My great great grandparents were Joseph Ockendon b 1796 Great Burstead M Ruth Garpin b 1807 Burnham on Crouch, married 1821 at Rayleigh. I have come to a brick wall and can get no further back. Can anyone help me please ? Is anyone else researching the same family ?
My gt grandparents were John Ockendon M Eliza White......my grandparents were George Arthur Ockendon M Alice Sophia Lodge.
Thank you

hmmm, never noticed before - LDS/IGI registers for Great Burstead are only 1559-1654 .... I think you will have to visit the Archives Office in Chelmsford or Colchester - and no records transcribed for Burnaham it seems ..

(Little Burstead is 1681-1812 -- but sadly no Ockendons)

Thank you ScRoppers, I live in County Durham so a long way away from Essex, I'm hoping someone else researching my family still lives down that way.

If you dont find anybody - I think the Essex folks offer a research service - they should be able to find your man in the untranscribed Registers for a bit less than a Kings Ransom !
The Bursteads and Billericay are interesting places ....
Hope this helps and you're most welcome .....

Hi,
my 3rd great grandmother was Louisa Ockenden (1823-1873) who married into the Hymas family in Rayleigh from where I descend (John Hymas 1816-1882ish). She was the eldest daughter of Joseph/Ruth, and would be the brother to your John.
I've got some info on the Ockendon line from the census and have seem some refs to Ackindon to make things more complicated!
I've only just found out the Garpin name tie-in - I see that there are deaths of Robert and Elizabeth Garpin registered in the 1842/43 BMD index for Maldon which would fit well - have you seen them - parents or brother/sister? I also note a few refs to Garpen, though does seem to be a relatively unusual name.
I'd be interested in anything going back down this line, regards, Jon.

Hi Jon
I'd be interested in any info you have on the Ockenden family. My g-grandmother was a Maude Gertrude Hymas who was a grand-daughter of John Hymas & Louisa Ockendon

Thank you but I've got loads more now than when I posted my request. It was really kind of you to offer and if anything comes up I don't have I'll contact you.
I hope you enjoy living in Essex, I haven't been there since I was young but I liked it very much.

Hi, I am descended from the same line and I am wondering if you have got any farther back than Josiah Ockendon (b 1725) and his wife Dorothy Green ( b 1732)? I am really stuck. I am also looking for the parents of Alice Chapman (1758-1824) and William Garpin (1785-1812)
Any information???
THhanks

Hi Krista, I will look out my Ockendon files and get back to you as asap x

Just refreshing my memory as I haven't done much more family tree for a while, sorry I came to a dead end with Josiah Ockendon and Dorothy Green, hoping to get back to it so will let you know if I can get any further back.
The Garpins are very elusive too, I have William Garpin b1780 as Ruth Garpin's father but I don't even have Alice Chapman, so you have a bit more than me there. He was my great great great grandfather.
I've some copies of old documents about Ruth's brother Robert , who died in the workhouse, quite interesting. Will PM you my eaddress.
-
Thanks I would love to see that. I have Lucy Hart ( 1787-1864) as Ruth Garpin's mother and Alice Chapman (1758-1824) as Joseph Ockendon's mother ( b. 1796) but that is second hand information and I would have to confirm. I will let you know if I have an luck further back.

Alice Chapman was a widow when she married Joseph Ockendon and I've so far been unable to find her first marriage to find her maiden name and then her parents.
I've quite a few copies of old Ockendon documents I can share with you if you email me your eaddress

Essex archives are now online, google Essex Records Office, go to right hand side click on Essex ancestors, the charge is £5-00 for 24 hours and for that you get as many views as you like of original documents. There are other higher prices for week/month/6 months/year and they are always continuous viewing of original documents.
