I am searching for my Great Great Grandfather Patrick McDermott all I know is that he was born in Ireland possibly born about 1817 all this is very vague but he was in Yorkshire from at least 1849 until 1858 . Patrick was married but I have not got a name for his wife also they had several children including my Great Grand Mother Mary Ann who was born in the Leeds /Halifax area. In 1871 he was in Lancashire.

Do you have Mary Ann (your Grandmother's) birth certificate? This would give the mothers name (& maiden).

Hi Jen, I am still searching for Mary Ann's Birth. on 3 different census she was born Dewsbury/ Leeds/ Halifax so all I can say is Yorkshire!!! I do have Mary Ann's Marriage Certificate (married in Bury Lancashire) 1869. Have tried Freebmd/ Yorks BMD but wrong Mary Ann. So it is a mystery ??? ???

I am currently gathering all the Marriages for my One Name Study so I will divert for a while to have a search for you if you would like.
It may be an idea to give me all the variants that you have come across for the name also.

That is very kind of you to offer to look at the GRO index. The earliest details I have are
Marriage 27th November 1869 at Bury Lancashire of Mary Ann McDermott age 21 (father Patrick McDermott) address Stubbins Lane Ramsbottom - to Thomas Nuttall age 22.
1871 Census Tottington Higher End ( Stubbins)
Thomas Nuttall -23-
Mary Ann Nuttall -22- born Dewsbury Yorks.
1871 Census Tottington Lower End (Stubbins/Ramsbottom)
Patrick McDermott - marr -born Ireland
Margaret McDermott dau 24 born Walton Lancs
Sarah McDermott dau 16 born Halifax Yorks
Jane McDermott dau 13 born Halifax Yorks
Mary J Yates G/dau 6 born Huncote Lancs
I also have 1881 Patrick age 74 in Haslingden Workhouse still marrid but no sign of any wife I am not sure this is the correct man. Also I have Mary Ann on 1881 born Halifax in 1891 born in Leeds.
This is all the information I have on the McDermott's

With regards to the workhouse entry, It could possibly be your ancestor, I have a similar situation husband in workhouse no wife or children listed at all. The only explanation the archivist could give was that the couple were estranged ~ I am not saying this is the case with your ancestors but still worth keeping in mind.
Have you contacted the relevant local archives with regards to if they hold any workhouse registers. Some regions hold good documentation on workhouses, but some unfortunately do not (with Swansea my area one of them!) some simply hold the accounts but it still gives the names of inmates, people receiving indoor or outdoor relief and if outdoor then their address will be listed and their dependants, so not all lost!

Thanks Jen, you could be right about "the marriage" wife has never appeared on any census I have, although I do have a 1881 (I kept just in case) of a Mary McDermott living in Chatterton (a villiage) Stubbins Tottington Higher end

Catherine Kelly dau wid 44 born Ireland
this may not be Patricks wife.
I have found living in the same workhouse as Patrick -
Margaret McDermott u f age 35 born Bacup Lancs is this the same girl as on the 1871?
I have found a Death of a Patrick McDermott Dec 1883 age 76 Haslingden 8e 95 this could be the same man as in the workhouse my GGGrandfather.
