I am looking for information about Joseph Chaplin born in 1847 to Edwin Chaplin and Judith Golden (Golding). He migrated to the colony of South Australia and married there in 1878.
Thanks,
Nye

I cant see Judith in 1841, but there are Golding families in the right area - based on the Cranbrook Regn district - including Goudhurst and Hawkhurst.
If you get that Marriage Cert we would be able to her fathers name - which would also verify the father shown above for Edwin.
Hope this helps, ScR

Thanks ScR,
Unfortunately Edwin died in South Australia which has only scant details on certificates. Judith died in Victoria so I went and got a copy of her certificate of death. Her father was named Richard Golding and she was born in Tunbridge Wells in about 1820 and married there in about 1844 so 1845 could be right, is Cranbrook in the same district?
Any further birth information about Edwin and Judith would be valued.
thanks,
Nye

Hi Nye
The parishes covered by Cranbrook registration district are Benenden, Cranbrook, Frittenden, Goudhurst, Hawkhurst and Sandhurst.
http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/cranbrook.html
Tunbridge wells isn't too far from some of these parishes but comes under another registration district http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/tonbridge.html
You might find the following map of registration district boundaries helpful http://www.kent-opc.org.uk/Registration_District.htm
All in all, I would say that the marriage reference found by Scroppers looks very likely to be the correct one.

Cranbrook and Tunbridge are adjacent Regn Districts - Goudhurst village in the Cranbrook District, which figures in the 1841, is less than 6 miles from Royal Tunbridge Wells.
Its also a similar distance north of Ticehurst, where a Judith Golden, Father Richard Mother Judith has an original Parish Register Baptism entry in the IGI ... 29th October 1820
In 1841 there are 2 heads of family in Goudhurst named Richard - Judith could have been away in service at that sort of age ...
The marriage seems right in that case - not very common names, right area, right timeframe.
As I said previously, obtaining the Cert would verify these findings ... http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
Let us know how you get on ?
Kind regards.

Thanks ScR,
I shall try to follow up on the certificate.

Hi,
It’s a long time since I sort this information and have found quite a lot of information about the line.
My great grandmother was Annie Eliza Chaplin (1878-1968).
