NANKIVELL is a Devon surname with umpteen variants, e.g.  A-KIVEL, CIVEL, KIVEL, NEKIVELL, PEN-KIVELL.  This makes searching difficult and also means you cannot be sure you have found the right person unless you look through all the variant spellings as well.

I know how difficult this is because I have found 96 variant spellings of the surname I am interested in (WINDEATT).  BUT I have to admit that I think searching NANKIVELL would be even worse - given the WINDEATT example, I suspect there will be well over one hundred spelling variants of NANKIVEL!

If you were not already aware of these disparate spellings then I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news.   For the source of this information =, see reference (note 4):

Look at Note 4.

I am looking for a John Nankivill Osborne son of Margaret Osborne of Mary Tavy. THey livedin the mining district in Blackdown and John and his wife Jane Drake are found with their family on teh 1851 census.

However with the poor quality 1841 census I am unable to locate John on the 1841. He would have married Jane by that time as the first child was born abt 1830 - Betsy.

If anyone has any osborne and Nankivill connections in Mary Tavy I woudl be very grateful.

I am assuming Margaret was the Nankivill and she married Mr Osborne but no trace so far.

John Nankivell OSBORNE was the illegitimate son of miner John NANKIVELL and Margaret OSBORNE.  He was a witness to his sister’s wedding in 1837 .  His sister was as follows:
Mary OSBORNE the illegitimate daughter of miner John NANKIVELL and Margaret OSBORNE was born in 1810 or 1811 in Marytavy parish, Devon.    She lived in Blackdown in the parish of Marytavy.   Mary was married on 5 August 1837 by banns at Marytavy parish church to copper miner Walter BARTLE of Blackdown, the son of miner Walter BARTLE Senior.  He had been born in Marytavy in about 1809 or 1810.  Walter signed his name (badly) and Mary OSBORNE made her mark.  Witnesses were George TRINNEATH and her brother John Nankivell OSBORNE who made his mark.
In 1851 when the census was taken, Walter and Mary BARTLE, aged 41 and 40 respectively, were living in Blackdown with their four children, Betsy, William, Jonathan and Maryann BARTLE, all born in Marytavy parish.

John Nankivell Osborne was baptised at Mary Tavy 28 Sep 1806, illegitimate son of Margaret OSBORNE.
We have a new OPC for Peter Tavy & Mary Tavy, although she will not be available to do free look-ups until after August 9th. You can check the website at http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/MaryTavy/index.html and scroll down to genealogy for the link after that time.

Hi treemad, I am related through Jonathan mentioned in jwood's post. Jonathan moved to New Zealand where I am from.

I am not sure I can add much more going back than jwood. Mary Osborne, John's sister, was christened in Ashwater, Devon 20 July 1810. Walter and Mary moved to Gunnislake, Calstock between 1851 and 1861 where they are buried.

How are you linked?

Hi clair85,
I don't know if the 'Nankivells' went to NZ. Jonathan Bartle's grandfather was a Nankivell, but not Jonathan himself. He went to NZ with wife and 1 child. He did not run a company.  He was copper miner in U.K. and a painter in N.Z.

A Thomas Nacivle (Nankivell) listed at Blackdown died on the 12th Dec. 1849, aged 61, and was buried on the 15th Dec. Cost £1.10s.0d. By Rev. Anthony Buller. Coffin made by undertaker Thomas Daw(e).

I am interested in any information relating to miners of Mary Tavy and district, and hold a large database on its mines and miners. I would appreciate any information... many thanks in anticipation of your response.

Kindest regards Tin Miner

Tin miner Thomas Nankivell is my ggg grandfather and I am currently writing a book on his family, any details you could share on Thomas and his sons Robert, Thomas, William, Francis, and John in the mines of Mary Tavy 1811/50 period would be appreciated. I have extensive information on the boys when they left England which I can share with you if you require same. Do you know where Thomas is buried?

Hi Tin Miner,
I would be  interested in anything 'Bartle', 'Barkle' from the mines in Mary Tavy.
Jonathan Bartle's father Walter Bartle was a miner and died 1840 in Blackdown, but I do not know where he is buried.
Jonathan's uncle, Charles Kneebone Bartle, was a mine agent in Mary Tavy. He was christened Mary Tavy 1819. The 'Kneebone' is unusual and is not a family name that we can find. Do you know anything about that from your research?

Hi,
I have just come across this sequence of postings and have Mary Tavy, John Osborne links so would be very interested to know the source of jwood's information.
I am descended from the John Nankivell Osborne mentioned.  I had found out that his mother was Margaret Osborne and that there was no father mentioned in the records.  The existence of John Nankivell, the father, was therefore quite a revelation as was the existence of a sister to John Nankivell Osborne.
Many thanks.

The John Nankivill Osburn (son's birth certificate spelling) I mentioned (my great great grandfather) was born in approx 1807 (he was 44 in the 1851 census).

As the posting by jwood said that he was the illegitimate son of John Nankivell, it is possible that the William Nankivell, born in 1803, mentioned in barryd's posting, was also the son of John Nankivell or at least closely related.

I need to do some more digging!

Hi haylingozzy,
I am descended though Mary Osborne, John Nankivell Osborne's (JNO) sister I believe. In the IGI (her christening) her mother is Peggy Osbourn, rather than Margaret, and has no father listed. JNO is a witness at her wedding in 1837 where her father is given as John Nankivell. I believe that JNO married Jane Drabe in 1829 and I think she is found widowed in Calstock in 1861 with children Betsey, James, Henery and Mary. This is the same town that his sister Mary moved to. Am I on the right track?

Hi all

I am looking for the parents of Nancy Nankivel born 16 April 1826 as far as I am aware her parents were John Nankivel and Mary but have no further information on them. Nancy went on to marry James Tredinick Gerry in 1846 in Tavistock.

Its possible that Nancy has a brother called Thomas born 27/2/1832 and a sister called Grace born 26/5/1829.

Any help gratefully received

Judy

I can find no Bartles that moved to NZ, I know he was the s/o Walter and Mary Osborne, and g/son of John Nankivell, but there is no mention of Jonathon in the NZ registers. Any more information?
Cheers

Hello ,

I am descended from Charles Kneebone of Mary Tavy. I don't think the Kneebones are a relation of yours. Apparently it was not uncommon to call children after their godfather which may explain the name Kneebone being used as a middle name.
