Title: FOSTER family of South Australia
Post by: pollyperka on Saturday 23 September 06 08:48 BST (UK)
Looking for any information on Benjamin Foster, and his wife Mary Knight. They have at least 6 children born in South Australia b/n 1847-1861. I have no idea how to find out whether they were born in Australia themselves or came out from the UK.

Their daughter Elizabeth b. 14 2 1856 is married to William Edward Baker.

Benjamin FOSTER and wife are listed as passengers aboard the David Malcolm which sailed from London via Plymouth arriving Pt Adelaide 23 Jan 1847

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dicummings/Images/Ships/1847DavidMalcolm.htm

The ship appears to have carried some free miners. I have been snooping about and eventually managed to find

FOSTER Benjamin = KNIGHT Mary Tavistock Devon Dec 1/4 1844 9 527

you can order the certificate from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
This will give you a staring point. There is a Benjamin FOSTER aged 15 a Male Servant in Meavy Devon in 1841 (Ages rounded down in 1841 census so 15 would fit with Benjamins age at death) Meavy is in the Reg Dist of Tavisock. Mary Knight is too common name without more to go on..............All the Best

16.6.1880 - Harriet, aged 22, m. Robert Johnson Carson, aged 23 at Presbyterian Manse, Gawler, grooms father Robert. - NB - Can't find a birth for Harriet.

14.7.1881- Elizabeth, aged 25, m. William Edward Baker, aged 25, at Trinity Church, Adelaide, grooms father Wm.Henry

20.6.1883 - Susanna Foster, aged 22, m. William Minney aged 21, at Res of John G. Minney, Prospect, grooms father Isaac Minney.

On the SA marriage CD - has father as James, not Benjamin?
Age fits with Mary Jane - could be mistranscribed on disc?

Hi Lynne,
I couldn't find their births either but their father is Benjamin Foster on their marriage records so I put them in.
They were also born in the right time frame,
Harriet c1858  & Emma Jane c.1849.
Sometimes the births aren't registered.
You could follow their lines and see if they ended up in the Aldinga area where their parents died.
Just thought they were worth mentioning because of the fathers name.
I will recheck the Bisa to see if there are any other Benjamin Foster's mentioned. - Sashar

Hi
Yes, Lynne Emma is there.
The headstone says-
John Lilicrappe Foster, beloved husband of Emma.  Died 10th July 1967 aged 67
And
Emma Jane. died 6th Dec  1930 aged 70. With John.

They must have been also living in or near Alinga with Benjamin and Marywho died in the 90's [as you know]
Ben & Mary's headsones clearly relate them to one another too.

From the SA Post Office Directory 1903:-
Foster, John L, gardener at Aldinga.
Carson, Robert J, driver of Fussell Place, Alberton
Minney, Wm, teamster of Milner St, Prospect

There is 1 George Dawson living Mead St, Exeter - not sure if he is yours.
No Tuckett or Tuckell.
There are quite a few William Baker's but only 1 William E Baker, he was a farmer, Mambray Creek.

Hope that helps a little more - Sashar

Hi, I realise this thread is really old now but thought I would give it a try.

I have ancestors from Shaugh Prior, Devon that came to Aldinga, SA as well and am wondering if they are related to your Fosters. They are James Friend Mumford b. around 1829 and Sophia Foster/Forster b. around 1836.

I have recently found her parents to be John Forster and Jane Lillicrap. I think Jane's parents may be Thomas and Mary. The name Foster seems to vary from Foster to Forster to Forstor in various records.

Because of the name Foster and Lillicrap I'm wondering if they are related to any of the people that have been listed in this thread. If you know of any connection I would love to hear. Thank you.
