The meet in Hastings is yet to take place but, as the nights draw in and the Winter Sun and Skiing holidays are thrust before us, I was wondering if you might cast yourself forward a few months to a possible RC Meet in the Scottish Highlands some time next year.
I thought that a weekend meet in Inverness/Highlands might be a nice option - scenery, history, monsters, archaeology, etc. and if it was before June and after August, no midges :) It could even be fitted in with a family holiday. Travel here via that el cheapo airline is pretty good.
I notice that there hasn't been a meet held north of the border - and Pam says she tried to get interest in Glasgow/Edinburgh at some stage but there weren't any takers :( :( :( :(
So are any of you interested?
Gadget
PS - I have no connection with the Scottish Tourist Board!
PPS - here's a site that gives some info:

Gadget
Well I'm definitely interested in a Scottish meet. You have painted such a wonderful picture of you Scottish idyll, the area must be worth another visit. I would combine with a week/fortnight holiday to justify coming up that far.
Was looking for an excuse for another excursion north of the border ;D
Kerry
-
I would love to come if I knew, love Scotland, Edinburgh is easy for me but hopefully will be able to get further if need to ;D
Jane
-
I'll definately be up for it, of course I was supposed to be going on the meet this weekend but I forgot :-[ :-[ :'( :-\
I could possibly meet anywhere within reason. A lot of hubby's family live outisde Edinburgh and it's any excuse for him to get up there for a weekend - so he would be happy to drop me off wherever I need to be and get me a B&B, if it means he gets a weekend drinking beer with his cousins and uncles ;) :D
-
Hi all,
Hubby and I are planning a trip back to his hometown (London) next year, and also plan to sally forth across the border into ancestral tramping grounds in the northeast of Scotland - Inverness being one of the places we plan to visit!
Don't know yet when we will be there. We want to come in the middle of the northern summer (midgey season!) just because every other time we've been back to England it's been winter, and the weather has been incredibly depressing. Plus, this way we get to miss the Canberra winter!
So, no definite dates or plans for us yet, so if there's interest in your idea, Gadget, we might see if we can plan around it.
Prue
-
Hi Prue
There won't be midges in Inveness - just West Coast ;D Certainly a tour of some of those distilleries we found the other week might be in order.
So 5 of us so far - Arranroots did say she was interested but she's hiding in a closet somewhere ???
Gadget ;)
-
Hi Gadget,
Could combine it with a trip to see son no. 1 who lives outside Crieff. Sounds interesting.
Nanny Jan

Gadget ;)
That sounds like a fine idea...for research purposes, of course. ;)
Prue
-
Just heard that the reticent Keith is interested if we hold a meet. He will have to check his passport though ;)
Some of the attractions of the Highlands (Glasgow and Edinburgh are well known) -
Culloden, Skye, Bonnie Prince Charlie and the military roads
Crofting,Highland Clearances and emigration
Callinish, etc.
Loch Ness Monster
Whisky Distilleries
and lots and lots more history and scenery

