For over twenty years several of my family have tried to find the correct birth date of Charles Henry Baxter. Born in Leicestershire circa 1867, father Benjamin Baxter (father's name confirmed from Charles's marriage certificate) The family eventually moved to Leeds Yorkshire but it is not known if Charles Henry came with them. His place and date of death are a mystery. Said to have been Nottingham, Leicestershire and Leeds Yorkshire. I have quite a lot of information on this family but have never found the dates for birth or death, and need them to obtain certificates. Further information can be provided which may help but am reluctant to post this on the forum. I would appreciate a private message if anyone is able and willing to help. Regards Maeve

Welcome to Rootschat :)

Don't know if you have seen this one?
Birth March quarter 1867 Charles Henry Baxter Barrow 7a 134
You can order and state fathers name Benjamin and if it is not the case they will not send and charge you £4 I think? :-\
-
Hi Maeve....
Welcome to Rootschat...
What is the last date that you have for Charles ..ie census date or date of wedding...this will give us the last place to work on to pin down the years

The Barrow birth is not him.
Births Mar 1867
Baxter Charles Henry Barrow 7a 134
Deaths Jun 1867
Baxter Charles Henry 0 Barrow 7a 85
I'm afraid what information people give on their marriage certificates about fathers doesn't 'prove'/'confirm' anything unless you have further evidence from other sources such as censuses etc. that the information is correct.
The 1871 census shows a Charles Baxter born in Ratcliffe Culey Leicestershire aged 6 is this your Charles?

Valda

Ok.... he marries in 1888 to an Emma...
Fathers name given as Benjamin is the mother Sarah Ann? Do you know of siblings?

Great work Mike ;D

The only family in the frame at present remains Tazzie's
1871 census RG10 3272 folio 110
153 Syston Street Leicester St Margaret Leicestershire
Benjamin Baxter 36 St Margarets, Leicestershire, Head Married Green Grocer and Framework Knitter
Sarah Ann Baxter 35 St Margarets, Leicestershire, Wife Married
John Thos Baxter 12 St Margarets, Leicestershire, Son
Benjamin Baxter 10 St Margarets, Leicestershire, Son
Charles Baxter 5 St Margarets, Leicestershire, Son
Sarah Ann Baxter 1 St Margarets, Leicestershire, Daughter
The family appears to be missing from the 1881 census. Their son Charles is the 1866 birth registration in Leicester. A possible Benjamin Baxter junior is in Leicester in 1891 occupation - shoe rivetter. Possible marriage for Benjamin junior
Marriages Sep 1880
Baxter Benjamin Leicester 7a 249
Smith Hannah Elizabeth Leicester 7a 249
Deaths Dec 1871
Baxter Sarah Ann 36 Leicester 7a 128
Potential remarriage for Benjamin senior
Marriages Sep 1872
BAXTER Benjamin Leicester 7a 292
either
Horsley Martha Mary Leicester 7a 292
or
Hunt Mary Ann Leicester 7a 292
Perhaps Mike can find the details of these marriages to see what details of Benjamin senior's occupation/s are given and any addresses which might coincide with Charles Henry's on his marriage. That might help either eliminate the family or possibly connect it to Charles and make it worth further investigation.

Well I hav ebeen looking for this lot in 1881 and no sign of them...tried Baxter any...Baker any.....Charles b 1865/66/67....Benjamin.....
Head spinning..as Valda has found Benjamin jnr still in Leicester in 1891 and he is still there in 1901.
Charles & Emma and children still there in 1901.
Stumped now sorry..

Just to add....
The possible second marriages that Valda found.....
Martha Horsley married George Winterton found as family unit in 1881...
That would leave Mary Ann Hunt .

Getting back to Charles Henry Baxter.
I think there is a clue to his birth place
In the 1891. Census returns RG 12. / 2535. / 125. / Page. 32.
Place of birth given as
All Saints Parish Leicester.
So….. When the Records Office opens again after renovations
22nd Oct I’ll trawl the Parish Registers to see what I can come up with
According to a PM from Maeve Charles was involve with the Army
Which would explain his missing on the 1881 census (1st. Boar War 1880 ~81.)

