Title: Greer family of Leaffoney, County Sligo
Post by: Annie54 on Monday 27 November 06 17:57 GMT (UK)
Hello, I'm new at this so be kind.
My great great grandfather was Michael/Mitchell Greer of Leaffoney, County Sligo.  His daughter Fanny (1850's) married Mark Martin in Kilglass in 1872 and they lived at the Pullaheney coastguard station.  One of their many children was my grandmother, Matilda (Tillie) Martin who was born in 1885.  I know that Michael was alive in 1876 as he was present at the birth of Mark and Fanny's son George Thomas.
He may have been buried at the Kilglass Church as they were Church of Ireland.

Thanks

Hi Alison,
I don't know who Michael's parents were.  It may have been John Greer, who was listed with Michael and William Greer in the Tithe Applotment records.  I have't found a birth record for him yet.  Michael was a farmer in Leaffoney.
While searching, I did find some death registrations for a Greer family that was stationed in Enniscrone at the coastguard station there.  Elizabeth (53), wife of Robert Greer a coastguard pensioner, died December 16, 1897.  Fanny E. (14), daughter of Robert Greer, died Mar 21, 1897.  Robert Greer (61), a coast guard pensioner, died Sept 26, 1900, and Alfred Greer (14), son of Robert Greer, died Oct 6, 1900.  The last two were witnessed/reported by Robert and Elizabeth's daughter Louisa Greer.  This was all in Enniscrone, Castleconnor district, Dromore West Union, County Sligo.
I don't believe this family is related, but who knows?

Hi  Annie,

I'm not sure if I have already been in touch with you.  I am descended from William Greer of Leaffoney, who is probably the brother of your Michael/Mitchell Greer.  Love to compare our knowledge.

Hi Ray

I've just found some papers of my mother where she has written a small family tree.

According to this tree her GreatgreatGrandmother was Catherine Greer b. 1807 d.1893 who married Thomas Lush.  Her Grandfather was James Lush b. Leaffony 12 July 1849 so I assume there maybe some connection between our families? I have only just (as in today!) begun to look into this so I know nothing else but it would be nice to know if you could connect this Catherine to your Greer family.

Look forward to hearing fromyou.

Hilary

Hi Hillary,
Nice to hear from you. Yes we are of the same family, Catherine Greer was my great grand father William Greer's sister.  Some years ago I was given details by a relative in New Zealand about this connection as the Lush family also came to New Zealand.  I have quite a bit of information about the Lush family that was given to me recently from another source that I can forward to you if you like.

Regards,

Ray Greer

Ray

Thank you for replying so prompty. That was my mother and obviously it is her notes I am going through. I hadn't done anything at all about the Lush/Brett side of the family until my sister sent me a box of my mother's papers... apparently I said not to throw anything away!

I would love to see the new information and then next time I'm in Oamaru where my mother's filing cabinet of Family stuff is I will look out the Lush files and add anything new to it.

Hi Hillary,
I though you might be.  Don't throw anything out! Your Lush was my grandfather Acheson Greer's first cousin and they came out to NZ about the same time around 1880 and farmed next to each other at Longridge North near Balfour in Southland.
I live in Auckland.  I can send you some material if you care to give me an email address.  Mine is (*)

Hi Charlied,

According to my info the marriage of Francis (Fanny) Greer to Mark MARTIN in 1872 produced 13 children - Eliza 1872, John 1874, George Thomas 1876, William 1877, Mark 1878, Fanny Ellen 1880, Ethel Mary 1882, Matilda 1885, Emily 1886, Theresa Jan 1886, Amy Ann 1888, Percival Kate 1890, May Victoria Maud 1892.
A couple of years ago I was in touch with a Mrs Joy Cawley from Canada who is descended from the marriage of Matilda MARTIN  to Thomas CAWLEY in 1912 in Maniatoto Canada.  They must have immigrated to Canada.
I have quite a bit of other information about their origins in Leaffoney.  How can I pass this on to you?

