Good morning one & all,
This is a long shot but I'm hoping someone out there may be able to help me with a brick wall. Here's the family I'm struggling with, info from the 1841;
Palm Street, Stelling, Kent
William WINTER age 40 ag Lab all yes of this County
Mary .. .. 42
Eliza .. .. 15
William .. .. 13
George .. .. 12
George is my G x 2 Grandfather. I've never been able to find a baptism for him. On later census returns, he declares he was born in Greenwich, but as yet, I've not found any evidence to support this.
So, if anyone has access to the Stelling PR's, I'd be very grateful if you could have a peek & see if George's baptism is there. If William & Mary's marriage is there too, even better. I've also 'lost' William & Mary after 1841, so there maybe some burials for them.
If anyone has a connection to this line, please contact me, I'd love to hear from you.
Many thanks...fingers crossed!!
Debbie

Hi,
Apologies for not replying sooner. I'm stuck with this family as I'm not sure of their origins. I have George in Greenwich/Rotherhithe from 1851. His father was William as per his marriage certificate, but I cannot find George on the 1841 apart from this possible family.

Hi Debbie
I don't know how you are progressing with this but I would say from looking at the family in the 1841 census at Stelling that they were much more likely to be MINTER than WINTER. Furthermore, Greenwich to a small village like Stelling doesn't really make much sense - not impossible of course but I would say more likely not than likely so.
Do you have a marriage certificate for your George WINTER? If so, when/where/fathers name & occupation/names of witnesses - do they help?

Thanks for your thoughts.
I've been grasping at straws on this one for years.
I have a marriage cert for George from 1862 to Victoria Matilda Russell in Rotherhithe. He was a widower - very helpful - and his father William Winter was a Park keeper.
I have basically resigned myself to not getting back to George's birth. There are several on the IGI that could be him but I'd be guessing.
I THINK I found my George on the 1851. Single, place of birth Greenwich. I just checked my records... it's not good. I have a new laptop and the 1851 image isn't on here. It'll be on my old pc, in the loft!! I hadn't printed it out either.
Family insist George was Irish. I have never found anything to prove or disprove this though. Maybe I never will.
Sorry I'm not too helpful!
