Title: Help!
Post by: kez_s on Wednesday 11 October 06 09:03 BST (UK)
Hi

I don't know if anyone can help me? Perhaps I am doing something wrong  ::) I am trying to find some ancestors on the Scottish census to no avail.

The details are as follows:

Donald Stewart married to Grace Stewart, don't have many details on them apart that they would have been born 1850's ish, they have a son Frank Stewart B 1870 in Towie, Aberdeenshire, he married Kate McArthur or Catherine they had James b 1894 in Kintore, Aberdeenshire and they also had another son Alexander born Nov 1901 (too late for census) and possible another son William Stewart born 1898 again in the Aberdeenshire area.

Both Donald and Frank were Tinsmith's.

I've done numerous searches on Scotlands people but I can't find any of them at any time - strange.  ???

Any help would be appreciated.  ;D

Kind regards

Kirsten

This family are slightly older than you mention but the names do appear to "fit"

Living in Bakiehow Road Tent,Meldrum,Aberdeenshire in the 1881 census we have

Donald STEWART   aged 56, Tinsmith born in Crathie Aberdeen
his wife
Grace STEWART   also aged 56    born in Larig, Ross and Cromarty
occupation given as hawker
Children
John STEWART, age 23    born in Forgue, occupation given as Tinsmith
(John appears to be married to Rachel aged 20 born in Forgue .... she is listed as Sons Wife, occupation Hawker)

Alexander STEWART aged 17,born Forgue, occupation Tinsmith
Allan STEWART   aged 15 born Huntly ,unemployed
Francis STEWART,aged 10 born Towie, Aberdeenshire listed as unemployed

Hi Kirsten

In the 1901, I've found a Francis Stewart, aged 28, b. New Deer, in Glenmuick. He is a tinsmith but his wife is Elizabeth (Cameron, I think) and he has a son John, aged 3.  However, I expect you've found this family  :(

Did they move around at all? It might be that they just never got to be enumerated.

wow - thanks!

Donald and Grace are older than I guessed, I based it on Frank's age, was this in 1881?

I have the birth entry for Frank as Frank not Francis hence not being able to find it. Would a birth entry on Scotlands people be incorrect? I could understand it if he was registered as Francis and called Frank, but it seems strange to have it the other way around.

Hi Gadget

Thanks for your help!

They did move around but it appears mainly in the Aberdeenshire area. I haven't come across the names you mention as I was looking for Frank not Francis, which is how his name appears in the birth registration on Scotlands people. So I am bit more confused.

There are a number of names which are interchangeable ... some we recognise today Frank/Francis others we consider as seperate names Jane/Jean/Janet and then there's the good old human factor .... enumerator is told frank but was brought up to consider it a shortened form of Francis or the transcriber was in that role.

PS yes, the census entry shown was found in the 1881 census

PPS for Grace you might want to look for Grizel its other form.

Hi Kirsten

From IGI, these are the birth entries for some of Frank's brothers (surname down as Stuart) which tie up with the Census info for 1881 from Falkryn:

1. DONALD STUART  Birth: 04 AUG 1860 Cairnie By Huntly, Aberdeen, Scotland
2. ALLAN STUART Birth: 25 DEC 1865 Huntly, Aberdeen, Scotland
3. ALEXANDER STUART Birth: JAN 1863 Forgue, Aberdeen, Scotland
4. JOHN STUART Birth: 11 JUL 1857 Forgue, Aberdeen, Scotland

Regards.

Hi Kirsten
Your Stewarts are Travellers, you'll probably find that your Whytes are too....welcome to confusion  :)

I have a Matilda Stewart born about 1810 but there are no records for her until she has my 3x g/grandfather in 1829-ish!!
I also have a Betsy Whyte, possibly born about 1840-50.

They did tend to marry into the same group of family names though.
Best of luck, Sylvia  :)

Thanks Monica!

At last I'm starting to break down who is who!

Ladybird; we have spoken before! My family are indeed travellers and include Whyte both my great grandmothers were Whytes. My family are also Kelbie which too married greatly into the Stewart line or vice versa, so its very confusing for me finding out that my relatives are not only related once but very often twice!

My great grandfather is also my great, great Uncle! Oh what fun!!

Hence I have some real problems with Scotlands people guessing who is who and having no idea where they are living or what name they are using!

No probs ladybird!!!!  ;D

Still having no luck on Census for any years for any of them. Found a couple of baptisms for Alexander B 1901 and his birth, found baptism for William 1898 but no birth or census info and can't find any of the others on the census - strange.

Just a thought but have you tried the England census for them?
Northumberland seemed to be quite a poplular place.

Hello Ladies
I came across this message while nosing around the site. My Great Grandmother was a  Betsy Whyte b1879
two of her sisters married Stewarts and another a Kelbie. My family had a travelling background as well and l believe we have the same Duncan and Grace Stewart in the tree as well.
Do you think we have the same people ?
Regards
Debbie

Hi Debbie

It sounds like def have some connections and I believe all Kelbies are related! My maternal grandmother was a Kelbie and my maternal grandfather a Stewart. Grace Stewart is my 3 x Gt Grandmother. I also have White's/Whyte's on both side of my family tree but it's an avenue I've never been able to explore as I have no info on my Gt Grandmothers (two of them were White/Whyte's.  Without going into it with more detail it's hard to find out where it's connected.