So 5 of us so far - Arranroots did say she was interested but she's hiding in a closet somewhere ???
Note to self: don't tell Gadget anything you don't want disclosed on the boards later!
::) ;D ;D
Having a fraught week here, all my machinery is packing up at once. My own reseach would be Black Isle mainly, but happy to do anywhere - family permitting!
;)
-
Go on Arranroots - I have very beady eyes ;D
I was trying to provoke a response and it worked :) :) :)
You'd love it up here - who knows, next year you'll have lots of time.
Gadget
-
Oh I know I love it - second home! (not literally, but that would be nice)
Shame the forebears don't still have their hotel in R&C...
;)
-
Crofting and Highland Clearances sound interesting Gadget as does Whisky distilleries.
My mum and dad visited one 2 years ago and bought home whisky for my brother and brother in law but none for Pete because he doesn't drink it! What about me :( :( :( :( :(
Kerry
-
I'd be interested, lovely part of the county, would have to be later in the year for me though, as am off to Australia in May/June to visit parents-in-law for their 50th wedding anniversary - hoping to get more done on their family history before then :)
-
Great idea Gadget :) I'm just a hop, skip and jump away from either Inverness or Glasgow/ Edinburgh so I'm definately interested. I've McRae's in my tree from Inverness shire and R&C so would love to have a look round the area...have been meaning to for a while. :)
Elaine
-
Hi Elaine
Nice to hear from you. Long time no speak - Aberdeen, aren't you :)
I think we're getting a mini-bus load already (plus Keith :D )
Looking good :)
Gadget
-
Not to dampen your enthusiasm Gadget, but bear in mind that there is also a projected Dublin Meet in 2007. Might be an idea to coordinate with that?
;)
-
Yes - I'd noticed that - will check all the dates out. Could be a bit like the Manchester/Hasting meets this year.
Who knows, I might get to both - I've been to Ireland twice this year - cheap flights to Dublin and Belfast :)
Thanks for raising it.
Gadget
(PS - Dublin's very expensive :o - only joking, we had a great time there)
-
Yes, I'm in Aberdeen...good memory :)
I've been hoping that someone would organise a meet in Scotland, not being the organised type myself, I didn't want to attempt it ;D
Elaine
-
I am sure we could make it to Scotland. Whoever would organise it would have to have a good knowledge of the area as Scotland is all new to me.
Sarah :)
-
area as Scotland is all new to me.
Its very easy to recognise ... just keep heading north and when you hit civilisation you are in Scotland ;D ;D
The three main venues proposed each have their own unique attractions and possibilities.
-
Note to self: don't tell Gadget anything you don't want disclosed on the boards later!
Arranroots
I know what you mean !! ;D ;D ;D
Shouldn't have left Mobberely, Cheshire - right next to Ringway Manchester airport - my passport is full - with stamps for Wales!!
Do they have airports up your way Gadget - or is it flying boats and land on a river? :o
Can I fit in my bowls and a trip "up north" - I suppose so :P
Keith
-
Now Keith, we won't let you in if you go on like this - you with newly found Scottish ancestors and all ;)
I am currently in ENGLAND. I've discovered that they have a different currency (not as pretty) and speak with strange accents.
It started raining as I crossed the border :(
Gadget
-
Good thinking Gadget,
To anyone who hasn't been to Scotland - "Do so now". It has everything you could want.
I would absolutely love to visit my old haunts once again. Unfortunately I wont be able to, but I hope yo don't mind me making a few suggestions over the next few days/weeeks/months.
I know this sounds like a tall order but if you try you can do, so why not try to aquire accomodation at somewhere that evokes the relevant atmosphere - a place of interest and history. I can immediately envisage a place like Kinloch castle on the Isle of Rhum. Sounds unlikely but believe me these things are possible.
Rhum is one of the small isles, a group of the Inner Hebrides which are the islands one sees on the road from Fort William to Malaig on the west coast of Scotland.
Rhum was for many years known as the forbidden island due to it's intense privacy - the private owners ( Bullough's) took over from the traditional owners the McLean's who had cleared the once thriving population and built their home, Kinloch Castle. The luxurious castle with its ballroom, elaborate Great Hall and unique and complicated showers, proved a unique and secluded venue for private parties with a guest list to be envious of. apparantly guns were often fired at approaching boats to discourage the curious - thus the 'Forbidden Island'.
Suddenly after one visit they locked the doors and left, never to return, leaving music and instruments by the stands in the gallery, in the ballroom and wine in the cellars.
Today, the Castle, still as it was when the family left, is a perfect example of Edwardian life, including superb furniture and fittings, a Steinway piano, and one of the few operating Orchestrions (automated organs operated by rolls) in the world. not to mention to some members )who shall remain anonimous) the unique collection of victorian porn thatI am told is there.
After the family left, the island was bought if I remember correctly by the Nature Conservancy and access was still severely restricted, the only people allowed being researchers and a small number of walkers and climbers.
I was lucky enough to visit Rhum twice. Once in the 60s and again in the 70s when we visited the Mausoleum at Bay of Harris. It goes without saying that the Mausoleum belonged to the Bullough family. However, a more poignant reminder of the past is the nearby common mans cemetery, where a brief inspection reveals whole families dying with days of each other of the plague.
Now try to tell me that this wouldn't be a memorable holiday.
Denn
-
Denn won't be aware of this probably, but the Autumnwatch programme on BBC is currently featuring the delectable Simon King on the Isle of Rhum, where he is deer-watching.
I'll go now, if he is still there...
;D
-
Well folks, I don't mind organising/helping out for any proposed meet in remote Scotland. Glasgow and Edinburgh are a wee bit further away. I do love Glasgow though :)
There are all sorts of places that we could consider in the Highlands. We have plenty of time to think about it all - it's manana country.

