Title: Marriage Query - Which date is correct?
Post by: dustfairy on Thursday 30 November 06 13:08 GMT (UK)
Hi Wonder if any one can tell me which marriage date is most likely to be
correct.

I have a marriage of Robert TATE and Elizabeth HUNTER in Shilbottle date of marriage is 30.11.1783 and the information given is that this record what extracted.

I also have found another marriage date of a Robert TATE and Elizabeth HUNTER in Edlingham on 1.12.1783, this date had been submitted by a member of the church.

The marriage in Shilbottle, would make more sense, as Shilbottle is the area where their children are born.

But was wondering how come there are two dates.  Unless of course there are two couples with the same names, but I do find this unlikely.

Any thoughts would be great.

More likely is that one is the banns being read and the other is the marriage - the earlier one would be the banns which have to be read in both the groom's and bride's parishes for, I think, 3 weeks prior to the marriage unless the marriage is by licence.

The extracted record means it comes from a church register.  Member submitted ones are just that - information given by a member of the LDS church.  They must be treated with extreme caution as they are not a primary source.  You are relying on information given by another researcher which may not be correct.  They often seem to be random guesses!  Always look at the original - in this case the extracted record.  If you can get hold of a copy of the film you can look at the entire parish register entry and see if it gives any further information.   If you are not near the appropriate record office you can order the film from your nearest LDS centre and search it there.  You may find other family entries too.

Hello -the Edlingham parish register entry reads:
7.12.1783: Robert Tate.  parish of Shilbottle and Elizabeth Hunter of this parish.
Witnesses: Thomas Appleby & John Nicholson.

So perhaps the previous `replier` was correct and the Shilbottle entry was a Banns reading for Robert.
Frek.

Hi

thanks for all the replies, Robert and Elizabeths children were all born in Shilbottle, and thanks Frek for that useful information, I don't know any more on Robert or Elizabeth, but now I know she was from Edlingham. Maybe I will get a bit further.

Many many thanks.

Janette,

wee snippets for you..

Like Frek, I saw the marriage recorded on 7. Dec 1793 at Edlingham Prish church. This was a Sunday, more or less normal day for marriage. The Banns were supposed to be "posted" in the "home" churches, on the three Sundays, preceeding the marriage.

Hi Michael

Many thanks for the information, I do already have the births of the 4 that you give me, but didn't know the places, apart from the fact that they were baptised in Shilbottle.  As for the other two I didn't know there were others.  Is it possible for you to find them for me?

As for the burial of Robert, I hope he is mine as I didn't know about this.  Just need to find out about his birth now.  As haven't got anything more on that.

Janette :)

Hi,
I found your post, from a few years ago. I am descended from Robert Tate, born 1791 in Shilbottle, the son of Robert & Elizabeth (nee Hunter). I see this post was from several years ago, I wondered if you had managed to find any more on Robert Tate & Elizabeth Hunter?
Many thanks,
Jenny