Hi Hilary,

My family name is Lush and I am looking to retrace some family history.  My great grandparents were Mammie and Thomas James Lush from Leaffony Co. Sligo where they owned a flaxmil.  They had 5 sons and I am looking to find out as much info as I can.  Any help would be really good.  Many thanks Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Re Thomas James Lush of Leaffoney.  I have a comprehensive family tree for the Lush family which includes information about your Tomas James and his five sons as noted below.
Regards,

Ray

21.  THOMAS JAMES LUSH (WILLIAM SLUSH, THOMAS, WILLIAM1, [--?--]A)129,130 was born 11 Jan 1879 in Leaffony, Kilglass, Co. Sligo, Ireland, and died 12 Jul 1962.  He married MARTHA GILMORE, daughter of HENRY GILMORE and SARAH SLEATER.  She was born 27 Oct 1881 in Ballysodare, Co. Sligo, Ireland, and died 07 Feb 1965.

Notes for THOMAS JAMES LUSH:
Thomas was given half his father's land upon which he built a house and a flax mill. This was later sold to his cousin James Shannon. The family then moved to Co. Wicklow, Ireland, where his wife taught school.

Welcome to Rootschat, Debbie. Lovely that someone researching the Lush family has replied so quickly  :)

Can add a bit more from online resources in case you don't have the information.

This might be your Henry & Sarah Gilmore- but no daughter Martha listed:

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Sligo/Ballysadare_West/Stonehall_or_Carrownageeragh/908560

Possibly Thomas James Lush in 1901 (transcribed as Slush!)

Can't see the family there in 1911.

Hi Ray,

Thank you so much for your quick reply, I am new here and to be honest I don't find this website user friendly.  So if I end up replying to the wrong person please forgive me.  Thomas and Martha were my great grandparents.  I am trying to find out why their son Oswald left to set up a new life in the UK and kept away from the rest of the family?  I am curious to know what brings you to research the lush family?  There is a lush family website which my cousin has created, where you can see Martha and her sons, but I am not going to post details here as I am not sure yet if that is permitted?  I don't even know how to reply by private message!!! I guess I need to spend some time getting to know this site.  If I can help you in your research I will do my best.  Thank  you very much.  Best regards, Debbie

I have also come across some of the family of the coastguard Greer family of Elizabeth & Robert in the Skreen Parish records (Church of Ireland)

James Nicholsen   Grier Baptised   3/9/1879   Born    27/7/1879      Portavad
Louisia Grier  bap 22/12/1881  born 13/12/1881    Dirkmore

There are many Greers in the Skreen Parish records and a few Martins. I imagine the Fanny Martin of Dunmoran who died in 1919 aged 77 was not your Fanny but another one.

Cheers

Hi Debbie, Ray et al, I might be able to help with info on Lush and Gilmore families.  Thomas James Lush is your great grandfather Debbie and he owned a flax mill. You will find him in Irish Census records 1901 and 1911.  Sometimes they used the name Slush (don’t know why!) so you might need it for searches.  His wife was not Martha but Mary Ann also called Mamie (nee Gilmore).  She is not in the Sligo search in either census because she was teacher training and then teaching in Dublin in 1901 and 1911. They married and had five sons.  Due to cheap imports of Russian flax, the Lush mill had to close.  The family moved to South Wicklow where Mamie secured a teaching post and Thomas James bought a farm. Yes they had five sons, one of them Oswald.  Oswald joined the British Navy and after service he settled in England and from what I heard, became very English, leaving his Irish roots behind! He had a very successful teaching career.  He died in 2007.

I have a different  Greer question.

The 1901 census shows John Greer(70) and wife Eliza (76) at Ardabrone with one son Stewart (26). Stewart's birth record confirms his mother was Eliza Uncles/Unkles.

I cannot read the name of her father in the 1859 marriage record on Irishgenealogy. Does anyone have access to a better copy of that record.

I am trying to sort out the various Unkles families and am currently looking for any records for the family of Young Unkles  b c1809 of Dunmoran who died 1869. I have the Griffiths vals record and the index record of his death but nothing else.

I have some photos of the Harte family of Young Unkles granddaughter Isabella (daughter of Robert Unkles of Masreagh) and want to see if or rather how they are related to the Robert Unkles of Toberawnaun who married my gt grandmother's sister Catherine Clarke in 1878.