Put me down as very interested in a meeting in Scotland. The time frame you referenced is fine.
I have never been to Scotland so would need assistance .... driving, getting around or whatever. There are enough flights to Scotland from the East Coast of the US so just maybe an el cheapo airline would be possible.
yn9man :) :)
-
Goodness :o
You'd come all the way from the US of A - woweeee!!!
Gadget
-
Cool yn9man!
I expect you will find it easier to get to Scotland from the USA than I will from Sussex, apparently my navigation skills are not that good!!!
Mr KerryB and I are planning the RC meet as beginning or end of a Scottish holiday. 4 years is too long to be away!!!!!
Kerry

Gadget - ;D
Of course I would expect to be WINED and dined in an appropriate manner "since coming all the way from the US of A" ... and then being a "foreigner ... lacking an accent".

I MIGHT find it easier but without my Global Positioning System I may not make it out of the US.
I was thinking of doing the same thing. Will depend on 'xact location of the RC meeting though.

Hello,
I wish I could reply to multiple locations - I'm in the Stirling area, so most places are fairly accessible.

Hi Clare :)
Stirling might be a possible compromise venue - Highland-ish with lots of history and within jumping distance of Glasgow and Edinburgh. A bit further to Inverness though.
Are you a possible helper :) ;) :)
We're still waiting on the date of the Dublin meet at the moment but things are looking pretty good :.
Gadget

I'm getting very excited about this!
When I was 8 years old, my parents took us on a European holiday (Kombi camper and all) - I still have a book I bought on that trip, inscribed in 8-year-old scrawl on the flyleaf "Bought at Stirling Castle" :) We camped there, or somewhere very nearby, and there was a bookshop and I bought this book because it was about horses, and I was pony-mad.
I hope the meet happens and that our trip happens....still interested in checking out a distillery or two at some stage? You know, for family research purposes and all that...
Prue

Yes, well having recently discovered that hubby's ancestors owned land which now houses the Cragganmore distillery, hubby is suddenly much more interested in family history, and suggested that we might like to visit the ancestral home when we're over there...purely for historical insight, you understand! ;) ;D

Do I need a passport to get there ???

Dunno Joe...but I certainly do! :D

Mrs B and I would certainly be interested in Glasgow, or possibly Stirling/Edinburgh, but all dependent on timing (and Mrs B's Paisley parents willingness to child-sit).
Whatever, given the interest shown by those far afield, it might be worth assembling a list of supplementary activities for those travelling a long distance so that they can put together their own "package" around a RootsChat meet and making the most of their stay?
JULIAN
-
Hi Julian :)
Glad you and Mrs B are interested!
I'm sure that we can arrange something but we'll have to wait and see where and when before we get to the 'what else can we do' stage
As you probably know, there are masses of things to do in the Edinburgh/Glasgow corridor plus various trips to both the southern parts of Argyll and the islands off the Clyde estuary and the Perthshire/Stirling/Fife/Borders. Not forgetting my special ancestral bit, Dumfries and Galloway and all those other places....................
I even know of a good Bistro in Paisley, if you need one ;D ;D ;D
Gadget
Prue - you are absolved, of course. It was Joe and Keith that I was concerned about. I know you have ancestral links with distilleries :D
-
I'm keeping my eye on this too. It would be nice to go to a meet but there's too many factors involved (work etc) for me to make a commitment to it at this stage, sorry

I take it that Gadget as the instigator of this venture is volunteering for the role of organiser ?

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........................
If it's in the Lowlands, I might not be able to do much more than act as list maker, etc.
Are you offering :P :P :P :P :P :P
Pam has lots of exams :( :( :(
Russell's just retired so he has time on his hands :P :P :P :P

