Title: 'User Name'
Post by: Michael72. on Saturday 30 September 06 21:06 BST (UK)

Please excuse me if this is the wrong place for this question.......but can anyone tell me please how to change my 'User Name'...(the one I have to use when Logging in).....or have I missed something quite obvious somewhere... ;D ;D...

Hi Michael

You can't change your username as such without asking Trystan. You can add a name that will appear instead of your user name
If you go to your Profile and click on 'membership related settings', you'll see a space below username called Name - just add a name there and add your password, etc and click 'change profile'.

Gadget is my name but not my username ::) ::) ::)

PS I did ask for Gadget to become my username a while ago but I think something must have happened to my request or something. It's not that important though, so I'm not botheed.

I've had a look Gadget and it doesn't give me the option of changing my 'User Name'.....never mind, it's not a problem.....it was just that it is no longer relevant to me..Thanks for the input..I might just change my name that everyone sees though to 'M72'.... ;D ;D ;)

Just a bit of extra info:

If you have surnames on SIT, you'll have to let BB know because I don't think it works properly when you change your username   name.

Hi Gadget,
pleased to meet you,it's much nicer to answer to a real name, and not a bunch of initials.Oonagh.

my user name is still there,I don't have surnames on SIT,  I don't know what SIT is (sorry) ,but thanks Gadget.

SIT - Surname Interest Table .

You  should use it - add all your surnames and you can search for others  with the same names/areas.

I meant name not username - sorry - have amended my previous post.

Can I take it that the 'Username' is of no consequence then?..I thought it was part of ones Password....obviously not if you know it's 'Fling'....so what is it's actual purpose??... I thought it a bit odd a while back, when I was contacted here (using the name 'Fling') by a Gentleman wanting to repair a piccy of me!!??....Very strange..... ??? ;D

You have to use your username to log in. It also appears if someone PMs you - which confuses lots of people who PM me - who the xyz is this 'merched' person - merched pronounced with the Scottish/Welsh/German hard 'ch'  - mer ch ed  :)

Carsons/Burgess in Canada - Ontario - Bruce County and Muskokas.

Um... anything else  ???  ;D  ???

Gadget  (and I'm not really Gadget either)  :D :D :D :D

PS - I think this thread is really 'How to use Rootsweb'  ;)

I've decided to take Oonaghs advice regarding showing a 'proper' name in Posts.....so you'll all be pleased to know I have gone back to 'Michael72' (the 72 is my age).. ;D...

What I need to know now is, what do I have to report to who so that I can get some sense out of adding my Surname Interests please... ;D ;D..

Come on Gadget, you know stuff, put me on the right lines here.... ;D ;)

I'm not sure what you have already done Michael  ::)

Have you put any surnames on the SIT - you'll know if you have  ;)

If you have, as you've changed your name back  (and men say that we're fickle  :) ) I would think it's OK but better PM Bob if he's around. He's Mr SIT!

If you haven't added any surnames, then you should. At the bottom of this and every page is a link to [Your Surname Interests], click on this and you will be in another window where you will be able to add, modify or search your surnames.

Gadget - double time on Sundays  :D

Thats were I come unstuck.....I haven't managed to put any Surnames in as yet because I get this:-

Either the chatter-name or chatter_id is wrong

So who specifically do I need to contact to correct this please....

As for double time Sundays.....just send in the Bill, your worth every penny ;D ;D ;D..

Hi Oonagh.....Scroll right to the bottom of this page, there you will see 'YourSurname Interests'...click on it......when the next page opens, right at the very top you will find all the alternatives you require..Hope that helps...

When you reply, Jan, don't you get a  'merched' in the send to box? A few people have commented on it to me  ???

Still - you've got my e-mail address and know all my family history anyway  :D

And by the way, it was that thread of yours that generated my name - Gadget Applebiscuit, I remember.

Since then I'm getting more and a more like this virtual person  ;D ;D ;D

Hi All,

more info here,

Topic: Changing your RootsChat name
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,158039.0.html

When you apply to join RootsChat, you specify a user-name ('XYZ') and this name then appears in your profile.
You can change the name in your profile as often as you wish (*) and this will then appear in all your postings (new and old), but your official name will still be 'XYZ' and will appear in the "To:" field of PM's or in the Chatroom.  To change this, you have to send a PM to Trystan.

Bob

(*)
Please don't do it often, it confuses everybody  :) :)
(but it's a good idea to change to a 'nom de plume' if you have registered using your full name)

Thanks Bob for that.....but still not having any luck trying to enter names in the SIT......I either get the 'Chatter ID' thing still, or, having only typed my Surname (GILBY), County and Town into the Form, I get a message saying 'Only one name at a time'!!??.... or words to that effect.....

Someone lead me by the hand or (the ear) please... ;D ;D

Regards, Michael72.
