Title: Sherret/Daveney
Post by: BoBo on Wednesday 25 October 06 21:00 BST (UK)
I am in search of further information about James Sherret who married Jane Daveney.  Both born in 1777/76 in Arbuthnolt, Kincardineshire.  I know they had one child called William Sherret born 1803 but I am sure they had more.

Any information much appreciated.

good evening my friend, i have taken up your post and have spent the past hour and a bit checking, cross referencing ect

i cannot find a marriage for james to jane????

anyway i will start here

1841 census; johnshaven district 6, benholm

james...age 66...day labourer
elspeth...age 67
margaret...age 20...flax spinner
james...age 5...lodger

confused? so was i, until i found this

1797, benholm- marriage of james to elspeth burness

talking about marriages, what about this one?

james to mary beattie in arbuthnot, 1740 (father of your james maybe?)

back to the census

1851 census; middle street, johnshaven,

james...head...age 74...ag labourer...born arbuthnot
helen...dau...age 36...born johnshaven

it seems that sherret is a big family name in that area and most male sherret's are farmer's or ag labourer's.

i would look at this as part of your family

1841 census; mains of kair, arbuthnot

george...age 25...ag labourer
jane...age 25

on the 1851 census, there is a james born 1804 benholm

james..house 5, cairnton cottages, fordoun

the only reference i can find to your william born 1803 is that of a son of hugh!!

plenty for you to digest over the next few weeks my friend

Hi Joe
Many thanks for your response and for spending time to research this for me.

Yes you are right, I do have a fair bit to digest and it will take me a while to sort it out, however you have hit the nail on the head by stating that there were a great number of Sherrett's scattered all around this area.  It could well be that I have my information wrong and that James did marry Elspeth Burness not Jane Daveney however at the moment I have to delve a little more to get to the bottom of this!

Thanks again

BoBo

I have some information on the children of James Sherret and Jane Daveny (or in one case, Margaret Daveney). I am happy to share. The children are Robert, William, John, and Christian - born between 1792 and 1804, all in Fetteresso. I also have a James being born in 1790 to James Sherret and Margaret Daveny, but that could be an error. James Senior, Jane Daveney's spouse, is living with John and Christian in Monduff, Kincardine in the 1841 census. Let me know if this helps you and perhaps we can share some more info. Cheers, Geoff.

Bobo, I know this is an old post and maybe you are now sorted but just in case. A couple of days ago I was poking around at SP looking for old dead Sh*r*t folks. Anyways in my lists there's a James Sheret (MMS Davany) died age 80 in 1868 and a Robert Sherett  (MMS Davinie) died age 73 in 1866 the first at Cookney the second at Fordoun.