PS - Paisley is not the gourmet centre of the world is it ::) ::) ::)
-
Are you offering
NO
Paisley is not the gourmet centre of the world is it
;) Paisley is a lot of things but it is definitely no gourmet centre - there's not even a decent cafe about
-
Hum, Hum :(
Well, as list maker, will I put you down as a 'not interested' or 'maybe' or 'will attend if doesn't have to do anything'?
I think Paisley's out. It does have the advantage of having good public transport for a quick exit - Mr and Mrs Julian will just have to leave the kids there and get a train to Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling/Inverness.
I don't recommend the Highlands at the moment. It's very cold and we are having snow/hail squalls.
Gadget
-
It's not that I am not interested it's more a matter of "I've been left holding that particular baby before" . :D
I would certainly try to assist if it was within my power to do so but I think you have to have the matter clearly sorted with a definite itinerary for the day - although I am sure that will clarify itself once you have a definite destination. (and hopefully a dry day ;D )
-
Thank you, Falkyrn - I'll put you on the list :) (memo to self - he's not too good with babies)
We're trying not to clash with the Dublin meet so I'm waiting for news on that front.
And as for a 'dry day' ::) ::) ::) ::)
Could those who are interested put up here any particular things that they would really like to find out more about or any ideas, please :)
Gadget
PS One of the places that I would really love to visit is New Lanark - Robert Owens model village, fairly easily accessible from Edinburgh and Glasgow - see
http://www.newlanark.org/
Shame on me for not going there yet :-[
-
That might be quite a good idea Gadget. I haven't visited New Lanark either and am sure there would be some kind of hostelry nearby. I think that might interest both folk from home and abroad
-
That sounds really interesting Gadget. I don't have any relatives in Scotland (at the moment) so have no particular interests, apart from meeting you lot and I love Scotland and any excuse to visit. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D But I would find it interesting to look at such things as any interesting centres on highland clearances and crofting?
Kerry
-
I'm with kerry re. the crofting suggestion - are there any folk museums or open air museums in the vicinity?
Gadget, let me know if I can do anything to help. I feel sort of like a spare wheel, stuck all the way over here, and planning to just fly in and enjoy the spoils of your toils!
-
I'll check up on these, Prue :)
There are so many interesting things in this fair land. I was hoping to line up someone like Jim Hunter (several books on The Clearances) if we held the meet in Inverness.
I gather that the Dublin meet looks like JUne at the mo, so it could well be that we're thinking Aug/Sept/Oct.
And don't feel guilty - you're a working lass and still manage to give so much help (and share a laugh) on (and off) these boards :-* :-* :-*
Tell you what, you can buy me a dram :D

Ach now that means the Belfast Meet had better not clash with the Scotland Meet :D
Would "Other Scotland" mean one of the lovely offshore islands by any chance ???
-
I'm with Kerry too, I've found so many rellies who were crofters that I'd love to visit a centre such as http://www.highlandfolk.com/
Another place that I would find interesting if we choose the Inverness area is Culloden http://www.culloden.org/english/index.html
I found this googling... http://www.britainexpress.com/scotland/museums/index.htm
By the way, I visited the Sma' Shot Cottages in Paisley this summer and what a lovely place it is http://www.paisley.org.uk/attractions/sma.php
It's run by volunteers and free...they just ask a small donation. The volunteers give guided tours and really bring the place to life. Well worth a visit if you're in the area :) :)
Elaine

Thanks for those links, Elaine :)
We might end up having a long weekend tour :D
Christopher - this is getting to be a bit like a Celtic Cousins ReUnited, me thinks. Maybe Wales, the Isle of Man and Cornwall could be included :D ::) ::) ::) :D
Offshore islands - we are all residents or descendants of this little archipelago - what a formidable tribe we've become :)

Hi Gadget,
Count me in (provisonally) unless holidays clash with dates.
Anything I can do to help - give me a shout.
Anne.
P.S. I'm a bit biased for Stirling. Not only because I live there, but because it's pretty much central for everywhere and only half an hour from Glasgow or Edinburgh.
-
Thanks Anne, you will be on the list :)
I think we could all have an interesting and fun time!
Any special free access/cheap entry for Stirling heritage places?
Stirling does have a lot going for it, especially because accommodation would be cheaper than Edinburgh/Glasgow but in easily travelling distance of both.

My family appears to come from many areas of Scotland --- Morayshire (Rafford, Elgin), Lanarkshire (mainly Glasgow and environs) and Stirlingshire (Campsie). I am sure as a I go farther back that I will find additional areas of interest. Therefore, any central location would be fine or an area with good public transportation.
Besides getting to know other "rootschatters" I am particularly interested in where my relatives lived, occupations and way of life. Would also like to know more about Scottish records online, evaluating and verifying evidence (information). One item that still puzzles me is why my gggg grandmother Julia went from the US to Scotland. All the other relatives went the other direction .....
Thanks for putting this meeting together (and related administrivia issues) and hopefully I will be able to attend.