I cannot thank you all for the help you have given me. If you do find anything else, please let me know.
Query regarding burial of Sarah Ann.
Buried in Unconsecrated Ground, Coroner's report. Correct me if I am wrong but I was always told that in bygone days, only people who commited suicide or were not baptised at birth were buried in such a manner. Unless she was a Witch, she would maybe have been burnt and buried at the crossroad. I would love to find out why she was buried in such an uncaring manner. Or, maybe they could not afford to have her buried by the Church. My guess is suicide or unexplained death, mainly due to fact of Coroners report. Regards Maeve
-
Well done Mike.....lots of information there.
As per pm I wondered about 1st Boer war could he have lied about age then or would they have accepted him.
The Charles I found in Leicester 1866 7a 171 is still looking promising.
Have sent pm to Maeve of possible death of Charles Henry...fingers crossed.

Hi its Maeve again
Regarding Army for Charles Henry Baxter. Family gossips said that he was given a choice of going to Jail or joining the army. No idea what he had done to be given this ultimatum
-
Hi just a quick post script...to Mike's marriage of Benjamin and Mary Ann Hunt nee Corbett... the witnesses marry each other in 1872 q4...still looking for all family in 1881 so using all clues....
Tazzie
-
By the nineteenth century, the Church’s attitude to the burial of suicides had begun to soften and through an Act of Parliament of 1823, such burials were permitted in graveyards, though the property of suicides was still subject to forfeiture for another fifty years.
The unconsecrated ground may just mean that Sarah Ann wasn't buried in the Anglican section of the churchyard but in the non-conformist section. If you couldn't afford the burial then you would be buried in a common grave. A great many burials in cemeteries were in common graves. You didn't have to be a pauper to end up in a common grave. Ordinary families often couldn't afford the price of a cemetery plot.
Her death could be a suicide, but in could equally be accidental or unexpected. Obtaining her death certificate would be the simplest way to find out how she died.
1716 I think was the date of the last witch executed in England (hanged not burnt). We never really got going on witch burning since the prefered method of execution was hanging. In comparison to Europe relatively few witches were executed in England.

plus 4 boarders (who may or may not have something to do with Mary Ann judging from the 1901 census)
None of this helps with finding the Baxter family in 1881.
I presume the marriage of Benjamin junior in 1880 which would give a very convenient address did not take place at St. Margarets?

Re:- Coroners Warrant.?
Not the same as Coroners Report, or Coroners Inquest.
All separate events.
Warrant. = Coroner request for evidence to be made available ( Medical reports etc.)
Inquest. = Inquiring into how & why the death happened . ( eye witnesses etc )
Report. = Summing up. And conclusions as to the death based on the above.

It would seem that we must wait until Mike can get to the Registry Office to try and track down the actual date of birth of Charles Henry Baxter. (Thanks Mike). No nearer as yet as to the place and date of death of this elusive man, but as the "A" team are working hard on the subject, I am sure that one of you will come up with some suggestions. Thanks to all of you. The Scarlet Pimpernel comes to mind. "They seek him here, they seek him there" etc.

Have you checked the quarterly General Registry online indexes
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
for Charles' death? Unless you have and he hasn't been found I'm not sure there is a mystery there about Charles' death considering the information you have which seems specific about place and approximate date.
However I do think there is a bit of a question around what happened to Benjamin. I can't see his death in the GRO indexes.

Hi Valda....
I sent Maeve one....
Charles Henry Baxter 1916 Nottingham...thats possible as his sister lived there he is age 56.....should be about 50 but 56--50 could be wrongly transcribed into the quarterlies 7b 338 q4 Nottingham.
Tazzie
-
Tazzie, there is some competition for possible Charles Henry Baxter deaths in Nottingham if the 1901 census is anything to go by.
1901 census - both living in Nottingham
Charles H Baxter single born Nottinghamshire son of Samuel and Eliza, aged 36, a stationary engine driver.
and
Charles Hy Baxter single born London son of Mary aged 40 a bricklayer

Hi Valda....
Thanks....don't know how I missed the other one I only had one come up to work on..
Will keep going..

