grandma's grave, and when he said the rain said it all, I had to reach for the tissues :'(