Had a wee look to see if there were any 'special rates for Stirling heritage type places but it doesn't seem there are, just the usual concessions.
A quick list of places of interest: (which are all on the Bus Tour Route - £7 per day ticket)
Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument, Bannockburn Heritage Centre, The Old Town Jail, Smith Art Gallery & Museum, Argyll's Lodging, Stirling Bridge (featured in Braveheart), Church of the Holy Rude with a wonderful old graveyard and not fogetting Stirling Archives. (These are only open Monday - Wednesday though)
Then there's Falkirk - twenty minutes away - Callendar House and the Falkirk Wheel. Callendar House is also the home of Falkirk Archives open Monday - Friday.
I know, I know, I'm sounding like a travel agent here!
Anne
P.S. Hotels, Inns, B & B's by the dozens

Wow! Thanks for that Anne. I think we might have to have a week's meeting the way things are panning out :)

On the assumption that I already belong to the place, Glasgow would be great!
Incidentally, what areas of the country use the word 'belong' in this way?
In the North East, it's usual to ask people "Where do you belong?" but in the North West a similar question is just met with shrugged eyebrows!
-
We say 'where do you stay' up here, Paul.
Confusing at times but one gets used to it :)
A piece is a packed lunch. I will keep you informed.
You, Mother, Colin, sister and all the rest of the E numbers are welcome :D
But you'll need to bring some Magnates with you - aka J K Rowling, Mohammed Fayad, Paul MaCartney (I can't spell him! :-[) ,et al.

Hi all :)
The Falkirk Wheel is the most amazingly cool bit of engineering I've seen in a long time. A friend of mine recently returned from a trip back home to Scotland and visited the wheel - she thought it was brilliant! :D
Gadget, I will probably bring Mr PrueM along to the meet as we'll be travelling together anyway. Not sure if he'll be up to coping with a bunch of mad family historians but I'll do me best to coax him! Our ancestors come from all over the shop - Fife, Moray, Aberdeen, Inverness - so I don't mind where the meet is, we will be trying to visit some of these places anyway on our trip...in fact, some of his ancestors and some of mine used to live in neighbouring parishes in Moray for a generation or two! :o
Just don't forget the ancestral Distillery! ;D *hic*
Prue

Hi Prue :)
I shall add Mr Prue to the list. I do hope we can get things sorted for this.
I think we should have a really good time.
Distillery tours are for afternoons - serious stuff in the morning(s)!

For Paul and any other Glaswegians . . . .
(Written by Will Fyffe)
I've been wi' a couple o' cronies,
One or two pals o' my ain;
We went in a hotel, and we did very well,
And then we came out once again;
Then we went into anither,
And that is the reason I'm fu';
We had six deoch-an-doruses, then sang a chorus,
Just listen, I'll sing it to you:
I belong to Glasgow,
Dear old Glasgow town;
But what's the matter wi' Glasgow,
For it's goin' roun' and roun'!
I'm only a common old working chap,
As anyone here can see,
But when I get a couple o' drinks on a Saturday,
Glasgow belongs to me!
There's nothing in keeping your money,
And saving a shilling or two;
If you've nothing to spend, then you've nothing to lend,
Why that's all the better for you;
There no harm in taking a drappie,
It ends all your trouble and strife;
It gives ye the feeling that when you get home,
You don't give a hang for the wife!

Poll 3 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=202152.new#new) - Which weekend in June suits most who wish to attend the event?
There will be a one day meet in Belfast on Saturday 28th July, 2007 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,193780.msg958434.html#msg958434).
Colette, Pentio and I look forward to meeting members who will be able to attend that event.

Hi Gadget
Count me in. ;D I have no preference as to where we meet up. My Scottish clan are from Melrose only just over the border so anywhere is fine I will drop off there on the the way there or back :-\
Cal 8)
-
And you'll be able to see your cuz :)
Welcome to the show :D
Gadget
-
Yay!
Any further thoughts re. the date? Are we still going for July/August?
Prue
-
When are you over, Prue?
Tis midgie time in the West then mind :-\
Main problem then is cost of any accommodation - and even the shortage of it in Edinburgh in August - Festival and peak tourist season.
Gadget
-
Not exactly sure yet when we will be over. It has to be some time in the northern Summer though - I know good weather is not guaranteed, but I refuse to visit the UK in wintertime ever again!!!! 8)
It might be a few months before our decision is made. Suggestions (such as avoiding midgies and festivals etc.) most welcome, to help us choose.
P :)
-
To add to the timing debate - anywhere north is really not very comfortable in July/August because of the midges. So how about May/June - the days are reasonably long, and it's outside of the school holidays so accomodation costs will not be at such a premium.
JULIAN
-
Julian
Pay attention ::) ::) ::)
The reason it can't be May/June is that the Dublin meet is in June and some people are going to both. see just a few postings above!
July and August are only midgie on the west coast near peat bogs.
Tut tut.
Gadget :)
-
Is September too far the other way?
It's just that school holidays means prices extortionate (is that how you spell it??)
Kerry