I believe from Maeve he was a witness to a marriage in 1917 (no exact date) in Hunslet, but dead (or at least claimed dead) by his daughter on her marriage 21st April 1924 also in Hunslet, though he was believed to have died in Nottingham.
So the window is 1917 to early 1924, but bearing in mind from the 1901 census you have a doppleganger (36 on the 1901 census) who could potentially be in Nottingham and could have his death registered as Charles H. also.

Valda

To the "A" Team from Maeve
Have actual marriage certificates of the following:
1920
28 Dec 1920 St Josephs Catholic Church Hunslet Leeds.
David Dunwell age 31 Bach. Father William Dunwell
Married Jessie Ethel Baxter age 27 Spinster. Father Charles Henry Baxter.
Witnesses to marriage were:
Emma Baxter and Charles Henry Baxter
(The witness Emma Baxter (nee Gillen) could have been the wife of Charles Henry or his daughter of the same name).
No mention of father being deceased.Jessie Ethel Baxter was the daughter of Charles Henry and Emma (nee Gillen) Baxter, born in Leicester September 9th 1893
1924
21st April 1924 at St Josephs Catholic Church Hunslet Leeds
Alexander Edward Wilson age 21 Bach. Father Jim Wilson (deceased)
Married Emma Baxter age 18 Spinster. Father Charles Henry Baxter (deceased)
Witnesses to marriage were: Walter Baxter and Anne Barker
Emma was the daughter of Charles Henry and Emma (nee Gillen) Baxter.
She was born in Leicestershire on 2nd July 1905. Died 10th June 1941 in Leeds.
This is the only certificate with confirmation that father Charles Henry Baxter is deceased
1925
15th August 1925 at St Josephs Catholic Church Hunslet Leeds.
Walter Baxter age 22 Bach. Father Charles Henry Baxter
Married Annie Elizabeth Barker age 19. Spinster. Father Jonas Barker.
Witnesses to marriage were Gertrude Harrison and John William Baxter
Walter Baxter was the son of Charles Henry Baxter and Emma (nee Gillen) Baxter. Born in Leicestershire 13th August 1902
Although the latter certificate is dated one year later than the previous one of his sister Emma Baxtetr, it does not state on this certificate that the father was deceased. Could have been an oversite when filling in certificate.
-
Hi Maeve....
So our window is now 1920 -1924...
The witnesses are I take it Charles Henry b 1891
Emma b 1905
So will go through again....
The Charles Baxter in Birkenhead age 56 died 1923 is now discounted as well have him there in 1901 right age of 34.

That lest Benjamin kept to a birth date of 1837 through out Censuses.
We have 71. 91, & 1901. Returns but not 81.
just wonder if as Mother had died 1871.
The family was split up so might not even have been recorded where ever they were ?
I did try and find that Marriage (John Thomas Baxter ~ Ada Banbury 1875.)
But drew a blank ….
So….. Not St. Margaret’s Parish Church. ..Sorry.
Also trawled Death’s via Ancestry 1919. ~ 1825
But drew a blank for our Charles Thomas
Even tried my N.B.I. 1825 ~ 2000.
But only one for Charles Thomas showed up
But aged just 10 weeks in Lincolnshire.
Just wonder if Benjamin (Snr) was also involved with the Boar War as well ?
But never came back…… Hence no burial details found in England ?
MIKE.
BTW….
Spoke to a Head Librarian of the Records Office tonight
All seems to be going well should open week beginning 22nd Oct.

