Hi there Joe,
This is great stuff you've managed to dig up!
Yes, i was a bit cheeky, expecting info on all my family branches wasn't I?  But thank you for giving it a go for me!

There has been mystery around Elizabeth & William Patrick's son Hugh, who until very recently, was unknown to me..... now you've been able to give me  details that suggests he married prior to my gt. gt. grandfather emigrating to NZ and this may have been the reason he stayed behind in Scotland, instead of joining the rest of his family, parents & siblings (who also emigrated to NZ).

I'm so grateful to you for searching this info out for me.  thank you very much.
 :)

I am a descendant of Hugh Patrick.
Hugh Patrick married Mary Richmond on 27 July 1860 in Kilmarnock.
Mary was born in 1840, and her parents were David Wilson Richmond and Grace Baird.
Hugh and Mary's first child was Elizabeth Patrick who was born in Kilmarnock.
Three more daughters were born, Grace Baird Patrick, Mary Patrick (1) and Agnes Gower Patrick before the first son William James Patrick was born in Lambton, Australia on 10 March 1870.
The following children were David Richmond Patrick (1873), Mary Patrick(2)(1875), Hubert Patrick (1877), Arthur Maxton Patrick (1881), Jessie Patrick and May Patrick (1883).
Hugh died 22 November 1918 and Mary 15 July 1916. They lived for many years in Elder Street, Lambton.
Lambton was a major coal mining area of Newcastle in Australia.
I have no record of when they arrived in Australia.

Thanks Joe, the Census information was much appreciated.

Young Mason (female?) was young Marion, named after her grandmother Marion McGregor of Old Cumnock, said by some to be the daughter of Donald McGregor and Sarah Cameron, and great granddaughter of Rob Roy McGregor.

hi paddy, please do not be put of by the ages of your relatives in the censuses as a lot of rounding off was done!!

some roootschatters with more experience say that you can add 5 or take 5 away, to be nearly exact for the date of birth.

wish you well my friend

Ok am going to take a stab in the dark here and wondering if we have a similar ancestor... I can go far back as Arthur Maxton Patrick and that they lived in New Lambton, Newcastle. NSW Australia... that name is the same as my Great Grandfather and even though I can't find anything... his son Horace was my Grandfather... would love to hear from you... take care..

Hi Fliss ☺
You have indeed, stumbled on to the correct family. Your ancestor Hugh Patrick was my great great grandfather's brother.

I will have a lot of info to share with you if you'd like to private message me, I can give you my email address.
I've not used this forum for a couple of years so am a bit rusty on the rules around sharing your email addresses on here.

Hi Aussiefliss,

Arthur Maxton Patrick married Florence (Florrie) Horner in 1902 and lived in Dixon Street, Lambton. I descend from his brother, William Patrick, who lived in New Lambton. They were sons of Hugh Patrick and Mary Richmond who lived for a long time in Elder Street, Lambton. They were also nephews of another Arthur Maxton Patrick (Hugh's brother).

There is information about the New Lambton Patricks in the local papers. For example, the following was written about Arthur's father Hugh: "Mr Hugh Patrick died at his residence, Elder-street, Lambton, yesterday, the cause of death being heart failure. The deceased, who was in his 83rd year, was born in Glasgow. He landed in New Zealand in the year 1866, and subsequently came to Lambton, where he lived for the past 50 years. He was employed as a miner, and worked in Lambton colliery for 33 years. For the last 17 years he carried on a dairy and milk vendor's business. He was for a number of years identified with the Methodist Church. He afterwards became associated with the Salvation Army, and was an earnest worker In the Lambton corps. His wife predeceased him some two and a half years. He leaves three sons and four daughters."