I think that Sarah and Pam were thinking more Sept/October earlier. We're also awaiting the dates of Pam's course which she won't know until January.

But Cuz we had such a lovely time hunting around a drizzly, damp, cold London Victorian Grave yard :o. How could you not like the UK in the winter ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cuz xxx

Yes I know Cuz, it was a wonderful experience that I just don't think I could ever match it, so I'm not even going to try. ;) ;) ;)

Think you maybe a litle cold if you wear that summer number you lent out to Santa for your avatar ;)

Nah, 'sorright - this year my swimmers have full length sleeves and long legs and are knitted from natural wool ;D

September/October would be a good time...it's not too cold then usually, and most of the biting beasties have died by then ;D

can you let me know what I should be swotting up on
Is it the family history thesis or the distillery paper ???
Cal 8)

Scotland - General and then more specialised :)
-
Ok I will swot up on Scotland
can you give some direction on the specialist subject...distilleries could be my specialist subject......... a bit like Mastemind ;D
-
Errr ... to save me paging through the posts, have we settled on a venue / time for the Scottish meet? ;D
-
:-\
Nope, not yet (I don't think so anyway!)
Hopefully after all the festivities are over (and the 'Sales'), we'll have more of a chance to narrow down some dates.
Anne
-
We're waiting on Pam's coursework dates, which she won't know until next month/year.
Then we have to be canny about venues and avoiding peak season because of costs.
It will probably be Central belt because of ease of travel and access to 'things' . Maybe those who want to do the Highlands could have an extended break :)
Gadget

What's 'central belt' mean? Remember, a few sassenachs might want to show up!

What's 'central belt' mean? Remember, a few sassenachs might want to show up!
It's the area surrounding the Glasgow/Edinburgh axis. Basically the bit between the Border hills and the Highlands. Been searching for a mpa to show you, but not found one yet.

Thanks Julian! I've always wanted an excuse to go to Livingston! ;D
http://www.livingstonalive.co.uk/ (http://www.livingstonalive.co.uk/)
-
And, if we're stuck for things to do when we meet up there, 'Livingston Alive' advises:
Lets start off by finding out what people do to pass their time. People can either listen to a wide selection of local and BBC radio stations, including Radio Forth, Radio Clyde, Non-Stop Beat 106 and BBC Radios 1,2,3,4 and FiveLive. They might watch TV or go to the local cinema.
Hmm - sounds like my kinda town!
-
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
the late Robin Cook was MP for Livingston.
Do you have ancestors from there Paul ;)
-
Eating Out in Livingston can {emphasis added} be an excellent experience, with a wide variety of restaurants, bars clubs and take-aways you are sure to find something to fit your needs.
From Indian Cuisine to a Chippy, from a Chinese Buffet to a Burger, Livingston can offer them all
-
So you're meeting in Livingston then :)
Just count me out :-\

I think, after the reviews, I'll give it a miss!
I can only take so much radio.

Nooooooooooo not Livingston ..please

Did you get Euros from a Glasgow cash machine, Cal - wowee :)
We do have prettier notes up here than in Eng & Wales but they are of the same value ;) ;) ;)
I'm still in favour of Glasgow for the meet. And if it last longer than a day we could easily travel by train to Edinburgh for various tours that Pam has in mind.

others for the list
Pollok House
The tenement house at 145 Bucleuch Street as mentioned earlier.
Open top bus tour of the city

the Summerlee industrial museum in Coatbridge
new lanark mills and village

Think we're homing in on Glasgow :) :) :) :)
I think it might be worth considering a 2 level meet - a short 1-2 dayer for those who can't spend more time and a longer 3-4 day visit taking in the wider area - e.g. New Lanark and the Clyde coastline - Arran, etc.