Seems a little old to join the army in your early 40s or at best late 30s if Benjamin joined in the middle 70s.
Even if Benjamin's birth was missed by the civil registration as it was just too early, you have his full and half siblings' births.
Births Mar 1841
Baxter Elizabeth Leicester 15 87
Births Sep 1850
Baxter William Hames Leicester 15 114
I think the lodger in 1851 was probably William Haines not Baines (though the census image is definitely Baines) and William born 1850 was his son.
Marriages Jun 1854
Baxter Hannah Leicester 7a 321
Haines William Leicester 7a 321
plus another son
Births Mar 1853
Baxter Joseph Thomas Haynes Leicester 7a 184
1861 census RG9 2290 folio 37
3 Goddards Buildings Belgrave Court Leicester St Margaret Leicestershire
William Haines 50 Hull, Yorkshire, Head Married Stocking Frame Knitter
Hannah Haines 48 Leicestershire, Wife Married
William Haines 10 Leicestershire, Son
Joseph T Haines 8 Leicestershire, Son
The possible and convenient death of Hannah's first husband James on the GRO index isn't when checked against the NBI
Deaths Mar 1841
BAXTER James Leicester 15 65
as James was aged 2 according to the NBI for St Nicholas Leicester.
So James Baxter seems to have disppeared as well (obviously a blackhole in Leicester where all male members of this family disappear into!)
Possible first marriage
JAMES BAXTER
HANNAH TEBBUT
Marriage: 25 DEC 1835 Saint Margaret, Leicester
The details of the second marriage would confirm or eliminate the first.
Despite the changes in birthplaces either this is them in 1871 or a family of dopplegangers.
1871 census RG10 3287 folio 36
60 Norfolk Street Leicester St Mary Leicestershire
Hannah Haines 56 Coleorton, Leicestershire, Head Married Laundress
George Neal 25 Narborough, Leicestershire, Nephew Farm Servant
William Haines 20 Huncote, Leicestershire, Son Groom
Thomas Haines 17 Knighton, Leicestershire, Son Warehouseman
George Neal appears to be on the Haines side of the family as he was lodging with other Haines in 1861.
I can't easily see Hannah on the 1881 census (no surprise there then) if she was still alive and the 1871 census is a correct entry and or she didn't remarry of course. This might be her burial - only possible I can find.
18th April 1888 Hannah Haynes aged 73 Welford Road Cemetery Leicester.
I can't see a candidate for this woman on the 1881 census.
Perhaps Mike can find an address for this burial or details of the Hannah marriages or baptisms of any of the children?
I haven't done a thorough search for the death of William Haines on the principle he might just be as difficult to find as James and Benjamin Baxter, or he could of course be in the same cemetery plot as Hannah! If she is the correct woman let's hope others are buried with her.

Is there an address for Benjamin Baxter junior on his marriage in 1880?

Just received this information from relative.
Children of Benjamin Baxter and Hannah Elizabeth Smith.
Married in Leicestershire 1880.
Mary Baxter born circa 1884 - no address given
Lydia Baxter born circa 1887 - no address given
Amos Benjamin Baxter born 13 Jan 1890. (Address given is 6 Pasture Lane Leicestershire
No need to persue children Mary and Lydia as they are well documented as to marriages and children. Hope this helps. Maeve
-
Soar Lane on the 1881 census goes from RG11 3178 folio 108 page 22 to folio 110 page 25. Numbers 6 & 8 Soar Lane are missing with no explanation whereas number 1 is stated as uninhabitated.
There is also Mill Yard Soar Lane at RG11 3179 folio 64 page 23
All in the All Saints area of Leicester

Benjamin junior like his brother John Thomas is relatively easy to follow on later censuses.

This is I think the marriage of Benjamin senior's second wife. A late marriage considering the evidence of the 1891 and 1901 censuses which might indicate Mary Ann was unsure of her legal husband Benjamin's whereabouts?

I've no idea whether these Corbett/Baxter/Timsons continued on as Baxters or chose to become Timsons after their mother's marriage. What is clear is that Mary Ann was no longer with Benjamin Baxter by at least no later than the year 1885.

Thank you Valda
The Baxter clan do seem to have a history of vanishing, continuing to the present day. Several recent relatives have vanished without trace. Must be an inherited family trait.
My first confirmed Baxter is :
William Baxter born circa 1781 in Castle Donnington Leicester. Spouse Ann Ball born circa 1781, no place of birth.
Family seemed to believe that the Baxter clan originated in Scotland but no trace of Scottish births ever found. I believe this to be wishful thinking as the name Baxter is of Scottish origin.
I am waiting eagerly for Mike to visit Registry office in Leicestershire when it opens in late October.

