Title: My Grandma and her family need help
Post by: SooCatt on Friday 17 November 06 10:55 GMT (UK)
Hi,
I spend hours just watching the photo restoration thread and am always amazed at the results that you Rootschat Restorers achieve.  Finally I have learned how to attach a photo and I'm hoping that you'll have a go at my Grandma (she's in the middle at the back).  The photo is in quite poor condition and is fading fast.  Feel free to try anything - I'm so looking forward to the results.

Hi Susan,

If you have been reading these threads you will have seen me bemoaning the fact that the photos are not scanned at a high enough resolution (not again! ;D ;D ::) ::))
Well I am sorry this falls in that category - it is only scanned at 72dpi - if you could rescan it to at least 300 - 600 would be great.
Anyway just a quickie  - much more could be done if..........

Cheers

Keith

Well I have a probem now don't I because it's not a scan.  It's a digital photo of a photo, the original is about A3 size and won't fit in a scanner.

What now?  ???

Sorry to butt in, but I saw this one on a practice post.
Looks better?

Butt in any time you like.  :)
I don't know if it will help though because it is still just a digital photo of the original.

Fingers crossed though.

Hi Susan

It's very low resolution - 72 dpi and jpg compression?. I've just adjusted the levels and mid tones. No repairs yet. It just isn't coming up too well at all.

I'm really sorry about the low res, a digital pic was my best option.  Thanks anyway Keith for your quick try - at least it's better than it was and much better than I could do  :)

Gadget, is it me or did you forget to attach the image?

My only other option I think is to scan it in sections and try to graft them together.  Never done that though so I could be a while    ::)

If you scanned it in two overlapping halves, Susan, with identical settings, we might be able to piece them together. i've managed a few A3 ones like that before. i think it might be worth a try.

I took my repair off because i wasn't happy. i'll put another up later but it would be good if you could put two halves up.

Thanks Gadget.  I did what you said reducing the size but now I've posted them they seem to be only about 31KB.  Are they big enough?

This is a whole new leaarning curve for me  :-\

They're 400 Susan but i see a few pixels showing. I'm wondering if you have compressed them when you saved as jpg. In the save as dialog, it should have an option part if you make this to the lowest compression/highest quality, it should be fine.

Hi all

Susan has sent me two files - left and right. They were  approx 4 MG each but i've resized then to circa 400kb. Resolution is 400dpi. I'll p[opst them each in turn and then try to join them.
Take your pick  ;D

And here's the combined version. I haven't adjusted the tonal balance for difference between left and right sides but I've put a couple of patches in at the top.

Better joined one!

My eyes have given out for the day. I've done the faces but will have to leave the rest for later - like Sunday/Monday.

PollDoll that's lovely - I love the frame on it.

I am green with envy of all of you who can do this.  I have just got a paint package and am learning the basics so maybe one day I can give something back.

Susan

PS Gadget I know I've thanked you loads today in PMs and e mails but just so everyone else knows Gadget is FANTASTIC

Hope nobody minds me butting in and jumping in on the bandwagon,  but I stole Gadget's excellent combined image and had a play with some lighting effects (have to do something while Poll and Gadget sleep  ::) ).

I can attest to the fact that both Gadget and Poll are two of the nicest/funniest  people on rootschat.  Poll even barracks for Manchester United...what a champion...what more can I say?  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

GO THE REDS  ;D

Cazza

PS Poll if I stay up to 3am in the morning I can watch Manu U whupp Chelsea live...course I would have to ring in sick the next day...hmmm...not a bad idea  :P :P LOL

Nice one Cazza. Anytime you want some sticking done, let me know - I'll get my glue ready ;)

Poll has assured me that she has nearly finished the biggie so there's another one coming, Susan. It's just that there's been a lot of sport recently.

Kali

Your working on a very small version of one I am working on. It is best to work on the large version if you are going to download my work.

I am still working on it. I'll know in future and watermark it.

hello gadget, just read your reply, i am extremely sorry if i have offended you  that is the last thing i want to do, i had just come in & seen the pic in question & thought i could possible bring a little more to it, no intention of taking credit from you or others, just hoping to please not offend, exept my appologies, kali,

Apologies accepted Kali.

I was showing Susan what I had done so far. She knew that my eyes had been playing up and I was going to have to take a while to complete it.

I know that we should watermark our final work if we don't want anyone else to play around with it but this was a work in progress and I assumed that there was an understanding that we don't take other people's work.

It was quite clear from the earlier postings that a lot of work had to be done on getting anything out of it. Poll, Cazza and I have been working on it on and off for 10 days.
