Post by: annapanna on Sunday 05 November 06 20:12 GMT (UK)
Hi
Trying to find out about John Dixon at  the Dumbarton Glassworks
Jacob had a lot of wife's/mistresses
Trying to find out what happened to two of them
Ann Fenton with whom he had a daughter Mary Dixon All we know is she was born in Dumbarton
Mary Corwal had a son called George. and again not sure about birthdates  but again born in Dumbarton.
Other wife's/mistresses was
catherine Ann McCauley (seen different spellings on surname) married 1791
and Mary Ann McCully
Mostly we are looking to what happened to Ann and Mary and the children as we are not able to find out anything
So any one maybe got a hint on where we can start to look
Thanks
Anna

I am not sure if I can help, but I have done research on John Macaulay, the Town Clerk of Levengrove who was related to the Dixon family.  The Macaulays seems to be equally as mysterious...Paul

Sorry for my late reply but I have been away on vacation.  I am not related to the Dixons.  My main area of research concerns the Macaulay family and their relations, thus my Dixon research...Paul

I have Dixon ancestors ... but it seems they're in Middlesex - although I haven't yet been able to find the birthplace of the James Dixon (b. abt 1816) who's in my tree  :-\

Edited: where was my brain when I typed this??  Suspected birthdate for James Dixon is actually around 1790!

I have just come in on this thread.
I have discovered that Jacob Dixon senior was my 4xgreat grandfather.  He died in Sept 1831, just one day AFTER his eldest son Jacob Dixon, who is the subject of your enquiry.
I have found a court case settling the will of Jacob senior.
Apparently Jacob junior's brothers and sisters contested the idea that Jacob junior's family by Jean Brown with whom he had had a relationship, and children, but had also married prior to his death.
I can point you at the online report of the proceedings. The link is
http://books.google.com/books?id=-aoDAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA939&lpg=PA939&dq=%22Rev.+William+Jaffray%22&source=web&ots=eF2-7HfNbi&sig=FRD67FdrA0O5WgzVdkZEtfRrGo0&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=2&ct=result
My ancestor is Jaffray who married Elizabeth Dixon
.
By the way the judges allowed the children of Jacob Junior to inherit, leaving the rest of the children of Jacob senior to inherit their shares as stated in the will - but the bulk of the fortune (Dumbarton Glass I believe) went to Jacob junior's descendants.

Hi Paul/Pablo,

I have been reading your post regarding the Mcauley and Dixon info and picked up people who I believe are my relatives. You had the following,

2. Jean Macaulay, b. 1775 m. possibly Alexander Carrick and had,
3. John Macaulay Carrick, b. 1804
3. Isabella Carrick, b. 1807
3. Elizabeth Carrick, b. 1809
3. Jane Jamina Carrick, b. 1811
3. Fanny Carrick, b. 1815

I have been looking for a John Carrick who lived in Dublin but was born in Scotland. All his family were from Dumbartonshire or Stirling. I believe his father was Alexander Carrick born in 1775. I have a will from his cousin Elizabeth Denny where she leaves money to her first cousin Isabella Carrick in Dublin and also to Jane Carrick in Dublin.  I know John Carrick had a business at 5 mary's abbey Dublin and lived in Donnycarney and he had at least children Andrew and Jane. Jane is my gg grandmother and I know she married William Boyd 1851 in Drumcondra and they had a number of children. I am looking to find any further information which will help me prove John Macauley Carrick is my ggg grandfather and also info on Jane and in particular William Boyd who all I know is his father is David Boyd a merchant.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.
babzi.

Hi
Just joined this forum and saw your post re Jacob Dixon.  Wondered if you were any further on since this post.  My main interest is in finding out more about Jean/Jane Dixon widow of Jacob Dixon junior.  Her son Anthony was my grandmother's grandfather and I remember her talking of Grandpa Tony.  Jane and her family appear to have come out finatially well after all the appeals re the will, however their circumstances after 1831 suggest otherwise.  Any information you have would be much appreciated.

Very interested to read that the children of Jacob Dixon and Jean Brown received the bulk of the inheritance of their grandfather.  Wasn't it usual in Scottish Law for the eldest son to inherit from his father?  My understanding was that the continuing court cases took all the money and there was nothing left.   Thank you for leaving the link to the result but unfortunately I cannot get it large enough to read.