I have been and found it a bit disappointing. Most of the decor, chairs, etc seemed to me to be reproduction, and not very good repro (lots of plastic in place of glass). Jolly expensive too.
But hay ho, if you've never been, and there is the opportunity...

The Willow Tearoom is just for tourists. Not worth the effort really. The only reason to go there is to admire the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and you can see this in many places in Glasgow.

So that Julian and I can do some forward planning/organising, we need to know whether people would like a one day/two day or 1 and a half day meeting.
The main day would probably be a Saturday. This could take in all or part of the Sunday and, maybe meeting up on the Friday evening for those coming from afar. If people travel up on the Saturday, it would mean a late start and, possibly an event (The Barras or something on the Sunday am). Also we'll need to get a list of accommodation prepared.
I'm not sure if I can put up another poll on this thread so could you PM me please with your proposed times.
Thanks

I wish I could confirm to you whether or not we're coming, but I won't know for a while yet. Suffice to say we will try to fit in with whatever date you choose, depending on whether or not we can afford to fly at that time of year. It is cheaper from October onwards than during the [northern] summer months.

Hi Prue,
Oct/Nov appears to be a bit cheaper return to LHR. You can get price quote online from Qantas/SingAir etc. You lucky duck - sounds like a fun time is planned!

Thanks Gadget :D Believe me I'm trying hard to make it happen! Airfares go down from 1 Oct for about 2 months, so if we did come it would be probably no earlier, but not much later than that. In fact if we could, we would fly out on the 1st. Is that too late in the year for everyone else? I was kind of hoping to come in the late summer/early autumn (northern) but the airfares are ridiculous at that time of year...unless one wants to fly Vietnam Airways etc (I don't - well and truly done my time on dodgy airlines!)
I would love to see everyone's photos :) :) :) I just love them, love looking at the subjects as well as the object so the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned!

The one advantage of Glasgow is that we don't have to worry too much about the weather. There's masses to do and see, so, if you can't make it until Oct 1st, I'm sure we would all be happy to work around that - we must have our Prue :D
Early October is often a wonderful time to visit Scotland anyway - all those colours :)

Could someone please adjust the subject line of this thread periodically, so that it shows the likely location and date? Otherwise, one must wade through 14 pages (and counting) to get some clues.
I take it Kintyre is out of the running! I don't know what's there except some of my ancestors' remains! I want to take a look someday, as I have the names and locations of the farms they were born on (farms are still on current OS), early 1800s, but I've never heard anything interesting about the place. Public transportation seems dismal, shall need to rent a car no doubt - from Glasgow. But I can only come May through August normally, as my navigator/husband is only available then, at best, and not always.
-
Hi Loo
It wasn't decided when the thread was put up and this was the preliminary thread to discuss locations, etc. Hence the poll.
As you can see on the poll at the top of the thread, Glasgow is ahead and it seems that by popular acclaim, that the meet will take place there Sept/October this year.
I'm not sure where you found Kyntyre mentioned. I don't think we considered it. A beautiful place for a holiday, mind.
Regards
Gadget

I'm going home in mid Feb so could visit Glasgow (10 mins on train from Paisley) and suss out. Do we want city centre hotel ?
If peeps flying in to stay - to be aware airport is 8 miles outside Glasgow itself. You have to get train in from Paisley.
Let me know and I'll go on a search. people's palce a good place to visit. enbcapsulates Glasgow in one place and they do have nice tea room in Glasshouse!

Thanks Ann ;D
I think Glasgow Central/ the Bus sstation and the airport are the routes in - car is fine but parking costs are a bit much!
I think I'll just stay at the Peoples Palace all day and the rest of you can go walkies ;D ;D ;D

Yes you are right Ann
the airport is out of Glasgow centre. The train station is about 10 minutes from the airport then about another 15 mins from town centre.
Hotels ... the Ibis is cheap and cheerful (cr*p breakfast!! and no hairdryers so I have told our travel bookers NOT to put me in there again :( ), the Novatel is good and I have stayed at the Thistle near Saughihall Street that was also very good.
Not sure what to do do about booking hotels .... I may wing it a bit once we know the date and do 'laterooms' for a bargain apartment

As it is now clear that we will be meeting in GLASGOW sometime in the Autumn of 2007 (Sept/October), Julian and I have decided that it is best to lock this thread to avoid duplication.
Any other suggestions can be made on the new thread which is concerned with planning the event and any helpers, please:

Thanks everyone so far for ideas, support and humour :)