Just as a matter of interest how have you proved who James Baxter's parents were??
He was a trimmer (as in coach trimmer?)
Possibly married Hannah Tebbut in 1835 in Leicester - but not sure that's proved.
He didn't make it to the 1841 census and there seems to be no burial for him, so no known age at death, so he could have been any age on marriage.
What other evidence is there that you know of James that enables you to conclusively prove his origins?

Following is the file so far on William Baxter and spouse Ann Ball and children. This information was given to me by a contact who was also researching the family. Long time ago.
I do not have documentary evidence for William or Ann.
William Baxter born in Castle Donnington Leicester circa 1781
Spouce

Sorry Maeve but there is absolutely no proof in that information that this James Baxter
JAMES BAXTER
Christening: 16 FEB 1818 Castle Donnington, Leicester
Father: WILLIAM BAXTER
Mother: ANN
was the father of Benjamin Baxter in Leicester and at any time a coach trimmer.
The above baptism was the only baptism found in the IGI for a James Baxter in the Castle Donnington parish registers - coverage on the IGI 1813 - 1865
1851 census HO107 2087 folio 633
Barkby Leicestershire
James Baxter 30 Castle Donnington, Leicestershire, Agricultural Servant
Father William Baxter was still in Castle Donnington on the 1841 census an agricultural labourer.
James born Donnington was a widower in 1861 living in Ripley Derbyshire with his nephew William's family. Both men were labourers. William was aged 27 and born in Donnington.
Besides this Baxter household in Ripley in 1861 there was also George, who appears to be James' brother
GEORGE BAXTER
Christening: 03 JUN 1822 Castle Donnington, Leicester
Father: WILLIAM BAXTER
Mother: ANN
George was aged 41 and a grocer born Castle Donnington, living in Ripley with his wife.
'The file' appears to be more about finding a baptism for a James Baxter in Leicestershire on the IGI then a marriage for a James Baxter in Leicestershire and putting them together, with an 1881 census thrown in for another James Baxter born Kegworth simply because he also was born in Leicestershire and had a wife called Hannah (well at least in 1881 - she may have been his second wife)!
If it were that simple and we could ignore the fact that the IGI is a very incomplete index of parish registers and that if you find a baptism it must make it the right one, just because it is found and others are not - than researching family history would be much more of a doddle.
I actually think proving who Benjamin's father actually was will probably prove to be very tricky for all the reasons I gave previously.
The first step would be proving Hannah Tebbut was Benjamin's mother. The information from her second marriage will prove whether her maiden name was Tebbut. If it was you then need the full details of the 1835 marriage in the hope it provides some clues e.g. names of witnesses. The marriage took place before civil registration (therefore no quarters) so there will be no information about the couples' fathers.

Hello again to the "A Team"
This Charles Henry is certainly a mystery.

Suggested birth date of Charles Henry Baxter. Barrow 7A 134
Would you agree that it might be worth sending for this birth certificate, giving details of father and mother? At least if we get a confirmed date of birth it would give something to go on.

I would wait to see whether Mike can find the baptism next week in the other churches.

I have just been entering some of the information Mike obtained regarding Baptism dates.
I have the following in my files:
Benjamin son of Benjamin and Sarah Ann Baxter
born abt 9 Jan 1861 Leicester
John, son of Benjamin and Sarah Baxter
born abt 1859 Leicester
DID NOT HAVE IN MY FILES
Anne Eliza Baxter daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Baxter.
It would seem that Mike has found a new relative for me.
As the first two were born before baptism date of March 20th 1865 perhaps the children were baptised in one job lot, after the birth of Anne Eliza. This could possibly give a date of around 1865 for Ann Eliza. I dread to think how many more of the Baxter children there are in this family. Thanks Mike

