Title: West Edalston?
Post by: Adrian Smith on Monday 23 October 06 11:01 BST (UK)
Hi All,

I am trying to find some details of Mary Ann Smith.  The 1861 census has her listed as being born in West Edalston, Wiltshire

Smith    Mary Ann    50    Wife    ?    West Edalston, Wiltshire    Sladbrook, Westbury    RG9/1301/F?

The trouble is I cannot find this place on any map?

Any ideas?

Kind regards,

Adrian.

Hi Adrian,

Looking at the 1861 image, I think the first letter is a 'C'
The place looks like 'Caalston' to me.
(in 1851, it's Bratton)

The closest I can see on genuki
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WIL/indexpars.html
is Calstone Wellington

Hi Adrian, I must admit I've not heard of it either, could it be West Lavington?   I'll have a look to see if I can find her on my copy of the 1851 and get back to you in a few days.
Cheers Dave

Bratton is a chapelry in the parish of Westbury, whereas West Calstone is close to Calne - quite a few miles from Westbury.

I just looked her up on the 1851 census where she is listed as being born in Bratton.

Thanks all,

A.

Looking at Bratton on magic.gov.uk I see that there is a village called Coulston just up the road - perhaps this was mis-transcribed as Edalston?
