Title: Beech Farm, Scagglethorpe, near Malton
Post by: gazania on Monday 30 October 06 02:17 GMT (UK)
I would like any information on Beech Farm (or similar name  eg The Beeches) and homestead in the hamlet of Scagglethorpe, which is in the parish of Settrington, & which is not far from Malton.  Does it still exist?  Is the house still standing?  Any suggestions for me to search are welcome.

My family, Cundill/Cundith, occupied the farm for at least 200 years with my branch leaving in 1800.  Apparently the farm was still in the family until it was sold about the 1950s when the last occupants, both bachelors (Cundill) willed the proceeds to the local chapel.

I have researched the parish registers, censuses and wills. I live in Australia and unable to make a trip, these days.   Thank you. Gazania

Hi Gazania,

Maybe not a lot of help but if you search www.streetmap.co.uk for Scagglethorpe you will see something called Five Beeches.

Bee :)

Thanks very much, Bee.  That is new to me.  I'll compare the new map with the old ones which are available on the 'net and look at the censuses for the same periods.  Thank you, Gazania

Thanks Bee and Treetotal for your suggestions.  I have had some good news.  The farm is called Beech Tree Farm and is still in existence and is clearly shown on a modern ordinance map which a kind person in Scagglethorpe emailed me.  In Kelly's directory for 1935, the farm is greater than 150 acres and the farmers were George and Arthur Cundill.  Thank you Gazania

Hello

My father, a farmer, knew George Cundill(Cundall) in Scagglethorpe way back in the 1950s.  I,too, visited the farm.

Hi Highfields,

My email was returned.  So you will have to post twice more, even if it is saying hello, before we can use the personal email system.  Still looking forward to hearing from you.  Gazania

Hello.

A reply so as to meet the requirements of the site(which I should have taken more notice of).

I shall have to ask my eldest sibling about George(and John) as he had more to do with them than I did.  Nonetheless, I might be able to pass on some personal details.  I. too, can seek info. from someone else in the family who might have an even clearer memory.

Bye, Highfields.

Hi Highfields,

Please post one more time. Then I can leave a personal message for you & my contact details. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.  I have just had breakfast of hot porridge - the first cold morning of winter.  The sun is shining and the skies are clear & blue.  Shall be a lovely day.  Bye, Gazania

Your chilly mornings are not quite ours!  And we've had the 'chills' for months.  But all is relative!

(as you will know, blue skies are not our speciality).

Bye, talk again.  Highfields

Hi
My maiden name was Cundill and I lived at Beech Tree Farm as a child in the 1950s. The brothers who farmed were George Arthur and Robert (I called them Uncle George and Uncle Robert - they were in fact my grandfather's cousins) and they had a brother Alfred who farmed at Rillington. They had a sister Annie? Taylor who also lived in Scagglethorpe at one of the other farms they owned - I think they had 3, but probably only small ones. The first record of Cundills in Scagglethorpe is a marriage at Settrington in 1638. Scagglethorpe has no church and BMDs are all at Settrington. Uncle George said that Cundills had been at Beech Tree since before the Civil War which started in 1642 (I think), so this is probably when they moved there. Before this there are records of Cundills at Rillingtonand Winteringham, both local villages.

Hi Jackie,

Great to hear your story. My branch left in the 1800s and went to Thorne then to OZ and the USA. Our branch kept the Cundith spelling or they had a lisp. You will have to make two more posts before we can make contact by personal messages.  Looking forward to hearing from you, Gazania