Hi Mike
Thank you for your continuing efforts on my behalf in the search for Charles Henry Baxter. It seems we are no nearer tracing this person than we were at the start of the quest.
He really is an elusive man.
Have you any other suggestions as to any other avenues we have not tried? To all the people who have assisted in this search, have a lovely time over the festive season. Regards Maeve
-
Eight years have gone by but I have just stumbled on this discussion and it parallels a search I have been doing: a search for the ancestors of Thomas Baxter. The information known to us is that he was born in Leicester circa 1825 and following an army career settled in Canada, where he died in Hamilton, Ontario in 1901. His eldest son was named Joseph (my great-grandfather).
I have found a likely candidate in a christening of a Thomas Baxter in St Margarets on 08 February, 1826. Father: Joseph Mother Jane. There is also an army record which I have not been able to obtain of a Thomas Baxter, born 1826, St Margarets, Leicester.
Any help would be appreciated as, from a distance, I cannot seem to find a trace of Joseph and Jane.
-
The following baptisms are listed for Joseph and Jane Baxter's children, all at St Margaret:
BAXTER MARY 1817 04-May
BAXTER EDWARD 1823 21-Sep
BAXTER THOMAS 1826 08-Feb
BAXTER ELIZABETH MARY 1829 18-Sep
BAXTER AGNES 1834 19-Feb
The 1841 census has this family at Belgrave Gate, St Margarets:
Joseph Baxter age 50 wire worker
Jane Baxter age 50
John age 20 wood turner
Edward age 15 polisher
Thomas age 10 polisher
Agnes age 7 (I think it says she's a grocer but I suspect this is incorrect! lol)
All born in county.
I think they are at 127 Belgrave Gate in 1851 and that gives a bit more info about Joseph and Jane:
(mistranscribed on Ancestry as Baxton)
Joseph Baxter age 60, head, wire worker, born Cossington, Leicestershire
Jane Baxter age 62, wife, born Rothley, Leicestershire
Ann Baxter, age 18, daughter, unmarried, dressmaker, b St Margarets
-
However, be aware that there was also a Thomas Baxter baptised in ST Margarets on 25 June 1828, parents William and Sarah --
you need some sort of documentation with his father's name on. Do you have a marriage cert?
-
Do you know when your Thomas joined the army? I can see that he was in the army in the 1851 census.
There is a newspaper report from March 1843 in which his brother Edward was sentenced to transportation for life; John and Thomas were both called as witnesses at Edward's trial so that places him still in Leic at that time. A Thomas Baxter, labourer of Leic was indicted in 1845 for going out with dogs to catch game - don't know if this is the same Thomas or not.
Then in June 1850 "A young man named Thomas Baxter, a native of Leicester" was arrested in Loughborough - headline "Apprehension of a deserter" (from the Royal Foot Artillery).
ADDED: I've got his army discharge papers! (on FindMyPast). Nothing about his family background but it does say that his trade is wire worker --- like his presumed father Joseph ---
-
Thank you all, for such a quick response. Unfortunately all I have at the moment are his obituary from the Hamilton Evening Times, and some military citation notes for his action in the Fenian Raids campaign of 1866. His son was named Joseph E. Baxter. The obituary reads as follows: Thursday May 14 19?? 'A Veteran Gone Sergt. Thomas Baxter's long illness ended today.
Hamilton has lost another old resident in the person of Segt. Thomas Baxter, who passed away last night after a long illness at his son's home, No 120 Emerald St. North. The deceased gentleman was born in Leicestershire, England in January 1825. He served in the artillery, being a sergeant in the 4th Brigade, Royal Artillery and being seven years in South Africa seeing active service in the Kaffir War. After coming to Canada he settled in Montreal, subsequently removing to St. Catherines and later Hamilton. He was on duty at the time of the Fenian Raids and was stationed in Cornwall.
He wore as evidence of service for his country, the South African Kaffir war medals and the Fenian Raid medal.
He leaves a wife and three children, two daughters and a son'
Perhaps his military records in the UK can lead us to the right Thomas.
-
I can't see any military records from the UK and as far as I know it's not usual to find them from this era.
His discharge papers give a lot of info regarding his service, backed by his obituary; here are some points:
Montreal 20 Oct 1868; no 257 Sergeant Thomas Baxter of 4 Brigade R (?). artillery regiment
Attested 20 June 1845 age 19 yrs 6 months; deserted 21 June 1848; rejoined 21 June 1850.
Born St Margaret, Leicester; trade wireworker.
Total service 21 years, including 7 years, 2 months Cape of Good Hope, and 7 years 3 months Canada. Discharged at his own request.
Conduct v good, although court martialled 3 times in total.
Worked his way up the ranks, eventually promoted to Sgt on 2 Sept 1864.
Physical description at time of discharge: Height 5' 8+1/2 inches (pretty tall for his generation!); fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair
Intended place of residence Toronto.
So we have an echo of his putative father's trade (wireworker) and a dob of the end of 1825/beginning of 1826 (which ties with the baptism date).
-
Thanks Annie,
You definitely have given me more information that correlates well with what I have. I have just found his census record for 1901 which gives an exact birth date of 28 January 1826, which ties in well with a christening in February 1826. That further reinforces the link to Joseph and Jane Baxter.
Interesting to see a courtmartial on three occasions!
Do we have any more on Joseph and Jane's marriage?
-
Familysearch gives this possibility:
Joseph Baxter
Jane Barsby
31 Dec 1810
Rothley, Leicestershire
Indexing Project (Batch) Number M09628-1
System Origin England-ODM
GS Film number 592602
I note that Jane came from Rothley; also that their oldest son in 1841, John, is not listed in the St Margaret's baptisms so the family may well have moved into the town after his birth.
-
Barsby is noted as a village in the manor of Rothley. Is it possible that it is her birthplace and not her family name?
-
Lots of people carry a surname which indicates the village from which their ancestors came ---
-
This is rather exciting. I am trying to prepare a history of my father's family for his 95th birthday in July. We had very little information on his mother's (Baxter) family.
I guess my next search would be for Joseph's parents in Cossington. It gets a little more difficult without the census as they would probably be in their 70's by 1841.
-
In the Gentleman's Magazine,June 10, 1845, there is an obituary for a Richard Baxter, aged 73, in Cossington, formerly of Wisbeach, Cambridgeshire. (Although he is noted as an esq., unlikely for our family at that point).
There is also an extract from the Baptist Chapel at Rothley of:
'1831
Struggling financially and still exclusions for drunkenness, 'bad company',swearing, disorderly conduct, fighting, Joseph Baxter accused of striking his wife.'
-
Familysearch has NO Cossington baptisms form the 18th century - I wonder if the parish records were damaged, or perhaps there was no active church in the village?
If I were you, I'd post a new thread on the main Leic board and see if anyone has any info specific to Cossington and Rothley.
-
btw, if Richard did turn out to be of interest, his will is available for download (for a small sum) from National Archives
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=cossington+%2B+baxter
-
Thank you, Annie, for your help and direction. I am new to the forum and a bit slow in learning correct procedures.
-
Hi all
Just been reading through this thread. I have baxters in my family tree. I have just looked at the john Baxter I have, born about 1820. He was married to Sarah Shipley. On the 1881 census he is listed as wire worker. I'll have to do some more research this afternoon
-
The Gazette for 1846 also places Joseph as a wireworker at 127 Belgrave Gate and two Thomas's in other trades, probably not mine as he was already enlisted in the army. I also see six Barsby's in trade on the same page as the Baxters. There are only two John Baxters, Mvann, a baker and a butcher.
https://books.google.fr/books?id=c2MRAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA124&dq=Barsby+Baxter&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj6gKrCyPDMAhVKOBQKHb69BnQQ6AEIHTAA#v=onepage&q=Barsby%20Baxter&f=false

Hi
I have looked at the gazette before, but was looking for hartshorn family at the time.
On the 1881 census, he was living in churchgate.
My only interest in the baxters is because my 2gtgrandad, Israel coltman was married to Jane Baxter, John's daughter
